My husband won a lot of money at a viewing party tonight because he was the only one who picked Parasite for every category where it was nominated. I thought it might win 1 or 2 awards, but not that many. Congrats to all involved with the movie. That was a surprise to me!

It was nothing more than a cynical thought I had that when a foreign film is up for Best Picture, they just give it foreign film award and not Best Picture in the past, but there is no way that was going to happen this year when there was so little diversity among the other big awards. If Parasite got International Film, it was a done deal for Picture and Director so the Oscars would be all woke 'n stuff.
I shoulda put money down on that.

You have to admit though your thought process wasn’t the most predicted outcome as 1917 won every other reliable precursor and wasn’t competition for Best Foreign Language Film, so for that I count it as a surprise win for Director and Picture.

I did think that Parasite winning International Feature meant it would never get BP, but when I was preparing my predictions, research showed it was gaining on 1917 so I went ahead and voted for it (also just thought it should win). Only one other person in my office pool thought it would win BP (but everyone had it down for International).

I missed the end of the telecast and just went back to see acceptance speeches. Renee Zellweger started ok and then trailed off into I don't know what. I had to turn it off.

Back to Zellweger, at the time I remember reading her character in Cold Mountain was supposed to be mixed race. But I never read the book so I’d don’t know. I guess I could google it but it seems someone who actually read the book said the character’s race was never mentioned.

I don't know about Zellweger's role, but there were complaints that a film set in the civil war having virtually no mention or visuals of slavery.

Also the lead roles were played by Jude Law (British) and Nicole Kidman (Australian).

Interesting. I seem to recall getting the impression from reading the book that the character was mixed race, and thus being surprised when Zellweger was cast. I'd have to check the book again to see if all characters' backgrounds were specifically clarified.

So now foreign films may have an advantage of winning two Oscars for essentially similar categories. It probably will be rare to happen, but once again not impossible with the high quality filmmaking that exists around the world. Of course, the reason 'Best foreign language film' category exists is to honor films made in other countries that were formerly seen as not part of Hollywood. Now that the film industry has changed and is much more global and becoming a bit more inclusive, the overlap is inevitable.

Yep, Renee seemed to lose her train of thought, and she was reaching for her words toward the end of her overlong speech.

Although Joaquin's speech was long too, it was well put together, thoughtful, emotional and captivating because it seemed so heartfelt.

Me either. All her songs sound the same and many have lyrics that are creepy being sung by a teenager.

What happened when the audience started yelling something? I was looking away from the TV and heard like silence and then cheering?

They turned the lights and mic off on the Parasite group while they were still giving their acceptance speeches. The audience chanted "up! up!" until the crew turned the stage lights back up so they could finish.

I'm so thrilled for Parasite, I wanted them to win everything and they did, I just can't believe it. It's been a long time I haven't felt such a deserved win. Brilliant on all accounts, I wished there was an assemble cast award because they would definitely deserved that too. And Taika Waititi won for best adapted screenplay too for the other brilliant movie of the year. Great results.

Watching Bong Joon Ho's acceptance speech for Best Director, I love how much homage he plays to film in it. My favorite part was seeing Greta Gerwig going crazy cheering for him as he was making his way up to the stage to accept. I hope she makes another kick ass movie that will be appreciated by these bodies. I still think what she did for Little Women truly convinced me that she was a true artist of the medium even though I was already convinced by Lady Bird and her performance and writing in Frances Ha (my favorite movie of the decade).

Billie Eilish probably got the gig for singing the In Memorium because she won the Grammys but is also doing the next James Bond theme.

I quite enjoyed it. Funniest moment was Maya Rudolph and Kristin Wigg. They cracked me up.

I don't watch the Oscars, and didn't read this thread to see if anybody cared, and the last movie I saw in a theater was Ghost, but this has been on our local news a lot.

I’m not as quick with my awards trivia as I used to be, but isn’t this the first time in while that a movie won Picture, Director, and Screenplay? If there was a Best Cast award, Parasite would probably have won that too. I remember some people thinking Parasite’s chances were dead after none of their actors were able to get nominated showing lack of actor support despite its SAG nomination, but then it won SAG and then people were like maybe it does have actor’s support.

