What a difference a week makes. Last Monday I was looking up at the sky to see something spectacular that was about to start! :)
Today I'm looking up at the sky, thinking about the poor people and animals of Texas, and wishing it would just...stop! :(
What a week.

I'm right there with you. For years growing up, my family and I would go each summer to Houston where my Aunt and Uncle used to live. We always went to the Houston Zoo and then we would go to Sea-Arama Marineworld in Galveston to see the dolphins and the orca. It closed in 1990, but I still have photos of the dolphins and the orca. I feel lucky now to have those pics because it was part of Galveston's history for several years.

I wish they would not keep asking people if they've ever seen anything like this before. Unless they were with Noah on the ark, uh, no. I guess they don't know what else to ask.

Since you quoted me in regards to saying that nothing like this has ever happened before, I want to be more specific about that. I've lived in one town in northwestern Louisiana all my life, and never experienced anything like this happening for 58 years (soon 59 years). I live 157 miles north of Holly Beach, Lousiana, 129 miles north of Lake Charles, Louisiana and 185 miles north/northeast of Houston, TX.

Up until 2005, a hurricane had never reached my town that far inland bringing drastic conditions. No one could believe it in my town that we would actually get 85 mph winds coming up that far, but we did. That was a first during my lifetime, and scary as hell. It was then considered a tropical storm by the time the eye reached us, and the winds dropped down to 65 mph.

Now is the second time that my town will experience conditions of thunderstorms and steady rain that is coming off of a hurricane. This is the second day here of light to medium steady rain. By Tuesday and Wednesday, there will be anywhere from 100% to 90% chance of heavy thunderstorms that will continue non stop. So twice in my lifetime, my town will experience conditions coming this far inland off of a hurricane.

No, I wasn't there with Noah and his ark, but at present time, I've never experienced anything like this ... at least not in my town.

My heartfelt prayers for the victims in Houston and elsewhere regarding Harvey. I do have a first cousin that lives in Lake Charles, and she and her family left a few days ago to stay with my aunt and cousin that lives in Haughton, Louisiana which is close to Shreveport, Louisiana.

I'm glad to hear that the Houston Zoo is in good shape, but I also worry about livestock on those Texas ranches. I'm just a sucker for animals. The sight of that horse standing all alone on the road in the dark after the Japan tsunami still haunts me to this day. :(

Just got word from one of my friends I worked with at E-911 in Mansfield. I worked with her on the same shift when I was there.

She posted on Facebook that two of our local fire depts. (District 8 and District1) along with the DeSoto Parish EMS are headed to Houston to render help where needed and are also bringing supplies.

Praying that they have a safe trip and God bless them. <3

Yesterday I suddenly remembered that a very good friend of one of my cousins lives in Houston. I just posted on her Facebook to let us know how she is. My gut says she and her husband got out in time, to stay with one of their kids, but I hope to hear from her soon.

ETA- just saw her response to another poster that they are ok.
She is in DC. Husband is in Houston but he and their house is ok.

Thank goodness for that. <3

Another socioeconomic divide brewing on the same scale as Katrina. The fancier neighborhoods tend to be on higher ground to start with. From what I'm seeing, it's the working class neighborhoods taking the biggest hit.

80% of New Orleans flooded during Katrina. Homes from all economic classes were hit hard. The Ninth Ward just got more national media coverage. The evacuation situation was a different story (people with less resources not getting out in time).

Are you referring to Houston? I'm not seeing this divide. We have well off areas such as Bellaire and Meyerland that are flooding. And most of inner loop Houston, where lots of the flooded bayous are, have some of the most expensive real estate. I'm currently at my sister's in Fort Bend county and there are some master planned communities being forced to evacuate at the moment.

I stand corrected. My initial impressions were based on a conversation with a friend who lives northwest of the center. Still, recovery is always hardest on the paycheck to paycheck people. Where to start?

If I quoted you and then wrote something it would have been the one paragraph under your quote. The other paragraphs would just be related stuff so I could try not to post twice in a row. I forgot I should put "miscellaneous other thoughts" first to be clearer. I have no idea if YOU said you'd never seen anything like this before. I was referring to the news people asking everyone being rescued and the officials and the rescuers and anyone passing by that same question. Nobody said they have. It was (still is) on par with that tsunami a few years ago. I don't think anybody's been through two of those. But, like I said, I guess they just don't know what else to ask.

OTHER STUFF -

This morning they were interviewing some guy named Aaron who had lost everything and couldn't find his family and he was in tears and I got chills. I went in and took a shower, came back out and turned on the t.v. and CNN (I think) had gotten in touch with his father and he was talking to him on the phone. I got chills again.

I keep going off and doing stuff and coming back to the t.v....
One report said they encouraged people to bring their pets when being rescued (unlike Katrina) and that they have a room at the convention center for people with pets in case other people are allergic or uncomfortable. So sweet!!

Go Texas! More (((hugs))).

Just to give you some idea how off the charts this rainfall is, here is Lexington, MA, I have recorded 33.29" of rain so far this year. Some places around Houston have had this and more in just 3 days!

I just want to say it's 60* and raining here and I just put on a robe and slippers. I would send my whole drawer full of socks to Houston if I could!

Just reporting in. We're having a small break from the rain in Mansfield at the moment. This evening, it's suppose to start up again. From this evening through Thursday, it's going to get worse. I just got a notice from the National Weather Service that my area and all of DeSoto Parish may get anywhere from 8 to 12 inches of rain. We are now under a flash flood warning. It gave warnings about flooding of roads, low lying areas and poor drainage areas where flooding could occur at any time. I know there are certain roads in my town that will definitely flood, but I believe the worst conditions will be for areas in Logansport that will flood because of the Sabine River.
