I, Tonya

@bardtoob - thanks for that video, that was fascinating to watch.

And it brings up one other big gripe I have with the movie: Tonya may have not had the best costumes in the world, but WHY did every copy on Robbie appear to be too small across the bottom???? Her butt was never covered, and in real life, Tonya may have liked the shorter skirt look, but half her ass was not hanging out of her dresses; they generally fit pretty well. I know, artistic license, probably to make her dresses look cheaper and tackier, but really unnecessary and frankly, unfair.

Thank you for posting that. 91-94 were magical for me for figure skating. For me, will be my Golden Years of watching skating!!!!

The '94 Olympic men's competition was got me watching skating as I recall. I remember that CBC did an excellent promo about 'the Godfather' and 'the martial artist' in the style of a filmic competition that really engaged me.

However, I think that seeing coverage of the Harding/Kerrigan incident might have preceded that in terms of piquing my interest in FS.

I still remember turning on my TV or tuning into it to watch some skating event from that competition. Proved to be a turning point in my life as a FS fan. :)

Truth be told, for me it was probably the gorgeous Urmanov (IMO) in ruffles that sealed the deal. His (angelic) smile when he completed that program - oh my. :slinkaway

Urmanov was a great skater. He wasn't liked by Collins or Hamilton though. I did see him live at our local club show one year (other guests were the Czisny twins- before Amber got too tall for singles, and before Alyssa was a national champ (I have seen Alyssa many times starting in bg when she was 3, and at the local club show (post-competitive retirement in Findlay a couple of years back.)

and who didnt lurve some Brasseur & Eisler

and Mishkutenok & Dmitriev!

How does one get "too tall" for singles?????
Amber ended up about 5'8". She had injuries and lost her jumps. She tried ice dance for a while but finding a male partner tall enough was difficult. Alyssa is 5'4 , excellent spinner, and good jumps (when she lands them).

I can understand her being too tall for certain dance partners, but I doubt her height was solely responsible for losing her jumps and her injuries.

Maybe cmk was referring to skaters who lose their jumps after they grow. Some skaters probably never do get them back consistently, and have to end their competitive careers.

I enjoyed this movie. The skating scenes were well done aside from the CGI face and that all the competitions obviously took place in the same rink.

I am old enough to remember the whole scandal. I was already a skating fan when it happened. I remember liking them both as skaters. I liked most of the other skaters from that era to be honest like Kristi, Midori, Jill Trenary, etc. I’ve never really felt strongly about Tonya’s guilt/innocence one way or the other. I do not know any of these people personally. It does not impact my life one way or the other! lol

After I watched the movie, it piqued my interest in the whole thing again. I did the same thing that many people apparently do – I went on Youtube and watched all of the Tonya and Nancy clips I could find! LOL I also read the horribly written books, and looked up some old articles and blog posts. There is a lot of bad reporting out there! Honestly, the more I look into the evidence, the more I think that she was probably not in on it. Should he have realized what was going? Yes! Did she? I think it’s entirely possible that she did not. She might not be guilty of conspiracy to assault however she is without a doubt guilty of what she actually pleaded guilty to - hindering the prosecution – she found out in Detroit imo. The evidence in the case is very, very odd. Plus all of the people involved lied to some extent to the authorities in an effort to make themselves look better. Some of that was reported as fact by the media.

If Tonya is innocent, I bet the version of the story that Jeff told the screenwriter of I,Tonya is actually what he told Tonya so she would cover it up with him in the beginning! LOL “I swear it was only supposed to be a death threat! Shawn’s the one that told them to assault her! I didn’t know!” She actually said in her book that that’s what he told her – that Shawn did it himself! Jeff never admitted to her that he had done it so she never even knew for sure what happened. She thought Jeff had to be in on it because Shawn was too much of an idiot to pull it off himself.

There are several reasons why I feel that she might not be as guilty as we were lead to believe including this little tidbit:

The pompous prosecutor obviously enjoys seeing himself on TV as he inevitably shows up in all the shows at some point exclaiming “she was caught red-haaaanded!” because of the handwritten notes. Funny that he never mentions one of the main reasons they gave Tonya a plea bargain on a lesser charge. All of the evidence against her was directly linked to Jeff; he would have been their star witness against her. However, the prosecutors also knew that Jeff had lied in at least one of his stories that supposedly proved Tonya’s involvement: After Shane Stant missed his last chance to get Kerrigan in Massachusetts; Jeff said in his statement that Tonya was so furious she called the arena herself to find out if Nancy had practiced that day. However, the woman who took the call at the rink said that she had spoken to a man. The date/time she said she took the call matched Jeff/Tonya’s home phone records so it was actually Jeff that made the phone call! Hmmm.

I think she absolutely knew that something was up when she write down the information about where/when Nancy practiced (I think the 'when' was part of it?). But, she remained in denial about it and I don't think that the players involved shared the details with her.

That handwritten note is certainly the biggest piece of evidence against her. She was really gullible and dumb when it came to Jeff so there is a possibility that she didn’t know the real purpose of obtaining the information. He actually shared how he could have duped her into getting the rink information in his FBI statement.

The evidence related to the handwriting is this:

The FBI handwriting expert claimed that the name and address were in her handwriting. The phone number was not Jeff and “highly probable” her. The training costs on the other side that equal the money ($6500) the hit was going to cost was written by Jeff. Tonya wrote some of the other training related notes below that. Everything else (random numbers, doodles ) on the envelope was inconclusive or no opinion.

