Muhammad Ali R.I.P.

Mr. Ali visited the Holocaust Museum the year it opened, in 1993. He spent two hours going thru the exhibition very attentively. Whatever rash things he said in his youth, it did not represent his behavior as a mature man.

John McCain, imprisoned for 5 years as a POW, said wonderful things about Ali, who served time in prison rather than go to Vietnam. Which speaks well of both of them.

It seems like a star comes out of every Olympics & for the 1960 Olys it was Ali. I had never watched the boxing before but for the 1st time it because a must-watch sport. And he wasn't just another athlete. I've always thought Ali was the most beautiful man I'd every seen. When he was young his body was absolute perfection. It was painful to see him when Parkinson's started taking a toll. I've always been glad he was given the honor to light the torch in Atlanta 1996. RIP
Yes he was. I remember when they announced that he had Parkinson's Disease at the Olympics. I hated to see him that way, but it was such an honor for him to light the torch.

I am glad he is dead.

I'm sort of in shock here. You know, I nearly died, and I thank God for each and every day I'm still here. There are things in our past that some of us all may regret, but as adults, we always try to get things right. To say something like "I am glad he is dead", is a very harsh cruel thing to say. No one is perfect on this earth, and you're not perfect either. You cannot believe everything you read especially on the internet.

Okay, that's enough said from me. Finished completely.

Louisville Courier-Journal article: http://www.courier-journal.com/stor...d-ali-memorial-plans-set-yum-center/85401556/
Excerpts:
... [Ali's] family announced his funeral would be held Friday in his hometown of Louisville and include a motorcade through the city, private burial at Cave Hill cemetery and a public memorial at the KFC Yum! Center with eulogies by former President Bill Clinton, Billy Crystal and Bryant Gumbel.
At a news conference in Arizona, family spokesman Bob Gunnell said the funeral plans were made years ago based on Ali's wishes, and would include an interfaith public service and funeral in the Muslim tradition. He wanted the memorial to be "open to everyone," he said.
After it became clear “his condition wasn't going to improve,” he said, they were able to bring all family members to the Scottsdale-area hospital during his final 24 hours to say goodbye.
He officially died of septic shock from unspecified natural causes on Friday at 9:10 p.m. mountain time (11:10 p.m. EDT), according to Gunnell, who added that Ali did not suffer.
Ali will be returned to Louisville in the next couple of days. On Thursday, the immediate family, including children and grandchildren, will hold a private ceremony in Louisville.
On Friday morning, the family will gather at a funeral home where they will be joined by an Islamic Imam for prayer before embarking on a “rather large funeral procession that will take Muhammad through the streets of Louisville to allow anyone that’s there from the world to say goodbye," Gunnell said.

So many great iconic cultural figures passing on this year ...

RIP Muhammad Ali (born Cassius Clay). Ali stung like a bee, floated like a butterfly, and soared like an eagle! Ali was the greatest poet/rapper ever, before rap evolved!

Many of the academics who have spoken since Ali's death have said that he was an inventor of what we now call "Hip-Hop".

Reading that piece, is it possible that Ali could have had dyslexia?
It seems likely to me.

At the time, little was known about the condition.
People who had reading/learning difficulties often were told that they were "stupid", at best.
For a young Black person in the South, it must have been even worse.

Beginning at 9 a.m. ET on Friday, Ali’s body will lay in procession through his childhood neighborhood in Louisville, Kentucky. The first African-American broadcast network, Bounce TV, will carry footage of the procession, along with cable networks like CNN, HLN, TV One, and ESPN.
At 2 p.m. ET, a large-scale memorial service will take place at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville. President Bill Clinton, Real Sports host Bryant Gumbel, and comedian Billy Crystal will deliver eulogies to The Greatest. The service will be carried live by the aforementioned cable and broadcast networks.

Got my issues of Time and Sports Illustrated, with Ali on the cover. Can't wait to read the articles.
