I, Tonya

nobody snuck up on unsuspecting people and forced meth on them. What Ford did to those poor Pinto owners is way way worse than any drug dealer so before we spend all day playing “who’s more immoral, school bus or light bulb?” Let’s admit this is apples and oranges and Nancy’s free will to participate never played into the attack.

I do not think people on the market for Crystal Meth have much of a choice about using it, which is why it is so profitable . . . exceptionally steep demand curve, and what not.

I have as much compassion for Crystal Meth users as Nancy, although I would have Nancy over to my house but avoid Crystal Meth users.

One thing I wish I heard Tonya's opinion about was Michelle Kwan. I remember during the 2002 Olympics the day of the LP after Kwan was leading in the SP, Entertainment Tonight said that they will air a segment on Tonya the next day and we'll hear what she thought of Michelle Kwan. I never got to watch that segment or know if they even bothered to air it after Sarah Hughes ended up upsetting the competition and won gold. I was too busy grieving.

Tonya Harding 1989 Skate America SP.

Just posted on Youtube. This is the where she beat Trenary. I don't think I've seen the sp before though.

That's fun to see. An awesome find :respec:

. . . I want to say that she used the portion of the music that evokes images of cowboys and westerns ( . . . Copland?) prior to this but she had much more goofy lassoing arm movements. The thigh slapping was a much better alternative.

By 1990 US Nationals she has changed her SP music to Two Tribes by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, which was probably the best SP of her career.

. . . None the less, beating Jill Trenary at 1989 Skate America was a pivotal point in Tonya's career.

The USFSA came up with this list of evidence, apparently taken from the FBI transcripts, but we've heard most of it before: https://peopledotcom.files.wordpress.com/2016/12/tonya-harding-1.jpg

Thanks for posting this, because I forgot about Stant being told by Shawn that Tonya recognized him in the hotel lobby, right down to describing what he was wearing.

It also says that after arriving at Nationals, Stant decided to move the attack from Kerrigan's hotel room, to the practice rink. (Why???)

Unless that story was made up by Ekhardt and Stant to implicate Tonya, there goes my theory of Tonya going into nationals thinking the attack was not going to happen since they missed Kerrigan in Massachusetts. She knew at very least something was going to happen, it's just she was expecting it to happen at Kerrigan's hotel room, not rink-side, out in front of witnesses and camera people.

Tonya is the one who keeps exposing herself to more scrutiny; and potential criticism.
Well actually no. People have to show an interest and then the exposure follows. If people didn't give a rats we wouldn't even be having this conversation. Obviously the movie producers thought this was a story worth telling. And in promoting a movie you are going to do what you can and that means people want to talk to the subject at hand. I have no problem if Tonya goes along with it or makes money out of it. It is her life, regardless what our personal opinions are. There are people who are more morally corrupt or have done really bad things in this world who have had movies made about them and reaped the benefits. Good luck to her.

Nancy could do the same thing too but I am sure it wouldn't be as interesting or entertaining.

Shane Stant was interviewed over the phone by Nanette Burstein, the director of "The Price of Gold" and somewhat changed his tune. He's apparently become religious now and said he had no idea whether Tonya was involved. He also changed his appearance and is unrecognizable, so he didn't want a face-to-face interview to appear on the documentary.

How abusive was Tonya's mom really? She worked 3 jobs to support Tonya's skating. Not only that she made her costumes.. I haven't watched the movie yet so I have no clue..

I've not read a single nice word about her since 1994. The writer of "I, Tonya" recently stated that Lavonna's awfulness was one of the only things both Tonya and Gillooly agreed upon when they were interviewed.

There are a multitude of interviews with her on YouTube. I believe she was a woman who meant well but, like Tonya, clearly has a way of constructing her own reality. In one I was watching yesterday from the 90's, LaVonya Golden claims she was never abusive but readily admits to being "corrective" with all her children. You can take that for whatever you think it might mean.

Yes, Tonya will eventually come back to her senses and get back with him. He's been a staunch supporter of hers for years.

