Wow, according to Wikipedia, her son Ilia Malinin was born in 2004, and was the 2017 US Intermediate champion. She and her husband Roman Skorniakov, who represented Uzbekistan in mens singles at the 98 and 2002 Olympics, also have a daughter born in 2014.

This past season, Ilia has had some International assigments at the Advanced Novice levels and has medaled at all. I think all were gold except for one silver.

I'm not sure how important it is now to win a European men's title considering the competition over the last 7-8 years. Now winning 4-5 4CC titles in a row would probably be more impressive considering the depth in North america and Asia in men's over the last 8 years.

Euros is extremely important to European skaters. That’s why you see them show up even in an Olympic year. Regardless of the fields, Fernández still had to show up and skate reasonably well for all those titles. He deserves respect for that.

European skaters can go to Euros in a Olympic season because it's held earlier then 4CC plus they have far less to travel to compete since they are all on one continent. 4CC on the other hand is usually in Asia so Japan and China might send their top skaters but Canada and the US can't afford to fly 14 hours one way compete then come fly home another 14 hours then have only about a week to get ready with no real rest in between then fly another 13 hours to South Korea.

I remember Fernandez's first European title 2013. It was important to him. To Spain. To his die-hard fans. One of the FSU gang named him Javier the Humble, when he came to have a toast with us. He has done so much good to his sport in his country, that I really appreciate him to try to do the number 7.

In fact, European skaters have been going to Euros before there was a Winter Olympics or World Figure Skating Championships. It is a prestigious event in its own right for European skaters no matter who is competing or when it is held.

Thats SO AWESOME. Looks like Spain as a country is gaining ground in Dance...but thats about it. Pairs and Ladies and a man after Javi are almost non existent.... I hope Spain starts to thrive!

But Karl Schafer has 8 (consecutive) titles...

As much as I'm going to miss Javi's skating, I'm really glad he was able to go out on his own terms, accomplishing all he wanted to in his career. He truly had an outstanding career, surpassing everyone's expectations, and became a favourite of many around the world.

I'll never forget his SP at the 2011 Skate Canada. His first grand prix competition with Orser, where he came out and amazed everyone with what he did, winning the SP and his first GP medal, and made people take notice, realizing this guy could really do something.

Overall Europe's been weak for a couple decades +! Surya Bonaly owned it for a while back in the 90's winning 5! She was rarely close to doing anything outside of it and was one of the people's faves!
