This is still my favorite performance outdoors -- Brian Boitano skating to "Water Fountain" on the Alaskan glacier (from his 1988 TV special Canvas on Ice): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MleTnhI-lOw

Brian Orser's "Story of My Life" at the end of his 1989 TV special Skating Free - performed outdoors on Lake Louise in Banff, Canada: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LWKKKdRi4s

Toller Cranston's "Tales From The Vienna Woods" also from Orser's TV special: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Vea3ne0UN0

Kurt Browning's "Lake of Dreams" from his 1990 TV special Tall in the Saddle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-C7pouwEHSY
Related feature: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QotraHyuk9I

These 2 videos from the 1999 TV special "Winter Solstice on Ice" filmed in Kemi, Finland:

Brian Boitano: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSn-du0uClY

Feel free to share more!

Do videos from the Sun Valley summer shows count as outdoor? It was an Outdoor rink and I saw some great performances on it, from 1988-1990 and again in 2002. I have not looked for those videos but I can do it once I get home.

The Worlds competitions were held outdoors until 1966. I remember Peggy Fleming made the comment during a broadcast that she was at the last Worlds held outdoors in Davos, Switzerland in 1966 (NB: she won the gold). Dick Button retorted that he also won his world medals outdoors, but he said the biggest problem was keeping the dinosaurs off the ice. (Gotta' love that Button humor:D)

I think the most remarkable thing about Toller Cranston's skating was that he had short limbs and a long torso, and yet he managed to have that incredible extension. That was my biggest weakness as a skater, and he blew all of my excuses out of the water.

Dick Button at 1952 Olympics. The first part of the clip is the actual competition. It took place at night and is so dark you can't see anything. The photographers asked Button to perform his program again the next day so they could film it. It is pretty with fir trees in the background.

It makes you wonder how good the judging was at the night events.

Damning with faint praise, eh? ;)

Carol's bent limbs were supposed to represent femininity in that era by specifically looking nonaggressive, but I am used to more modern lines with extension and economy of movement. Pierre Brunet taught her such old fashioned technique!

Great thread! I'm going to savour each response over the next few days. And it is snowing outside in perfect fashion.

However, I go gaga for David Jenkin's skating, which really was uncomparable until Patrick Chan arrived.

I have to give those judges credit in emphasizing the gap David Jenkins had in free skating over the rest of the field, Donald Jackson the exception, giving Jenkins straight 5.9s and everyone else other than Jackson almost nothing over 5.5. Keep in mind, figures were 60% of the total in those years.

From Kurt Browning's 1994 special, You Must Remember This. I'll never forget watching it the first time, and I do have it taped on one of my old VHS tapes. I just don't have it labeled, though.

I was mesmerized with his performance, and still am. I'm including it in this thread.

Singing in the Rain.

I don't believe there's anyone else on this earth that could possibly skate that like Kurt. He was able to perform a lot of the moves just like Gene Kelly.

Norway's Camilla Gjersem tweeted this video link yesterday (under 2 mins.): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwTUATwY-Tw
It's part of the #OpplevOslo / "Experience Oslo" promo campaign that shows Camilla skating outdoors and inspiring a young Norwegian boy to figure skate and he eventually wins the approval of his father who wanted him to play hockey. ;)

I'll cross-post this cute video in the OES News thread.

Not skating performance in conventional terms but imagine you were skating there - the sceneries are breathtaking - and you could see rocks, tree trunks and fish through the ice. Ten cm or 4 in of ice is safe to skate on.

Elizabeth Putnam on top of the world (need a chopper to get there) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhnVWWzgNwg
Skate in Sierra Nevada (need a pair of hiking boots) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoimVpRHnQA
@Tahuu, I recently (re-)posted Putnam's lovely video from 2015 in this GSD thread and I will post your second link there - thanks!