In other words, not only did Parasite win, but it won the most important awards regarding its film craft and therefore won big.

That's why I tend to not watch trailers or just 30 seconds of it either they are blah as you said or reveal way too much. Parasite might be a lot of things but, for sure, blah isn't one of them. Give it a try.

Seriously, how can a movie with Parasite’s subject matter and inspire such a strong negative reaction from one of the posters here be blah considering what else is usually shown in American theaters these days.

So like five years ago. That is kind of a long time considering it used to be much more common. The past few years have seen a lot of splits between the three categories most notably the Best Pic and Best Director split when they historically went together making people wonder how much the different voting format between Director (and every other category) with the straight up vote and Picture with its ranking system skews the results. It just feels nicer when a Best Pic winner also has a Best Director and a Best Screenplay win as well because it makes it seem the Academy truly like it especially with the fact that it came on top with two different voting systems that has affected the results in other years. That seems better than being a movie that seemed to just pull off a win on the edge of their teeth.

Now that you mention Birdman, I guess I don’t remember that right away because I’m still angry about that result.

Sometimes the best movies have really weak trailers because the movie can't easily be defined in 60 or 120 seconds. ?‍

"Parasite" definitely isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it is absolutely well acted, unpredictable, visually interesting and crafted beautifully. The audience I saw it with either loved or loathed it, with more in the former than latter camp.

You know, it's been kind of bothering me that someone said they predicted Parasite to win after it won Best International Film (even though it was the odds-on favorite to win that category anyway) because the Academy voted for it to look "woke" amid the controversies it had regarding lack of diversity. This feeling got exacerbated after reading some jingoistic and chauvinist write ups today. Then I saw this video a man going crazy about the win even though he never saw Parasite and doesn't realize it's about the very themes he says Joker talks about as well:

I think that entire attitude really undermines Parasite as a film and its win. It also overstates the 7,000+ membership's ability to get together and orchestrate a conspiracy to vote for it in order to "virtue signal" or whatever the criticism of picking a foreign film or any film that isn't mostly white tends to get when it wins. I've been hearing about that ever since I started paying attention to awards shows and saw people's reaction when a black person wins, etc. It's always "it's because they're ____."

It's like when an animated film gets nominated for best picture. You don't genuinely expect them to win.

"Parasite" winning original screenplay was also a bit of an upset, as "Marriage Story" was the odd makers leader going in.

Really? I thought if anything it'd be Once Upon a Time that would beat out Parasite. Say what you will about Tarantino, man can write a hell of a script. I'm still salty that Inglourious Basterds didn't win.

To me the biggest surprise of the entire night was that Leo brought his girlfriend as his date.

Parasite's win were definitely a surprise once they had won best international film. Like the director, I thought they were done. I don't believe one bit it won because the academy is wok. If it was the case there would have been more women nominated in the major categories. It is just that good a movie whose story transcends cultures. My daughter came home saying some of her Turkish girlfriends were thrilled because they loved the movie and we're talking 15 years old girls ... So transcends generation too. I wish he would have won back in the day for Memories of murder too tbh.

I haven't seen 'Parasite' yet but am really looking forward to it. Was so surprised and relieved that all the attention at the Oscars wasn't on Tarantino and Scorcese (sp?). Am feeling rather averse to the old white Hollywood boys club at the moment.

I’ve seen a number of them (without too many spoilers):

• 1917: Poignant story. Visually stunning. It seemed like the entire movie was done in two shots. Cinematography was the most deserved win of the Oscars, IMHO.
• Once Upon A Time in Hollywood: I typically don’t like Tarantino films, but this one was one of my favorites. I was okay with the violence in the end (I’m usually at the violence in Tarantino films). FYI: It’s an alternative history movie and some people don’t like that. And.....it’s the Manson family.......
• Ford v. Ferrari: Very good movie, especially if you like auto racing. Based on a true story - which historical & true stories are my favorite types of movies. There is tragedy at the end.
• The Irishman: Scorsese’s movies are often WAY too long, IMHO. This one dragged by about 2 hours. Wasn’t personally a fan of the CGI de-aging.
• Joker: Good movie, but you won’t like this if you aren’t into psychological thrillers.
