"No one knows Mirai's mirai" Nagasu cheer thread

Call me crazy but I get a feeling that Mirai Nagasu will be the 2018 U.S. national champion.

Her Four Continents results earlier this year proves the international judging love.
And yet the USFSA will find some loophole to keep her off the Olympic Team, I bet.

She was only three points away from making the world team last year, and the US judges could have dumped on her more after that free skate. I think that coming in 2nd after the SP (ahead of Gracie and Ashley, and just below Karen) last year shows that she has improved her standing with the judges, it's up to her now to get the job done. Last year, she had the highest international sp and highest international lp scores (**Ashley's WTT LP score that was like a point higher notwithstanding, but I put WTT in a different category given the overall scoring frenzies that go on there and that it's a end of the season cheesefest) of the US ladies. She has done 7 rotated triple free skates for the last two years in February (word to the wise though Mirai, stop saying that 4CC is a no pressure event...for your sake, make it sound like it is the highest pressure event ever for your pr purposes :p). And that's excluding the triple axel, which I'm still not sure that she'll land in competition, but...jeeze, she's done it in her Champs Camp lp run through and under show lights. She's definitely getting closer and is in a much better position this cycle than she was four years ago. Here's to hoping we can avoid a Skate Canada like event this season :40beers:

My hope is that Mirai skates exactly the way she wants to skate repeatedly as many times as she wants as a reward for her hard work ...

"....and suddenly, [she finds herself] in this...hole...this huge, big VOID !! [She can] do anything [she] wants to, [her] only limits [is her] own imagination !! It's like floating free, it's like being in outer space !!"

... :shuffle: as Christopher Dean would put it.

Just to be clear, see Void :D

Void
Has several meanings - And one day there shall be more I am sure.
Official Skating wise Explanation from Skate Guv:
"Oh gawd that's a tough one to define, better ask christopher dean !!"

It stems from me and sharps watching old documentary about T&D where we pee'd ourselves laughing at the following quote from Chris, which he said, erm, very dramatically ...

"....and suddenly, we found ourselves in this...hole...this huge, big VOID !! We could do anything we wanted to, our only limits were our own imagination !! It's like floating free, it's like being in outer space !!"

So we use the term "Voidy" to describe anything in skating which is a drama fest ala Dean. You know the sort of thing, angst expressions, hands outstretch, weird programs with weird music, skaters who clearly think they are skating as ar-TEESTES and creating an arty masterpiece...it's all "voidy"

PS: If non skating wise you are in a void. Then you have either been overcome by the porniness of someone or drunk LOL. Also having a hangover can put you in a void too. Basically a trance, yes?

So the fact that she didn't get a second senior B ended up being for a very great reason. Go Mirai!

I'm trying to temper my expectations but I can't help but have a really good feeling about Mirai this season.

I'm just going to be cautiously optimistic. This is the best she's looked in the pre-season in years...possibly ever. She looks strong, focused, confident, etc. and that's always a plus. BUT she's gotta deliver. If she can I could totally see her knocking it out of the park at nationals and going to the Olympics as the national champ.

As always I'll cross my fingers for her.

I have a good feeling too. But remember to be patient. Triple axels are fickle jumps. We have to be supportive so she can get the Olympics.

The great thing is even without the 3A she's got strong content (3F-3T, 2A-3T) and that's what I'm most excited about. If she can nail those jumps AND add a 3A to the mix that puts her on a different level competitively.

I know. Even if she doesn't have all good skates this Fall, I simply think she's in a much better place this season than she has been in a very long time. She's prepared and ready and confident. No matter what happens, I feel like she feels very secure about where she's at and that's all you can ask for to prepare for this crazy upcoming season. There's nothing about her prep that's lacking so far and that in itself is a very satisfying feeling.

Mirai is still working hard. Some days it isn't easy.

I love her humility. All we've been seeing are the successful attempts but I'm sure she has several of those kind of falls a day. The amount of skill it takes to go after that element is insane but it takes twice as much courage to throw yourself into that jump time after time. #respect

And can we all appreciate the fact that (as of now) Mirai is the only senior going for this jump and the only one currently landing it at this time? #massiverespect

I thought Tuktamysheva was doing it again. ?

Also, Starr Andrews has gone senior nationally and is going for it too.

There was a report from one spectator that Liza had done the 3A at a recent event, but it was a mistake, the protocols came out and showed that she had done a 2A (I think I read that the latest was that she was training the 3A in harness and trying to get it back). Good point about Starr, though she is still a jr internationally so I forget about her. I wonder if Wakaba will go for it this season. I know that she landed it in the WTT practice, but I think she said that it was the first time she had landed it so cleanly, so I wasn't sure how it was going now. It was so exciting when Liza landed it at Worlds in 2015. I remember that Ashley and Gracie talked about training one after that, and people thought it would be all about Liza vs Mao the next season just because of the triple axel :( I know that Mariah talked about potentially training it this summer (after nationals), and Karen talked about adding it in an interview over the summer, but I am expecting that Mirai (and Starr) will be the only US ladies attempting it this season at this point.

I'm happy that Mirai got the Japan Open spot! Nice prize money regardless of how the NA team places.

Tuk's is mia status since she already did it in the past, although we should assume she will be training it for this season since Russia's ladies field is so deep.

Starr Andrews is not really well known. I just saw footage of her skate for the first time yesterday.

Not to take away from Mirai at all but Starr will likely be well known soon - especially if she starts landing that thing in competition, which she already tried in her first JGP. She is very talented. Also, her "Whip Yo Hair" video on YT a few years ago got a zillion views.

I love Starr. But why are you bringing her on Mirai's fan thread?

This tells me Mirai is feeling really confident. You don't post a video of a fall if you aren't regularly landing the jump. I saw a number of falls like that when my dd was working on a 2A. I suspect we won't see Mirai in a short skirt with bare legs anytime soon. The bruises must be quite spectacular!

She just needs to keep her confidence up. Tom seems like a good coach in that respect.
