Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

Well, reportedly, she and Brad spend all their red carpet time trying to dodge each other. Must weigh on the mind.

Yeah. I think that's part of it. I tend to think there's some truth to her abuse allegations against him -- IIRC he was a full-blown alcoholic at the time. Not that I think she's blameless. I'm not a fan of the way she seems to have turned his kids against him.

Speaking as someone who comes from a family full of alcoholics and drug addicts, no one has to turn the kids against the addict. Don't forget, the divorce happened after Pitt went nuts on a plane and did something hurtful to one of his kids. (He actually hit one of them IIRC.)

He was physically assaulting Angelina in front of the kids and Maddox stood up to him / got in the way and escalated the fight between Angelina and Brad.

True enough. I had forgotten the kids were involved in that incident.

I don't know. Brad acknowledged mistakes, got help, and got sober. I think his outburst hurt his relationship with his kids, but I think Angelina nuked it. Angelina is no saint.

Also true. I believe that Angelina and Brad had a very toxic relationship toward the end of their marriage. Almost as bad as Johnny and Amber (whom I remain thankful never had children together).

That being said... I do look forward to seeing Maria. I think Angelina is a very good actress, and I've missed seeing her on screen.

Saw Conclave yesterday. I only go to theaters for movies I really want to see and this is so worth it. Its beautifully shot and Fiennes is amazing.

Agreed. Normally, I would have Conclave as the front runner for Picture, Director, Cinematography, Production Design, Editing, and Adapted Screenplay. Problem is, we have: 1) Dune: Part 2, and 2) However good The Brutalist (but I think that screenplay is original) actually ends up being.

I’ve already said this in my review, but Ralph Fiennes is my pick for Best Actor as of right now. His entire performance, but particularly his facial acting in Conclave was superb. But I’d even be okay with him winning based on a “career body of work” basis. We had to watch Will Smith win for King Richard, after all. ??‍♀️

I go all the time (conclave is #47 this year for me) but agree with you about conclave. Also I 100% would never have guessed what the plot twist was.

I enjoy him as well. Rarely disappointed in his work. The movie that I think represents him at his finest, however, is rather obvious: Schindler's List. It's the one movie I loved that, seeing it once, I have not felt the need to see it again. It broke me. I'm not a crier, but... yeah. Cried until I couldn't anymore.

I would be shocked if he does not get an Oscar nomination. He was so good. And ITA about the cinematography.

I assume you mean the final, final plot twist. Yeah, I don't think anyone saw that coming. It came out of left field. I wasn't sure how I felt about that. It seemed almost gimmicky. On the other hand, it did make it more interesting and provides for some great discussion.

Has anyone seen Lee?

Why am I not hearing about this? It is a phenomenal story and lead by Kate Winslet. I think I should be seeing this all over the place. Living in Hollywood I don’t even see billboards for it…..
I saw it last night. I thought it was very good and Kate as always was excellent. I didn't know much about Lee Miller but I found the subject fascinating.

Last week I watched a documentary on Kate from her earliest role in Heavenly Creatures (where I first saw her) until most recently. Showed lots of interviews with her. I think the role I enjoyed her in most was The Dressmaker. Maybe because it was an Australian film but she was fabulous in it. I really need to watch some of her lesser known movies.

And this morning I saw The Apprentice. I think it was excellent. Sebastian Stan, after all the various roles I have seen him, (including Tommy Lee) in I think is one of the best actors of this generation. He had the Trump character and mannerisms down pat. You could see the development of Trump's persona as it went along. Totally believable portrayal. He is truly amazing and every performance I see him in he blows me away.

Just like Nicole Kidman I don’t know if I could pick my favorite Kate Winslet film of all time. There’s so many, but the ones that stand at the top of my mind are Iris, the reader and finding Neverland, I was so excited when eternal sunshine of the spotless mind came out, but I could not get into that much.

Iris was interesting because it was one of those rare instances where two actresses are nominated for an Oscar for playing the same person in the same film.

I don’t believe I’ve heard of the dressmaker.

My favorite Kate Winslet film is and will forever be The Holiday. That film was everything romantic comedies should be, IMO, with two main couples who were extremely likeable and had great chemistry. (I wouldn't have thought of pairing Kate with Jack Black, but it really, really worked.) Plus, it was genuinely funny, with a lot of warmth and heart. I found Kate's character Iris to be immensely relatable. I would highly recommend it if you haven't seen it, and with the holidays coming up it will probably be on at least one streaming service.

Oh you have to watch The Dressmaker. It has Judy Davis and also has a Hemsworth in it :D. Definitely one of better Australian movies of the last 10 years.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was a great movie for both Winslet and Jim Carey.

I’m excited for The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. My mom, who had been involved in many church Christmas musicals loved the book and reading it became a Christmas tradition. Hopefully this version lives up to the book.

Anora is the type of movie awards voters love but film bros will complain about later if it ends up winning. Great acting and snappy dialogue and some hilarious scenes, but lacks the grandeur of some of the other offerings this year. Ignore all the awards talk and just enjoy it.

I am going to Heretic on Thursday. Super excited

I’m hearing good things about Heretic. I’m also hearing that The Substance is AMAZING and that it should be given some award love (especially Demi Moore) but there’s fears that it will be hurt because there tends to be a bias against horror movies. But it’s still in very limited release. SIGH

Meanwhile, A24 is apparently spending a whopping $70M right now on “Marty Supreme”. So…..will this is a HIT or a BOMB? Maybe they think Chalamet can pull that much $$$$. ?

I saw two movies back-to-back on Monday night.

Memoir of a Snail which was quirky, but tremendously moving. A must-see.

Saturday Night (about the launch of SNL and the ensuing chaos getting the show to air). Honestly, it felt like being trapped in a jar of pennies being shaken for 90 minutes. The story would work better as a Rolling Stone feature article than an actual film.

I'm looking forward to two Saoirse Ronan movies, THE OUTRUN and BLITZ, as well.

So…Fellow FSU movie fans….the Grammy nominations came out today. I was going to start a thread about it, but I wondered if I should make it about the entire “2024/2025 Awards Season” about the Grammys, Golden Globes, Critics Choice, SAG, BAFTA, and Oscars and we can keep all the awards discussion in one place. Or NAH and we can keep all the movie discussion here?

I know for the Golden Globes, for example, it may be cumbersome for us to be going from this thread to the TV/streaming thread during the awards ceremony. Just one example.
