Article about Ziegler/Kiefer in Austria's daily newspaper Standard, nationals this weekend: https://derstandard.at/2000070432623/Ueber-Spruenge-im-Eiskunstlauf?ref=rss. It's about current and future plans, how they got there, where they are right now.

some newsbits

- Kiefer has been ill lately (from the sound of it nothing serious)
- they're in Vienna for championships this weekend
- they hope to make final in KOR: "It's in our hands," says Kiefer
- they're on a tight budget, the two can't make financial leaps, even if they get a little more in the Olympic year than usual. Kiefer: "We are glad, we have the army, that keeps us afloat."
- in the summer, they had the goal to train in Oberstdorf together with the vice-world champions Aliona Savchenko and Bruno Massot. They were short of money, therefore they started a crowdfunding campaign to close the gap in funding. About training in Oberstdorf: "Massot helped us a lot technically," so Kiefer, especially with the twist
- the two want to continue until 2022, as long as they stay healthy and fit
- however, first things first: Pyeongchang is coming

I was just reading an interview with Lana Petranovic in Russia Beyond and apparently she and Souz Kordeir are planning to compete at European Championships in January in Moscow.
I thought they split up. Are they together again? She is on icepartnersearch since July.

Cross-posting from the 2018 Austrian Nationals thread in Kiss & Cry this link to a results/recap article in German: http://www.skateaustria.com/index.php/news/oem-2018-die-ergebnisse.html

Google translation:
Lara Roth is the name of the new Austrian national champion in figure skating. The 18-year-old from Salzburg scored a total of 143.10 points, about ten points ahead of silver medal winner Natalie Klotz . A fall in the combination jump in the short program caused deductions for the Innsbruck runner and referred them to third place in this competition part. Natalie, however, won the freestyle competition, but only with a few tenths more points. Lara's lead in the short program did not catch her up. Defending champion Kerstin Frank had to withdraw due to an injury.
Severin Kiefer and Miriam Ziegler will go to Euros/Olympics.

Austria will send a lady for Euros but no man:
Natalie Klotz, who was nominated by Skate Austria for the ladies' singles individual. The 20-year-old student has scored the best points results of all Austrian runners this season. In addition to the result of the state championships, the decision is based on the two international competitions with the highest total points.
In the men's singles, Manuel Koll ... has not yet participated in international competitions this season and therefore has not yet reached the technical minimum points, Austria will not send a runner to the men's singles individual.
Team for 2018 Junior Worlds:
In the junior class Stefanie Pesendorfer was able to climb the top step on the podium. The 14-year-old from Upper Austria received 145.46 points for her performance and will also represent Austria at the Junior World Championships in March 2018 in Sofia. In addition, Luc Maierhofer will travel to Bulgaria , who withdrew his participation in the ÖM during the competition due to injury, but had already reached the technical minimum points in international competitions.

Re-posting @SmallFairy's Kerstin Frank health update in this relevant thread:
Kerstin Frank posted on Instagram that she had a major concussion at Tallin trophy, but didn't take enough time to rest and instead tried to compete at Santa Claus cup in Budapest. Only first half of her FS there is available on YT, but it's not nice to watch. Mid-program she falls really hard on a spin, you can hear her hit the ice, and the I think she interrupts the program. -9 deductions.... Not worth it. I really wish the skaters would...yes, again...listen to their bodies! Take care of them and don't push to hard. And we even had a discussion about concussions here on FSU not so long ago. Get well soon Kerstin!!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGCs8CPjiiE
ETA: Frank had 3 falls (-4) in her FS in Budapest plus a -5 deduction for "interruption of the program."

Alexia Paganini lives with her parents and two brothers in the state of New York, in the USA. Thanks to her father, who comes from Brusio (Graubünden), she has since birth next to the US and the Swiss citizenship. Several years ago, the family had considered whether the young figure skater should start for Switzerland in the future. After several positive discussions with the responsible persons of Swiss Ice Skating and in agreement with the skating association of the USA, this change came about this year, and Alexia Paganini found at Winterthurer SC a new sporting home. After the selection of Alexia Paganini at the Olympic Games in PyeongChang, Switzerland will thus be back in figure skating after no Swiss figure skaters participated in the 2014 games in Sochi (Russia).

Re-posting @Wyliefan's fun video (thanks! at Jorik dressed up as Peter Paul Rubens) here:
Here's Jorik Hendrickx doing an ad for Visit Antwerp. A friend of mine who's teaching in Belgium has become interested in both Hendrickxes, since the local press has been covering their Olympic journey, and she sent it to me. :)

I hope your friend caught Jorik & Loena Hendrickx being interviewed briefly in this Dec. 26 Belgian news program (right around the 28-minute mark) as part of the BEL Winter Olympic team: https://nieuws.vtm.be/vtm-nieuws-dinsdag-26122017-13u

This is cute... Norway's Camilla Gjersem tweeted this video link yesterday (under 2 mins.): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwTUATwY-Tw
It's part of the #OpplevOslo / "Experience Oslo" promo campaign that shows Camilla skating outdoors and inspiring a young Norwegian boy to figure skate and he eventually wins the approval of his father who wanted him to play hockey. ;)

Thanks, Sylvia! This is adorable! :)

I must say Gjersem is consistently one of the best-dressed OES ladies. :cheer: Stunning dress.

attn: @SmallFairy

Good to hear Anna Duskova has resumed training and already training double jumps.
I'd say just enjoy the first Olympic experience.
Duskova/Bidar have WD from Europeans. :( Precautionary measure, still hoping to be ready to compete in PyeongChang? @oubik, if you see this, do you have an update for us?

