It's a complete joke that Qatar bought this world cup with bribes and didn't have it taken off them.

To not even start on the human rights issues.

I like that Joe Lycett has called out David Beckham for taking £10m to promote Qatar and not really being able to claim to be an ally to the LGBTQ+ community.

No alcohol will be sold at any of the venues.
The elites in the luxury suites can still have alcohol, though.
Alcohol will continue to flow freely inside stadium VIP suites, which FIFA's website advertises as offering a selection of beers, Champagne, sommelier-selected wines, and premium spirits.

BBC news we’re reporting that Budweiser on tweeted “well this is awkward” on hearing the at alcohol will not be sold in the stadium and then deleted the tweet.

Apparently they pay in the mid 10s of millions to be the sponsor and sell their beer in the stadium. The same news story said selling alcohol in the stadium is a condition of getting the competition because ££££.

I wonder how many bribes were paid to make that issue go away two days before the start of the competition?

FIFA’s boss has lashed out at Qatar’s critics on everything. Including migrant labour deaths, LGBTQ rights, alcohol sales, changes to the schedule etc. I wonder if Qatar paid him by the minute or by the word.

I mean it's like the Olympics. It's a business first. People have to remember that.

Define "Business". Because you're right, but I remember going to the Mob Museum in Vegas, 2016, and they had a whole exhibit about FIFA....

Just saying. Some businesses are too corrupt to be so accepted/celebrated. FIFA hasn't made a defendable decision since.... .... ...........

I agree it shouldn't be accepted or celebrated. I'm just pointing out that the leaders of the business will obviously defend their decisions. They only have their profits on mind, not human rights or anything else. As long as we glorify sports, these people will make questionable decisions.

My dude. Your alternate bid was Australia and New Zealand. Who, for starters, weren't going to need to build the stadiums from scratch.

Of course everyone is pissy, and of course they're angry when we know so many died on those stadium projects, that many fans aren't safe travelling there (heck, many players aren't - there's an openly gay player in our A-League, would he have been allowed in if he was picked for the Socceroos?). They're mad FIFA are participating in sportswashing.

Oh I remember! I also remember how much the other bids were snubbed, scoffed at and downright disrespected. I kept on hoping against hope that they would take the WC away from Qatar but they didn’t and so here we are. Plus FIFA has not changed at all.

I love the World Cup. Unfortunately, Italy didn’t qualify, so it tones down the excitement in Greater Boston by a factor of a million. Add in 🇶🇦, the time issues, and all that and it’ll be highlights only for me until the Cameroon/Brazil group round game. We always root for 🇨🇲!

Didn't realize Italy didn't qualify - that's bananas!

My ex husband was a HUGE soccer nut (and his parents were Italian), so there's some schadenfreude I can appreciate here. While I feel for football fans, FIFA and other soccer big wigs have pulled awful stuff long before Qatar. I hate to suggest the unthinkable, but it would be amazing if soccer's popularity were to suffer around the world, so FIFA and their ilk could finally be hit in the pocket book.

As long as soccer fans attend and watch matches, this shit will go on.

FIFA has no shame. The one thing that will help change things is to move the headquarters from Switzerland to New York and remove their not for profit status.

Congrats to England and Netherlands on winning their respective matches. England won 6-2!

Yellow card for the US.

Just in case you are wondering… Football could disappear today and all this money will still be in the hands of the FIFA bosses. So I doubt they would care.

Sorry Wales.. USA 1-0
