Netflix/Prime/Hulu/BritBox Binge Watching: Coronavirus Edition

As some of us are likely to have to go into isolation at home at some point in the next few weeks/months, some serious binge watching will be required to take ones mind off the boredom and tedium. Hence, time for a new thread - the coronavirus edition

I would probably start off with my Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes DVD boxset. However, as only 14 films were ever made, I would quickly get through that. However, I noticed on BritBox that they have the entire series of Doctor Who right from the very start of its almost 60 year history. I will probably move on to that next. And then I would probably move onto Stranger Things and The Crown on Netflix

For fun, we started watching the original Route 66 Series on Netflix and Episode 3 (1960) was about a bird flu epidemic.

Hubby just started watching Vienna Blood on PBS and likes it a lot.

Maybe a big chance to clear a whole bunch of stuff off the pvr. I had been wondering what I was going to have to eliminate to make room for World FS & World Curling next week - now instead I will have time to actually binge watch some of them before deleting. In early January the cable company had few previews of a few premium channels and I managed to get a few seasons of Prime Suspect. I also have 31 episodes of Madam Secretary, 43 of Suits, 23 of The Americans, Season 2 of Star Trekiscovery, as well as a number of highly rated movies like Dunkirk.

Since I've had it I've binged watched all the episodes of Murder in ... This is a compilation of French mysteries, each one set in a different area of France. Some of the mysteries are great, some so-so, but the scenery is gorgeous. It's like being on vacation in France without having to go there. I have also binge watched all the episodes of the Italian series Montalbano, based on the books by Andrea Camilleri; this series has been running in Italy for 20 years. I think so far I have seen about 35 episodes and I'm anxiously waiting for the 2 latest ones which will be released later this year. MHz Choice has quickly become my favorite streaming service.

Oh, I will have to look into this! We already subscribe to approximately 500 other streaming services (possibly a slight exaggeration ), but I really love mysteries.

Or maybe it's something that I could get my mom for Mothers' Day. She loves mysteries too; we always watch Masterpiece Mystery on PBS.

MHz Choice has increased their content a lot since last I checked. If you understand European or Scandinavian languages, it’s a treasure trove. All shows have English subtitles. Thanks for bringing it to my attention again @emason.

Their free trial is short though - just 7 days.

I would add the Netflix shows Dark, if you haven't seen it yet (this one comes HIGHLY recommended); The Rain, if you want to freak yourself out (it's about mass transmission of a fatal disease through the rain); Safe and The Stranger, which are sort of dumb but fun thriller-ish British series based on Harlan Coben material; and Counterpart, a truly wonderful and innovative show that is sort of a sci-fi twist on the divided Berlin, which you may still be able to find through Amazon prime. It's really incredible, great acting and an interesting concept. Please watch it!

I had issues with Netflix and Spotify getting hijacked once. Spotify wasn't at all useful beyond telling you to change your password. Netflix was on it and started banning the bad IP addresses. I loved their response a lot better.

Disney+ has been well worth the money for us. We've re-watched many of our favorites, enjoyed The Mandalorian and The Imagineering Story and are now going through and watching things we missed in the theaters for whatever reason.

We ended up canceling Hulu because we pretty much never watched it even if that meant occasionally missing something good but we don't feel that way about Disney+

I just discovered that FIOS unlocked a lot of their premium cable channels that are normally part of expensive packages. If you are a cable subscriber, it might be worth 10 minutes of your time to scan and see what else you get.

The free HBO/Cinemax through Monday night gives me a chance to DVR a few more movies although I just realized that I haven’t watched two of the ones I saved the last time.

Then there’s my Netflix queue that I have to get to by Friday before our plan downgrades itself to the one screen version.

We're watching A Star is Born. Not seeing what all the fuss is about. Though Bradley Cooper's singing is better than I expected and Lady Gaga's acting is better as well. But the whole thing feels very retread to me and never really cared about the character of Jack at all.

I loved this show , and was very sad, when it was cancelled after 5 seasons (Ben McKenzie and Michael Cudltz were quite a pair!).

I've started to rewatch third season of The Americans. Two weeks ago I was in the library: I've got all 7 seasons of Homeland, and all of The Americans. So I'm set for the next weeks. The libraries are closed since Friday until 19th April.

Speaking of Homeland: We stopped watching it after Season 2. Some of what happened in Season 2, especially the ending of that season, just didn't ring true or seemed too sensationalistic.

Did it get better after that? Should I give it another try?
