Morley Safer, of CBS 60 Minutes, has died

Morley Safer, the CBS newsman who changed war reporting forever when he showed GIs burning the huts of Vietnamese villagers and went on to become the iconic 60 Minutes correspondent whose stylish stories on America's most-watched news program made him one of television's most enduring stars, died today in Manhattan. He was 84. ... Safer was in declining health when he announced his retirement last week; CBS News broadcast a long-planned special hour to honor the occasion on Sunday May 15 that he watched in his home.
NYT obituary: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/19/business/media/morley-safer-dies.html
By the time CBS announced his retirement on May 11, Mr. Safer had broadcast 919 “60 Minutes” reports, profiling international heroes and villains, exposing scams and corruption, giving voice to whistle-blowers and chronicling the trends of an ever-changing America. ...
When he retired, CBS broadcast an hourlong special, “Morley Safer: A Reporter’s Life,” in which he revealed that he had not really liked being on television.
“It makes me uneasy,” he said. “It is not natural to be talking to a piece of machinery. But the money is very good.”

:( RIP Morley Safer.

A huge presence on 60 Minutes for 46 years -- Safer enjoyed the longest run anyone ever had on primetime network television.
Wow! Which means I watched and enjoyed his work for 46 years. Another sad loss.

He was equally great at covering both "hard" and "soft" news.
I will miss him greatly.

Thank you, for sharing your skill and wit with the world.
RIP, dear Mr. Safer.

CNN article- I just saw this.

I was shocked by this news because just last Sunday I watched 60 minutes announcing his retirement. Oddly, before I realized it was a 'retirement' show, I wondered- did he die? Later in the show I realized that he didn't, but today this news! I didn't know he was in such poor health.

I have been watching 60 minutes for a very long time so I was familiar with most of their originals. Morley Safer was the last one to leave the show. He gave us so much! May he rest in peace.

Isn't that a sad coincidence? I watched it too. And I haven't watched a whole episode of 60 Minutes for years!

He was hard when he needed to be but I loved the guy who was delighted by the unusual and off-beat. I loved to see him laugh because you knew it was real and not manufactured for his broadcasts.