As much I don't love TSL, they posted a screenshot of his Facebook message about dropping Tonya on their Facebook page. Yes, indeed, she did insist that reporters stop asking about the past and wanted them fined $25K if they did. Apparently the concept of the First Amendment escapes Ms. Harding like it does our POTUS...

"That night I tried to tell my mom and dad what happened," Harding says. "My dad didn't want to believe it, and my mother slapped me and told me to get in my room. To this day she doesn't believe me."

"He did have a problem with drinking," admits LaVona. "I wouldn't put it past Chris to try and get a kiss. Tonya has a vivid imagination. She has a tendency to tell tall tales."

"After Chris got out of jail, he told me, 'If I ever catch you alone, you won't be around anymore,' " says Harding.

I think there is a lot of potential truth to claims of abusive. Wouldn't any sane person in denial try to completely explain away Tonya's claim of attempted rape by her half-brother rather than only minimize the claim to "alcoholic half-brother trying to kiss his half-sister". It is so WEIRD AND CREEPY! TO WHAT END DOES ANY DRUNK GUY TRY TO KISS ANY WOMEN!

I've noticed Tonya used the phrase "you won't be around anymore" to describe what both of her accused sexual assaulters (half-brother and Gillooly & friends) told her as a threat. Is it just hard for her to use the phrase "I'll kill you" or ?

There is a certain vernacular of American English where "you won't be around anymore" is acceptable but "I'll kill you" is too crass or direct.

The more clips I see released of tonight's interview to more angry I get (going back to my original rant). I think I'm going to record it tonight and watch it over the weekend. I don't think I'll be able to take listening to her sit there and lie and then get all riled up yelling at the TV about why the producers did not go after her lies like a good reporter would. Because from the various clips I'm seeing and the entertainment show comments, its all 'oh poor poor Tonya and all those mean people around her she's such an innocent victim'. I hope I am wrong and the producers did their job and pulled up old footage to show her contradicting herself, and show us the truth from the evidence and not "Tonya's truth", but from what I'm seeing in clips and comments, that's not what is going to happen. Its looking like this is all pure 'lets redeem her, we never understood her, she is the victim' crap. I guess we shall see, and I hope I am wrong. But I'll be watching it later instead of tonight.

Both Margot Robbie and Allison Janney just won Critics Choice awards for Best Actress and Supporting Actress in a Comedy

I don't think Janney won anything...yet. There's no category for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy (for film).

I believe there were eye-witnesses to LaVona beating Tonya in the rink bathroom. It's probably already been mentioned in this thread, but people were dissuaded from reporting LaVona to CPS because then Tonya probably wouldn't be able to skate anymore.

Yes, I posted about the Facebook post upthread and that's why people were talking about Rosenberg. Maybe you have me on ignore? :shuffle:

I don't understand if it makes you so angry, why even watch it?

Whatever sentence Tonya received; it was less than a charge that would have required a prison sentence
She was very fortunate.
I hope she realizes that.

As they showed in the film, she would have preferred an 18 month prison sentence, like Jeff got, to her lifetime ban, which was essentially a life sentence.

Um, wow. I didn't know that either.

I think skateindreams' point was that the plan could have been crazier considering Shawn Eckhardt and the people who were involved. Conspiracies to harm can go out of control and Nancy could have been more seriously harmed cand Tonya would have been in much bigger trouble. Instead of the relatively light sentence Tonya ended up having, Tonya could have faced major jail time. Whatever jail time she would have received (like Jeff's 18-month sentence) she still would have received a lifetime ban from USFS.

No, I read your post and found it first on TSL's Twitter - my fault for thinking you wrote about the tweet, not the Facebook page. I did not have you on ignore. Yes, you posted it first. My additional comment was the ludicrousness of her thinking she could charge people money for asking her questions she didn't like.

Olivia Munn just did a small skit at the Critics' Choice Awards. They did a fake trailer for a movie called I, Nancy where she played Nancy and she goes "wtf?!" about a movie being made about Tonya. Then she says, "She said she didn't know, huh? Ok, whatever..."

Hope Tonya wasn't there...:shuffle:
