Kanye West in Debt

How he managed to earn millions is the biggest mystery to me... I'm not of a fan of his genre of music, but quality is quality and I don't really see/hear him having any.

Well I guess this kind of puts a hold on his presidential plans for 2020. What a shame! It could have been of more epic nutjob proportions than Donald Trump.

I don't know any of his music, don't find anything appealing in his designer clothing lines... but I don't worry for the poor, man. He became famous somehow and made money before losing it so he must have lots of fans who will help bail him out. Even if it's true he's that much in debt, he's in a much better position than most people.. and I really doubt Kim would let him starve or force him to wear clothes off the rack.

I have to say that I do quite like the music he's made, and while Hip Hop isn't necessarily my favourite genre, there's enough pop cross over to interest me, and I really really like his album 808 and Heartbreak which was purposefully more electro-pop.

He comes across as a complete egocentric prick, but then a lot of pop stars do and I still buy their music  In the talent stakes - he certainly has it in spades IMO, whereas I'm still trying to figure out why his wife is even vaguely famous or successful, and how she makes money.

Well he did make the comment later that of course he has money to provide homes for his family and enough to keep him in furs. I guess he needs "creative genius" money. I think a psychiatrist could have a field day with him. Is there any contraption that could measure brain activity dealing with ego?

About his wife and her family: I don't like them, I don't hate them, I don't watch them and I don't care about them. But somehow they have cornered the market on generating big bucks for simply being. And as much as that turns me off there is something to be said for that. I couldn't do it to save my life. So the no-talents must have something. It actually makes me more disappointed in the people who are watching them. There is so much more to see in the world.

Some info on how Kim makes money from Forbes, including ~USD 25 million on a video game in 2015 alone. There's also overseas markets for lines like this. And never underestimate the fortune that can be made in celebrity perfumes. Not long ago, more than 1000 people paid USD 300-1000 to attend a seminar in which Kim's makeup artist put on her makeup, just one of a ton of appearances that can earn her tens of thousands per event. Plus there are the tv series.

And, if she's smart and I think when it comes to money and marketing she is, it's possible she's making money on her money through investing etc. If she's really smart she's got an iron clad pre-nup and a team of lawyers and accountants keeping her money separate from his.

She might be a marketing genius. I certainly think Paris Hilton took the family name and expanded on it in her own way with all of those stores. And for that she does get my grudging respect. She could just be a trust fund baby that does nothing. And I think the Kardashians had money but not the millions we hear about now. So there is that. I simply don't understand what makes them interesting though. And I wonder if Kanye loves her or sees her as an acquisition. I hope he loves her. Either way she is stuck with him for the moment.

I thought it was pretty hilarious when they got married, and I saw posts on social media talking about her being a golddigger.

The Kardashians/Jenners have done a wondrous job of catering to a long un-served market. "From the talentless"..."to the talentless". Got no brains? No talent? Neither do we! Don't be alone, come buy our stuff and celebrate all your inabilities and inadequacies with us! All this for a low, low price of.... (Ka-Ching!)

In some ways this is what makes it a match made in marketing heaven - each brought their own following to the table, and now they cross-market as they continue to expand. Before they got together, he was well known in hip hop circles and the broader music industry - he's recorded, written and produced a lot of material, has the Grammy awards, etc. She was well known in another world - that of reality tv/celebrity/style etc. This is why I think half the world thinks she's a gold digger who's never worked a day in her life who has been "legitimized" by him, and the other half think he's just the jerk who tried to steal Taylor's Grammy who's now riding her coattails and does nothing but tweet all day.

Come to think of it, I guess this was part of the plan when she married the basketball player - cross market herself into the sports world. Anyway, so now Kanye reaches all her followers, and she reaches all his, and with every new business venture (including having kids :p) they continue to expand their reach. And of course in between actual news, she continues to post selfies and he continues to rant.

And we keep talking about them.

While I think I can laugh at anything -- even some of life's utter tragedies -- the content in these threads has me genuinely concerned for the fate of the US...and maybe society in general.

This is not in any way a knock against anything anyone has said here...just the topic, which is definitely worth discussing.

I have massive concerns that the US is likely to have a next President who has turned campaigning into reality TV, and people are eating it up. Obama was able to create a message of hope and collaboration and it helped him a lot. Not a damaging proposition. Trump's brand is all about how Americans need to be badasses again both domestically and internationally. That's at the core of what people are loving. Beneath the branding is also quite the bigoted perspective on Americans and the world. Too many people are cool with it and that truthfully saddens me when it doesn't completely scare me.

What's worse, Hillary has failed to resonate with the public again. She should have run away with the whole thing but instead we may be faced with Trump vs. Larry David for the white house seat. I see odds in favor of the GOP in that matchup. We need to embrace that this really may happen.

Then we have Kanye. He's insane. What's worse, though, is how high the ticker may go in number of people who are willing to part with $100 to actually help this dude. He has no vision for anything. He's random and crazy, yet a critical mass of people think he can change the world and even follow in Trump's footsteps, if they end up leading anywhere. I think part of it is though, that many people so desperately want to connect with or be recognized by a celebrity that they think giving money is a viable alternative to their persistent pleading to 'follow me' on their Instagram pages, which has thus far yielded no results.

I think we as a people are losing our minds at a greater rate than we have in the past. Up until now I could just laugh and shake my head. However now, we're just too willing to empower people who not only don't deserve it, but could -- if not managed properly -- play a role in dismantling one of the world's great superpowers. There's that much at stake.

((((Rock2's entire post))))

The saddest, most ironic thing about all the political campaign/trash reality TV is that it all, to me at least, makes works of fiction such as "Network" and "The Truman Show" - which were at least, on the surface, somewhat to rather extreme satires on the media and reality - look and sound shockingly tame in retrospect.

Say what you want about the man, but his music is undeniable. I'm not saying he's the greatest or even the best, but he's a had hand in some incredible music(songwriting, producing etc).

Independently of others he's produced for, Late Registration, Graduation, College Dropout, and 808 and Heartbreak are all great albums. Even his newest The Life of Pablo is worth listening to.

Shame his ego and off stage antics overshadow everything else, because he really is a talented man.

Not to mention handbags.

People are dumb enough to pay out money to see people like this so they capitalise on it. Not their fault really because people are such suckers for this kind of crap. Which is the sad thing about society these days.

I agree with everything you and Rock said but there is something that makes me sadder: I don't think a Trump has any traction at all if people perceive that our government is doing it's job. But Congress seems full of obstructionists who would rather sit on their hands then make an honest effort that includes the willingness to compromise. Scalia just died and what are the instructions regarding a new justice: Wait until the next president is elected. Give me an effing break. And, to be truthful, I do think there is a certain segment of society that hates Obama because he is black. So you get these Bubbas together with those who are sick of our do-nothing government and you get Trump. Just sad.

Is he on drugs? Or does he have a serious mental health problem? Or does he just think that this is a good way to promote his new album?

Yes, excellent points. The US gov't is so profoundly partisan that you basically need to wait until the President, Congress and Senate are all of the same party to get anything of merit passed. It's all digging in your heels and not budging, all the while waving your party flag and being drama queens about why you are thoroughly offended by opposing points of view.

What this means is that the President and his/her close circle need to be Washington insiders and strong collaborators. Bring people together. Trump would continue to be so polarizing that you can count on any dem voting NO on any of his ideas. Incidentally, same goes for Sanders and his left wing ideas. None of that will get passed if he's elected.

I'm in Toronto and many in North America may remember our crack smoking mayor that we had up until a year ago. Rob Ford. This guy was basically Trump + alcohol + crack. Big blowhard. Big ideas. All talk. Irritated and fought with everyone on council. The. Guy. Got. Nothing. Done. in his 4 years in power. We're playing catchup, big time.

Agree with this, although I think the quality of his albums has declined as he has become more famous and full of himself.

I think he's starting to have a breakdown. I hope I'm wrong about this. But even for him, his behavior is ott.

There's a potential tragic outcome for him here, given the trajectory he's on. I'll leave it at that.

We can't idolize talented people. That would be too much for our fragile egos to bear. ;)

IMHO, Kanye's primary motivation is to go down in history as the most influential black person who ever lived. He probably believes as President he could run around the world telling everyone what to do. As President, you have some clear decision making power but the rest of it is left to the house and senate to debate and decide. And they will effectively neutralize much of his crazy, which will frustrate the crap out of him. This I believe is why George Clooney steered clear of politics. He's only one person, and would have to implement an agenda through an endless series of state dinners and fundraisers where he would have to barter favors for votes. And as a Washington outsider, his 'gives' would have to be even bigger.

Kanye doesn't understand any of this. He's as intoxicated by his 20 million twitter followers as his followers are by the relationship they think they have with him. Social media has intensified the illusion of power, influence and relationship on both sides, which is having an increasingly damaging ripple effect.