Tonya called a skating reporter friend to find out where Kerrigan lived and trained - that damning Tunee Can Arena note in her handwriting apparently starts with this call. Tonya told the reporter friend that she was asking because she had a bet with Jeff. According to Jeff’s statement, he told Tonya to tell the reporter that she wanted to compare her training times with Kerrigan’s (to sort of get an upper hand on the competition) - this is how he could have duped her.

This means she would have been a real idiot but well she certainly has acted like a complete idiot at other times. I guess it’s possible that Jeff tricked her into getting the information for him by nagging her that she was being lazy again and not training enough. Jeff: “Tonya, you still haven’t lost weight and I’m worried that you’re not training enough! Do you want a repeat of Albertville? How can you expect to land a triple axel at the Olympics with those thunder thighs? That Kerrigan bitch looks like she hasn’t eaten anything since 1989! I bet she skates like 10 hours a day! I want to find out. Where does she live anyway?” Tonya: “Oh shut up or I’ll file for divorce! Oh damn. I already did that. Why are still you still here anyway?”

That’s how they start looking through the skating books and get into a fight like she mentions in her book. Then she calls the reporter and one of them calls the rink. She could care less about any of it except to win the argument. When he sees that Nancy does not skate much more than her, he'll leave her alone.

A few days later before leaving for nationals, she’s talking on the phone with her secret lover Paul (ha – look at the envelope) who wishes her good luck. She scribbles his name and doodles his picture on the envelope with Kerrigan’s practice times as they’re talking. She then throws the piece of scrap paper in the trash not realizing it will be used as evidence against her later. Oops!

We see this sort of play out in the hilariously cheesy 1994 tv movie: in her interview with the authorities, she originally said that she had made the calls to Nancy’s rink. She said it was to ask Nancy if she would autograph an old photo of the two of them with Kristi. It was at this point that the detective said he knew she was lying. He had been waiting for her to get to this part of her story all along because, unbeknownst to Tonya and Jeff, Shawn had already confessed and blabbed to the authorities about the cover- up story they came up with the day after Jeff and Tonya came back from Detroit.

After this, they took a break in the questioning and she spoke to her lawyer alone for over an hour. When she came back, she said she really did not make calls to the rink. What’s curious about this part of her interview is that while she was telling them that she made the calls to the rink, she apparently couldn’t name the rink, and her story of how she obtained the phone number did not match the phone records. The phone records showed that the rink number was obtained via directory assistance in Oregon and then Boston. I thinks she said she had obtained the phone number from the USFSA. Is it possible that she got the rink information from other means (USFSA)? That would mean that she threw the envelope in the trash later before Jeff actually had a chance to make the calls! LOL! He would have remembered the name of the rink and called directory assistance to obtain the number again, and destroyed that evidence later.

Tonya has to be the one that put the envelope in the trash before she left for Detroit because Jeff and Shawn had both said they destroyed all of the other evidence (including the audiotape) after the attack. That she didn’t destroy it would mean that 1 – she was not a very smart criminal or 2 - she didn’t know how the information was actually going to be used.

Say, does any-one know where tuna can arena is and do they still have skating meats there? My wife and I are thinking about going to see a live event soon, we originally would of done Detroit but with all the crime there we are worried we would need to upgrade weapons and I cannot afford a bazooka and a trip to skating in the same year! If tuna can has some thing, we could go there assuming it is in a safe city and share memories about the crime that Tonya should of be thrown in the slammer for life for!

Wow, a “brand new” member with so much information on how Tonya could possibly be innocent of much wrongdoing. After all this time. And “brand new.” Just wow...

Those "thunder thighs" were why she was able to land the 3axel. That was muscle, not fat. There is actually video of Tonya landing 3axels in practice at 94 nationals so she was more than capable of doing it. She didn't need to risk it to win over 13 year old Michelle though, and I don't think she needed it to beat Nancy either. She needed it to win over Kristi, but Nancy was no where close to Kristi or Tonya on a talent level, or even baby Kwan.

Um, ok. Thanks for the warm welcome?
This web sight is filled with people who want to be mad, angry, and up-set about everything! My wife and I both started posting hear a few months ago and she ("Bonnie") is all ready afraid to come most days and nights. You have to just 'ignore' many people, other wise the real meanies like Titanic Aroma will tell you your ugly and call you a retard like he has to so many in the past.

There is very good info to help with travel and gun safety, tho. So its worth it for me to stay here and join the fun chats.

I think Tonya is a killer and should be behind bars, I continue to ask all of you to join my wife and I as we boycot Dancing of the Stars and turn off the electrics in our home when its on and pray!

I guess you guys didn't like my little reenactments there. Tough crowd. lol Of course, she most likely knew. After going back and reading some of those articles, the whole thing just seems more convoluted than I had remembered. I can understand why Nancy laughed when she read the FBI documents. I had forgotten some of the really silly stuff like the bodyguard telling them it wasn't Shane Stant in Detroit, it was his more violent brother Lance! And that he said his goons accidentally stole Nancy's car when they were spying on her. LOL It was like they were playing this really absurd game of telephone.

How many costume/skate malfunctions did that girl have anyway? I only remembered the broken lace thing and the dress at nationals, but there are a few others on Youtube. There's one competition where she does the warmup in a black costume and then comes out later in a blue costume for her program!