ETA: When D/B were nominated, a Czech article (linked below) noted that: "Their participation will be based on the real state of preparation, the decision of doctors and coaches (Eva Horklová)."

Re-posting @oubik's positive update on Duskova/Bidar (thanks!) here from the Kiss & Cry section:
Anna and Martin are OK, they have started with SBS triples this weekend throwing the first 2Lo and 2S, 2Lz, doing the Twists even last week and they (better write she) having the last doctor check out on Monday evening and having his approval for full training and competition load now. They are heading to last camp with Richard [Gauthier] and Bruno [Marcotte] in Montreal next week and packing to Korea on February 5th. But the final Czech NOC nomination is next Thursday (Jan 18) so all is still a little bit with IFs :).

Since there's no Italian thread, here's a link to the Icetalk Podcast where Episode 58 is Jackie Wong's delightful interview with Cappellini/Lanotte on the eve of them setting off for Moscow for Euros:
http://web.icenetwork.com/fans/icetalk

I've always liked them before, but after this interview I REALLY like them.
After hearing Luca's explanation of how he was drawn to the father-son relationship in the film now that he's a dad, I'm a little less unsettled about the choice of FD music.

So far at Worlds:
  • Duskova/Bidar-11th
  • Loena Hendrickx-9th, after a 6th place finish in the FS, listed as one of Jackie Wong's highlights in this tweet:cheer2:
Hendrickx earned two spots for Belgium -- Charlotte Vandersaaren missed the SP TES minimum by .53, but needs ~10 points for the FS minimum, but she's got the minimum for Euros, and Belgium has two spots there, too, so maybe?

I hope she and Jorik get some sponsorships from this season, so that she can make the trips to the two GP's she's earned (at least according to the current GP rules) in Milan.

ETA: Jackie Wong also tweeted:

Loena Hendrickx's free skate step sequence is one of my favorite step sequences of the season http://bit.ly/2pATSkB #WorldFigure #Milano2018

"The rise from talent to role model" (7th April, 2018)
– article in Swiss local newspaper "Der Landbote" (Winterthur, part of Tamedia Group) about Alexia Paganini
https://www.landbote.ch/sport/lokalsport/der-aufstieg-vom-talent-zum-vorbild/story/31203810

Google translate excerpts, slightly edited:
This wise decision earned her the most interesting time of her athlete life. "A year ago I would not have thought that possible. It was like a dream - all these competitions. "Alexia Paganini raves about the season that has just ended. For the first time she started at European Championships, World Championships and Olympic Games. "It was exhausting, but I love it."
"I'm happy with the whole season," she beams. Now that she has a break from competition, she has time for a longer visit to the city of her club for which she is licensed. She arrived last Tuesday, and next Tuesday she flies back to New York with her mother.
Every day, Alexia Paganini trains around two hours in the Zielbau Arena. She practices for herself and for the gala "Kids on Ice", which will be held tomorrow in Zurich with about 200 WSC talents in the Zurich Hallenstadion.
Before the Swiss Championships in Neuchâtel in December, she had already spent a short time in Winterthur. Now there is more time left. "To see everything in the city and eat in restaurants" is the tourist program of daughter and mother Paganini, who live in a hotel near the train station. They like it here, says the skater. "People take care of their city, they keep it clean. And it is quieter than at home."
Back in the US, life goes on as before. "School and training." She has already had a holiday: between the World Cup in Milan and the week in Winterthur she traveled to Greece with Paige Conners (a skater from New York, who starts for Israel).
Paganini's center of life remains in New York and New Jersey. "Family and coaches are there." But she will continue in the future for the WSC and return to Winterthur. For both sides last season was a win. Alexia Paganini took part in the main competitions in the world, and the WSC received a top skater. "She has become a role model for our kids. They've started to identify with her," says Patrick Meier, who heads the WSC coaching team with Nicole Brüngger-Skoda.

What is Kids on Ice"? Here you'll find an answer (use google translate): "Like theatre on the ice" https://www.landbote.ch/region/andelfingen/wie-ein-theater-auf-dem-eis/story/27461040

Also not sure if this info is elsewhere, but Dušková/Bidař have split :(

As per their Facebook page: "Thank you very much for your support in recent years. It meant a lot to us! Thanks to you, we reached the gold from the ISU World Junior World Championships, participated at the Olympics and reached other achievements. But now we have decided and each of us will continue its own journey. Thank you for understanding. See you on the ice again!"
