Mirai was not "screwed out of her spot in 2014." She never had a spot to be screwed out of. From what I have heard, all the athletes were well aware of the "body of work" rule.
That's your opinion, which is not written in stone.

Mirai placed third at 2014 U.S. championships, but she skated well enough to have placed second overall (so even her third place is debatable). In any case, her third place showing is the 'spot' that is being referenced. The 'body of work' rule was set in stone last year by USFS. Prior to that it wasn't completely well-defined, and generally skaters who medaled at Nationals were sent to Worlds and Olympics, with some exceptions most often related to medical byes. Of course that year, Ashley and Gracie were considered shoo-ins to make the team due to their high level accomplishments. Ashley made the GPF that season, and Gracie didn't (although Gracie was highly favored by USFS and she had been advised to work with Frank Carroll -- so it was the beginning of their coaching relationship which started out in promising fashion).
There was every reason for Mirai to anticipate making the Olympic team after how well she skated. She was not perfect, but I felt she deserved to be in second place, and that there was some manipulation of the scoring in both sp and fp. My opinion is that Polina who skated very well, was still a bit over-scored, especially in her senior debut. Everyone has their opinion, and it was a tough situation. But the final decision did 'screw over' Mirai, no matter how some people now like to remember the details.
... she just hadn't done enough to earn the trust of the federation to send her to Sochi... Since 2014 the evidence is clear that she has been working on her skating... I really feel like she's going to get one of those spots this time. She's looking strong early and that's a good sign as it usually takes her a while to get going. I'm hoping her GPs go well and she kills at nationals and gets one of those spots. She's been working hard and she definitely deserves it this time. It's just up to her to make it happen.
You know, there are very different opinions about that volatile and extremely emotional set of circumstances from 2014
@kwanatic. I realize what you are saying, but I disagree with you in some respects. Everyone has their perception and view of what happened and why amongst all those involved (skaters and officials). However, I disagree with trying to paint it as Mirai's fault that she didn't make the Olympic team that year, or that she didn't do enough!

She did enough on the ice. She was at that point and she has been out of political favor with some members of USFS for a number of reasons, with many of those reasons being out of her control. Kudos to Tom Z for agreeing to coach Mirai when some busybodies told him he shouldn't.
Mirai has moved on and she has shown some grit for even being where she is today, and for being as strong and fit as she is mentally and physically. I'm not sure what you mean by suggesting that Mirai previously did not work on her skating? Are you basing your negative comments off of rumors, or do you have some actual proven facts you can lay out? Why do you think she deserves it now, and not in 2014?
I do agree with you that it is Mirai who must make things happen. She did have an opportunity last season that she was unable to grab. There is certainly a lot that's possible to tweak her about, as there is for most skaters. But for Mirai on here, she's one of those skaters who get worked over pretty regularly in a way that's habit-forming.

Personally, I'm just going to watch, root for Mirai and for all the skaters I enjoy, and try to reserve overly harsh judgments of Mirai, especially regarding what hasn't happened yet.
Anyone here who is intent on the infectious habit of over-criticizing Mirai and harshly judging her to some never reachable standard, please go do it somewhere else, and not in her cheer thread! Please and thank you.
