So, before I give this horrible, unpopular opinion, let me put it out there that I am no purist, especially when it comes to Austen. Austen herself wasn't as much of a purist as her fans are

I think that Austen wouldn't mind an update. I'm not sure she would 100% approve of the latest adaptation, but I think she would not mind it as much as her critics do as she was very much a modern girl, a maverick, and a bit of a rule breaker in her time.
I really, really, really like the latest Persuasion. And that's really saying something considering my deep, abiding loathing for Dakota Johnson, but I found her luminous and really, really, really relatable. I don't mind the breaking of the fourth wall; I think it works, especially as Anne is one of the more introspective Austen heroines. That in and of itself is worth four stars alone. I think the biggest problem with the casting is Captain Wentworth--Anne, Louisa, and Mary (OMG, MARY

is fabulous and so over-the-top horrible that you have to root for her), are spot on but Captain Wentworth is just...boring. I can't imagine pining for eight years over...that. And he needs to brush his hair and shave. They had him act like a lesser Darcy and Darcy belongs solely at Pemberly.
If you watch it, watch it as if it's a standalone move and not based on the novel--think of it as "inspired by" rather than "based on." I FELT the line "now we're worse than exes...we're friends" and the playlist/mixed tape. I understand the criticism of the anachronisms, but I like them. I fully admit to laughing at a five in London is a ten in Bath, especially as a friend once told me that I should move to New Hampshire, as I would be a solid nine as opposed to a "Southern six on a good day." As a movie, it's fun and enjoyable and nice romp on a rainy afternoon with a cuddly dog and popcorn.
