I stumbled onto “The Bear” on Hulu. What a treat. A young, fine dining chef returns home to Chicago to run a family sandwich shop after a family tragedy.
This show is 30 minutes each episode and details life in a kitchen that must change to stay afloat. I love the Chicago setting, a solid cast and great music woven throughout the show. This feels authentic.

The Terminal List - Checked this out because of Chris Pratt. This Amazon offering is a revenge series. Pratt plays a former navy seal out to kill anyone he even thinks is connected to the deaths of his family and colleagues. The “good guy” in this is just cringe worthy. He uses a variety of methods to kill his opponents and don’t seem to care much if innocent people get hurt. Neither is he above pulling a gun on those trying to help him. I kept watching hoping it gets better but it really doesn’t. Just not for me and even Chris Pratt could save this for me.

I tried and fell asleep. I heard the author had a big ax to grind against Hillary after Benghazi. I’ve noticed a certain arrogance in some (not all) in the SOF community: “ We know how the world works—you don’t.” I was curious to see if that attitude surfaced in this series. But it isn’t well done and I don’t want to waste my time.

Ballet fans should check out the Disney+ 6-part documentary series On Pointe, which follows the lives of multiple School of American Ballet students of various ages and skill levels. The younger students try to get a role in the New York City Ballet’s annual production of The Nutcracker while the older students deal with preparing themselves for college and showcases where they try to get into a company - everyone’s first choice seems to be the New York City Ballet, which makes sense as SAB teaches Balanchine technique and is a feeder to the New York City Ballet. It’s well shot and the students are really great and motivating to watch.

It doesn't look promising that Everything Everywhere All at Once will be on a streaming service like Netflix.

Everything Everywhere All at Once is available to stream at home now. You can buy it from digital retailers like Amazon, Apple TV, Google Play and Vudu for $20. As for renting? The flick will be available to rent from July 5. Blu-ray, 4K Blu-ray, and DVD sales start July 5. The Blu-ray is available to preorder now for $15.

We recently watched the second season of Raised by Wolves on HBOMax. It is legit one of the strangest sci-fi shows I can remember seeing--very odd yet very intriguing. We both liked it a lot. It's unfortunately been canceled on HBOMax due to corporate changes. I really hope some other streamer or channel picks it up, as the second season ended on a bit of a cliffhanger. Supposedly the showrunner had almost the entire third season already written ... I really want to see it!!

Just started watching 'Stranger Things', having not been interested before. The recent buzz about the show and lack of shows we like to watch prompted us to give it a try. So far, only mildly interested, but enough to keep going.

Does it get better?

I don't know how to answer that. Are you watching Season 1? I was gripped from the beginning of that season. I found season 2 uneven and can't even remember what happened.

I didn't like the first season upon first viewing, I thought Joyce was saying thing over and over and over again. I watched the second season because nothing else was on and really enjoyed it. It made me rewatch the first season and I ended up liking it a lot more. An unpopular opinion apparently, but I think the third season is the best.

I can remember the general story but not necessarily specific plot points. I blame that on them having huge gaps between seasons and me not rewatching them.

I admit though that the 80s nostalgia is a big part of the show for me and I may have cried a single tear when
the mall blew up.

I finally watched the final season of 'Killing Eve'. Not perfect, and not as good as the earlier seasons, but ok.
Also I just love a show - that has 2 female leads, they kick ass, and especially the 3rd most important character this season was also a female (Carolyn). Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer are great. I also felt like the cast was enjoying what they were doing. Konstatin has the best laugh

Fiona Shaw who plays Carolyn was just awesome this season and they gave the viewers an easter egg for Harry Potter fans.
Paraphrasing - in talking to a man, saying how women's vaginas have invisibility cloaks... LOL

Started watching The First Lady on Paramount+. I'd probably like it better if I hadn't just read Michelle Obama's autobiography as the screenwriters have clearly made some things much more dramatic/contentious than they actually were, which in turn is making me question how much dramatic licence has gone into the stories of Betty Ford and Eleanor Roosevelt.

You know the “war porn” (the grisly ways he exacts his revenge) raises my hackles about the author. By all accounts he is a nice man but the way the “hero” goes about his business is the stuff we assign to serial killers. I am not surprised by the bad reviews.

On a different note about ex-military/CIA there is “The Old Man” on FX. It stars Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow and is a more realistic and thoughtful story. It is also violent but it is not gratuitous. I adore Bridges and am glad he is still able to work after cancer and the Rona.

I think for me it was good because it is such a nostalgia trip. It has tapped into something…it is a hit in 91 countries and at or near the top in 85 of them and is chasing The Squid Game for ratings history. It has to be these mostly ordinary kids in an extraordinary situation.

The Boys Season 3 finale was fantastic. The 3rd season was a 10/10 for me. Every episode was incredible writting. Dark and wild, but the character development was outstanding.

Thanks for that. Looking for something to watch. I have just started doing adult ballet classes so am very interested in this.

I have not watched the show yet but I did see the Rolling Stone interview when the show runner said Homelander was an analogue for Donald Trump. At my favorite basketball site there was talk of a meltdown by some right wing fan boys on subreddit because somehow they thought their beloved Homelander might eventually emerge heroic. I like when a show takes direct aim at facism.

I watched Chloe on Amazon Prime this weekend. I thought it was good. Erin Doherty did well in it.

The show in my opinion is very nuanced and clever. Unlike a lot of online political discourse which is as subtle and nuanced as a giant sledgehammer.

I’m actually cringing a lot about that Homelander=Trump analogy. If the show runner said that, he’s underselling his own show. The Boys is so much smarter and interesting than that. It’s fantastic I promise.

The character of Homelander is actually a very interesting and complex one. You learn a lot about how he came to be who he is and who knows where the character development will take him next. A redemption character arc is always a possibility.

I’m enjoying Strange New Worlds. It seems to capture the fun of TOS and TNG but with the added burden that Pike knows he’s doomed
I agree! I enjoy it much more than Discovery which I mostly watch because Michael is a good actress but I also spend a lot of time bitching about everything.

As someone who watched The TOS when it was first-run, seeing this kind of throwback only with much better production values is really fun.

Strange New Worlds is fantastic because it has reconnected with the heart of what Star Trek is meant to be.

First and foremost, Star Trek is a series about wonderous exploration. It’s a research ship - not a battle ship.

Some other series/movies have been too war focused.

Completely agree. I'm watching ep.9 right now and am sad the next one is the last in the current season because I'm enjoying it so much.

This is totally me. I think I've only watched the last season and a half for the sake of being completist, and even Michael is starting to annoy me.

That is how I feel as well. I didn't watch TOS on original run (slightly too young) but watched it with my mother from a young age (it was she who introduced me to sci-fi).

Even husband, who doesn't like science fiction (except Firefly), commented on the superior graphics in Strange New Worlds.

Absolutely.

Some of my younger acquaintances are enjoying it as well, even ones who've never really watched Star Trek previously (one was disappointed when they found out that Spock and T'Pring don't end up together  - I had to send them YouTube clips of original Trek to explain it).
