"No one knows Mirai's mirai" Nagasu cheer thread

Mirai has seen one for a while (honestly, I assume that all of the top skaters do?), here is an article from 2014 about an event that she and her sports psychologist did together, though I don't know if Caroline Silby is still the one she uses?

Yeah. I definitely preferred the first version of this program with the flip toe and original choreography. The timing also seemed to change over the last year and the program becomes a lot less effective. She got components from a few judges in the 6s. And I'm kind of annoyed with the lutz call, considering what **certain others have been getting away with on their lutz and flip. Oh well. The ratified triple axel was nice, even though it was with negative GOE. I love how pissed Mirai seemed in the interview! Which makes me think that she was really expecting to land the triple axel, which I guess is a good sign. Only three points down from the lead is ok for the short. Onward and upward to the long!

Mirai's component scores are a little bit concerning. I hope she can work with Jeff again and try to bring back the spark it had last year. She seemed to get raves for her Chopin SP then. I agree on the lutz! I loved Mirai's total honesty in that interview - and her humor!

I do wish that Mirai would get her 3F-3T combo in before going for the 3A. It seems she can no longer do a 3L-3T to save crucial points after missing her 3F-3T combo. A 3L-2T is just not going to do it in this day and age.

Mirai's TES Base was still higher than Marin's and Karen's by about 3 points with only 3A, 3F, 3Lz-2T and it is less prone to under rotation calls if her 3A can be as consistent as we hope.

I was trying to figure out the problem. I think what Mirai needs is "attack" and "flare". Mirai looks like she is going through her program like she is trying to avoid being blown up in a mine field. She should be pushing harder through her program and performing her choreography with more flare.

Clearly, she underrotated the 3A because she lacked attack, despite it being ratified.

I can't imagine her being able to pull off both a 3f-3t combo and a 3A in her SP and I think it would be suicidal to try. Remember how she struggled with the 3-3 last season. As much as I would like her to skate with attack and flair (n.b. ) we need to remember that what she is going for is already historic and she isnt quite there yet, in competition. Her whole focus is a) landing the 3A and b) executing the rest of her program cleanly. Once she's cleared that hurdle (if she clears it) hopefully she can start to breathe, embellish, enjoy herself and go for broke.

Right now she's trying to climb Mount Everest! and trying not to be added to the toll of people who are conquered by it instead of conquering it.

The first competition are always a little rough. It takes some minute to get back into competition mode. So I think this was. Strong start for Mirai.

I noticed that she skipped her intro, which was disappointing. I don't think that original choreography can't work with a 3A and a 3F+3T combo. They both need a lot of cross overs and time to get done, so the beginning looks empty in comparison. I think the only remedy is to do a different musical edit for the intro so it adds anticipation for the 3A while avoiding moments that Mirai skates over the music.

Though, I wonder if she could backload her combo it would help. She's less likely to hit them in such close succession. If they were spread out, the program could breath more and she could keep the original choreography.

Sure but what if the same scenario happens against skaters like Med, the top Japanese girls, etc.? She'd be buried and unlikely to catch up in the FS without major mistakes from the leaders. Even with higher TES she's still only third in the small field at Classics. And just okay PCS scores on top of that doesn't help her with mistakes.

Maybe you are right. I did have some suspicion that Mirai did intend on doing 3F-3T and 3Lz but settled for a 3F and 3Lz-2T because she stumbled out of the 3F.

SOOOOOOOO, MIRAI CONFIRMS she will go for the 3 axel for every performance at every competition!!!!

Oh, I was referring to this specific current SP, not just her general skating in the SP.

I wish Jeff could come to Colorado Springs and work with her for a solid 3 weeks. You can already see the decline in quality of movement since her Skate Detroit efforts.

Or better yet, Tom needs to find a co-coach with a dance background, someone who understands that jumps are the be all end all, but that doesn't mean we ignore the inbetweens.

Yeah, I can't argue with the scores. My hope is that it was because the beginning was rechoreograhed for the 3A, so she did not have it perfectly down.

I liked her little after-sp vid. She knows she can do this program; it's not a risk. She's open about how frustrating it is when it doesn't come together in a competition. I don't know if she can find a way to let herself win, but I still root for her.

I dearly miss the original choregraphy for her SP...The "mood" she created in the beginning with that version is simply lost with this 3A version..I strongly hope her team is aware of this and what we saw yesterday is a temporary solution until she starts to get used to include the 3A in the program.
On the other hand, I was happy with the second part of the program, it works well for me and she seemed much more into the performance.
I still wish, they would choregraph this program for her to start of with the 3F/3T and then the Axel..With the current layout and if the Axel is not successful, it demands quite a lot mentally to shake it off and then nail the Flip/Toe..
I do admire she is going for it all this season and hope that 3A will be an exciting and successful addition to her programs.
I never underestimate Mirai and I have never seen her start off the season as well as she did at Skate Detroit. Lets hope we will see something similar from her in tonights LP!

Well the protocol was yikes...yet Mirai still beat Karen and Mariah (first time she was up against them since 4CC where she also beat them), which should give her some confidence to keep fighting on. Ratified triple axels in the books, next step is getting it with positive goe and other rotated triples

As much as I like the program, it seemed rather empty in places and I found myself thinking that Jeff could do wonders for her PCS by giving her a little mimography for the beginning, middle and end. (Please dont throw cabbages at me.) I would also like to see her stretch her spiral more and do more of a backbend in her Ina Bauer.

I like to think of both programs as a building process. First comes the jumps and spins, as she gets some experience then she can add more transitions and choreography. This is a good start.

I think the SP needs more revamping with the new jump layout, but the FS has all the elements there, probably since the program was initially conceived to accommodate the upgraded content. A lot of the details of the choreography go perfectly with flourishes in the music and will look amazing once Mirai gets more repetitions under her belt and increases her comfort level. Both of these programs look to be excellent vehicles, and I'm really excited to see their potential realized in the heart of the season.

I thought she did really well for so early in the season. She was slow the second half of the FS and you could see the fall coming from a mile away, but I'm sure her stamina will improve. This should give her some confidence going forward. I'm rooting for her.

I too think the landing of that A cold be a big boost to her confidence. She needs to be like Mao motoring through those very difficult technical programs. Do the 3A, taking whatever points it gives (Mao had a lot of bad ones). Then, continuing right along focused down on each element, ticking them of one at a time.

But to keep heartache to a manageable level I have to remember she's not the competitor Ashley is. Love to see her have some great skates this year. It will get her some medals, maybe a place on the Oly team I think that would be a great accomplishment for her.

Everything Mirai did in both the SP and LP needed more flair, including the 3As. I say this because I want to be realistic and constructive.
