Movie/TV awards 2019-2020 thread

These days, I prefer not to watch violet films about men with guns and gangsters. I doubt I'll watch a Scorsese film again (granted 'Age of Innocence' was wonderful and had an unusual focus for Scorsese). The last Scorsese I saw was 'Streets of New York' - may have the title wrong, as it was some time ago. It was just way too violent for me.
Do you mean Gangs of New York (DiCaprio, Day Lewis, Diaz)
I loved The Departed. But I agree on your take on him.

While I know they're not everyone's cup of tea, I can't respect that he doesn't view Marvel movies as cinema. It may not be his style of cinema, but they tell stories, have character growth, and suck people into the stories. Sure they may be a bit like a carnival (or whatever he had compared it to), but there's nothing wrong with that at all.

I agree with him on that like how I think not every novel or book series is literature, but then I also recognize the elitism inherent in my agreement with that statement.

Critics Choice Awards airing right now on The CW.
So far Parasite has won best foreign language film, Joaquin Phoenix best actor for The Joker, and Laura Dern supporting actress for Marriage Story.

Really weird how they did Supporting Actress and Actor in a comedy series - they announced the nominees and winners for both at the same time, so Alex Borstein (Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and Andrew Scott (Fleabag) were announced and called to the stage at the same time to accept their awards.

Anyone else watching Critics Choice Awards? Is there an awful lot of bleeping going on or is my cable cutting out or what? The sound keeps going out (bleeping or feed screw up?), and they cut to commercial right in the middle of one guys speech. Then black screen for several minutes and seems like I've missed stuff? Just me or everyone? Very  about this coverage.

I had coverage, then it would cut to what seems like a 70s or 80s sitcom for about 10 seconds, then back to the show. Between that and Taye Diggs being kind of annoying, I gave up pretty early.

Looked up the winners. Things are looking pretty predictable for the Oscars, at least for acting and original screenplay (assuming the people winning so far get nominated tomorrow)

So .., you guys think Frozen 2 or Toy Story 4 will win for best animated?
Don't forget Missing Link won animated film at the Globes, and got good reviews despite doing poorly at the box office. If Toy Story and Frozen split the vote, it could sneak in there.

I think it will be Toy Story, though.
I'm still waiting for the day that voice actors have a category at the Oscars. I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet, with the big names now doing voice work. 20 years ago the voices in animated films were rarely the big names we have now. And you also have roles like Scarlett Johansson in Her from a few years ago, which many thought she should have been nominated for a regular acting Oscar in a voice-only role.

Oscar nominations are being announced live on YouTube now for anyone interested.

So far they have just done the two supporting actor categories out of the "major" ones.

Full list of nominees:

Going to get this in early and say Saoirse Ronan wuzrobbed of winning. :p

Nah. She was great, but Zellweger deserves this one. :p

But I'm really happy that Florence Pugh has a nom too! She was seriously impressive. It felt like Amy finally got to be a real person in this one (which makes it a little ironic that she's nominated for Best Supporting, but whatever, I'll take it).

The nominations seems a bit...stale compared what they could have been, but then that’s the case every year.

This is one of those years where all the winners will be super predictable:
Joker for BP
Joaquin Phoenix for Best Actor
Renee Zellwegger for Best Actress
Brad Pitt for Best Supporting Actor
Laura Dern for Best Supporting Actress

This tweet by actor Tony Revolori, probably best known for The Grand Budapest Hotel and the latest Spider-man film is literally me right now.

Kind of blah...so just take the votes, announce the winners and send the money saved to Australia.

I went to see Judy expecting a colossal trainwreck. Renee was wonderful. I even cried a couple of times. The fact that she transformed herself into the soul of Garland was captivating. It didn't even bother me that she didn't really even look like Judy and certainly didn't sing like her. Her performance was remarkable, IMO. I'm glad that not only was she nominated, but that she is a frontrunner.

I saw 1917 tonight. Quite brilliant. Certainly has deserved all it's nominations. Disappointed George McKay wasn't nominated for Best Actor because he did give an incredible performance.

Hmm. I;m considering seeing either 1917 or Parasite this week. Which is more of a must-see?

:wuzrobbed: My power went out at 7:30p and didn't come back until 10:30p. I missed the whole SAG Awards!!! No fashion! No speeches! No awkward celebrity moments! Most importantly ... no fashion!!! :drama::drama::drama::drama::drama:

I am so irate that The Farewell didn't get any nominations. WTF.

Just saw Parasite, and I hope it gets aaaaallllll the awards. I know it won't, but a girl can dream.

Lots of people whose taste I trust have raved about The Irishman, but just how many well-made films about the mob from the creative team of Scorsese, De Niro and Pacino does the world need?

So there will be zero surprises at the Oscars next month in the acting categories.

I literally laughed out loud during Brad Pitt's speech when he mentioned that the role wasn't so hard, since it entailed getting high, taking his shirt off, and not getting on with his wife.

Also, I kind of liked that Joaquin's speech today was dedicated to the other actors. I had to chuckle at his Leo anecdote.

I love that both Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston won SAG awards. And Parasite....

I saw 1917 last night. Very good. Fantastic cinematography, direction, background score, acting. Why did George Mackay not get any nominations? He was great IMO. Definitely the best movie I have seen so far this year.

Little women, which I saw couple weeks ago was just ok. Very good in some parts but overall unimpressive to me. However, I would give the best actress Oscar to Saoirse Ronan. Rene Z. Was great as Judy but Ronan was even better. This category has the potential for an upset.
