Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

Well, I was kind of excited about the joker but the reviews I’m seeing are that you can forget acting nominations for Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix.

Reviews are that they really are good acting performances, but the Script doesn’t do anything and spends a lot of time in a court room discussing what happened in the previous movie.

The studio obtained Lady Gaga to play this role and did absolutely nothing with her. A waste of Lady Gaga. I’ve seen some reviews that said they should’ve made Lady Gaga the main character, and did much more with her.

However, the new album, the songs!…..the carpenters, close to you, that’s entertainment, which reminds me of Piper and Paul program, get happy wasnt that the Debbie Reynolds song from back in the day? So many great jazz songs I’m loving, loving, loving the album, so there’s a plus.

I’ll see it for the wonderful jazz songs.

Is anyone planning on going this week?
Debbie may have done it in her nightclub act, but what self-respecting gay man doesn't know that "Get Happy", fast or slow, belongs now and forever to Judy Garland?

That’s right, of course how can I forget that. I think when I was a kid my mom would always burst in to my bedroom in the morning belting out that song as Debbie Reynolds to get me to go wake up and go to school. Lol

Are you sure she wasn't singing "Good Morning" from "Singin' In The Rain" (Judy and Mickey sang it as well in "Babes In Arms")?

I don’t mean to derail this thread, but aren’t they the same song

And just for shits and giggles here was Debbie Reynolds doing it on will and grace years later

Rotten Tomatoes - Joker: Folie á Deux

😱

Guys, I apologize. I just can’t take a chance watching this in the theater. I’m still recovering from what Megalopolis did to me last week. 😣

However, if you are in the DC area (and I’m assuming other major cities as well), there are early screenings of Saturday Night showing at the AMC Georgetown right now. Saturday Night is scheduled to open nationwide on October 11. I’m tempted to go see this early. 😁

Saturday night is a contender for best picture this year. Is this really about Saturday night live?

And yes, everywhere I turn I’m seeing that the joker is like the worst movie

We have a new trailer for A Complete Unknown!

Timothée is coming for that Oscar!

This movie is starting to look better. It’s worth noting that with James Mangold’s Walk the Line, Joachim Phoenix did win the Best Actor Golden Globe for Musical/Comedy and was nominated for SAG/BAFTA/Academy Awards.

IMHO, the problem Chalamet is going to have is Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), and Colman Domingo (Sing Sing).

Could Domingo beat Chalamet for the Golden Globe? As good as Sing Sing supposedly is, it has had a very limited release in the 🇺🇸 so far. I haven’t been able to find it even in the DC area. If Sing Sing is really THAT good, I’m going to be angry at A24.

I am interested in seeing The Conclave, but it opens on Oct 25, so I have to wait till Dec to see it. I could see The Apprentice on Oct 11, but I may hold off on that. Too close to my time out/too busy.

Here’s another trailer for Anora!

This looks intriguing. 🤔

I’ve heard from critics at film festivals (Cannes, Telluride, TIFF) that either Anora or The Brutalist should win Best Picture. And Mikey Madison is apparently fabulous in Anora.

But Anora is (right now) only having a limited theater release. Only one theater (AMC Georgetown) in the DC area have it scheduled so far.

I have watched every trailer for this and I can’t figure out what the buzz is? teenagers falling in love? Lol.

And then I see that there is some drama later on, but watching the trailer for this my interest level is zero. I know there is more to the story, especially with the Oscar consideration, but from the trailers… It’s not my cup of tea.

Anora won the Palme d’Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. It might end up being the equivalent of an OES/OAS skater winning Europeans/4CCs and then we have to wait and see what happens at Worlds. 😉

And many people have LOVED Sean Baker’s previous movies, especially The Florida Project (2017).

Just to clarify something... the song that Debbie Reynolds and Lady Gaga are singing in those video clips is "Good Mornin'," NOT "Get Happy." They are most definitely not the same song.

THIS is "Get Happy."

Just got back home from watching Saturday Night. Being that it is still in its nationwide opening weekend, my review will be in spoiler.

Overall, I give Saturday Night a, 8.8/10. This movie was good!

Saturday Night is about the 90 minutes leading up to the first live broadcast of Saturday Night on October 11, 1975. It is largely told through the lens of Saturday Night's executive producer, Lorne Michaels (Gabriel LeBelle). The movie was mostly shot as a continuous scene and tries to give you an impression that everything is happening in real time.

A LOT is going wrong - cast members are fighting, the sets don't get finished until about five minutes beforehand, no one (including Michaels) knows what EXACTLY this show is about, and WHERE'S BELUSHI AND WHY WON'T HE SIGN THE CONTRACT??!! You get moments of the (now) legends that were part of the beginning: John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Gilda Ratner, Dan Aykroyd, Jim Henson, Andy Kaufman, and Billy Crystal. You also see how crazed George Carlin, the first host, was. You are also shown how much the NBC executives thought that "Saturday Night" was going to fail.

There were a couple of nitpicks that I had with this movie: 1) The movie doesn't run the 90 minutes in exact real time and there is one "slow" moment, and 2) There are no vintage clips from the real Saturday Night at the end or during the credits and a lot of people stayed in the theater because I think they expected it for a movie like this.

This was a fun movie to watch, especially if you're a fan of the nostalgia SNL. I think it may get an Oscar nomination for Original Screenplay and maybe get the one of the last Best Picture spots. And it wouldn't surprise me if Gabriel LeBelle gets a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical.

I took a trip to Stamford/Southbury/White Plains this weekend, and could not go see the substance anywhere. The closest theater was new Rochelle. Goodness gracious every single theater It was all the joker, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, smile.

I mean, is the substance considered art house cinema? I can’t believe across the hotel there were two movie theaters in Stamford, and neither one of them had the substance. So frustrating that it’s like most places it’s gonna be six screens of Star Wars and three screens of avengers, and if you want any movie With Oscar consideration, you have to go into New York City lol.

I so wanted to see it

On a sidenote, on the plane ride home I watched not M night Shyamalan but is it his daughter? the movie …the watchers. At first I was like this is gonna be lame but as the movie went on, it was actually pretty good. Did anybody ever see the watchers?

Only saw Terrifier 3. Omg so silly, hilarious gory. Loved it lol. David Howard Thornton is amazing. The humor and ottness is what causes it not to be scary.

The kids and I watched The Wild Robot. It was delightful. And beautiful. And I will happily watch it a zillion times when it’s out on streaming.
I went to it today on the recommendation of a friend and it was gorgeous I enjoyed it a lot. I'll probably buy it when it gets it's physical release. Or technically ask my brother to buy it for me since the company I work for is going out of selling physical movies. Technically so has the company my brother works for but they still get new releases.
