Hurricane Harvey coming at Texas

I hope that all of you near the affected areas are safe. I also hope the USA Gymnastics doesn't make the ladies team do any workouts outdoors or anywhere dangerous. We don't need any more injuries and the US teams are smaller now. I hope Simone Biles stays safe too.

I'm with my parents in the Houston metro area about 60 miles inland. Fortunately I'm not on the coast, and we did go through Hurricane Ike nine years ago, so we are prepared, but obviously Harvey will be much, much worse. I will be keeping all FSUers in Texas and Louisiana in my prayers.

I never could understand people that dont evacuate when they are told to. I am the type that follows warnings

Electricity holding steady for now.

BTW, I am not in a mandatory evacuation area. They seemed to have kept the mandatory areas very small this time. I guess to try to keep the roads clear?? Anyways, I am not ignoring any warnings & most of the county I live in is in "hunker down" mode. I would have tried to evacuate anyway except that my boyfriend is not allowed to leave his job until it is safe enough to do so. I didn't want to travel alone & I'm afraid enough for him as it is & don't want to ditch him in case he's sent home soon.

My post was not directed to you. I didnt know if you had received evacuation announcement.

Be safe and let us know that you are safe.

While there may be some stubborn people, I suspect that evacuation is not just a get in your car and leave scenario for most who stay.
It costs a lot to evacuate. You might not have transportation, you might not have a place to go, you might not have money to eat, poverty does not care if you are in the path of a tornado or hurricane or other natural disaster. Poverty traps you in the path of storms.

:(

Local news is saying we may get an evacuation notice by Sunday. We are not in the direct path of the hurricane, but we are in a bigger danger of the San Bernard and Brazos rivers flooding.

@Amy L and @LKR, Keeping y'all and anyone else close to this horrific hurricane in my thoughts and prayers. As with what @once_upon mention about people staying when there's an evacuation notice: that's exactly what happened with the people stranded in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita.

So many people were at poverty level and had no way to leave. I was an EMD at E-911 during both of those hurricanes. There were people that did manage to get away with only the clothes on their backs. Some didn't even have shoes and were barefooted. Some had to leave their fur babies behind.

Those people had to stay in shelters for a long time. My co-workers and I went through our closets gathering clothes, shoes, etc. to take to two of the shelters that were very close to our area. Those people were so appreciative of anything they received. We took up donations and also brought food and canned goods to them, too.

So far, everything is okay in my area. It's very cloudy, but it's not really windy and no rain yet. According to the future forecast, my area will begin receiving those heavy rains beginning Tuesday, August 27th through Sunday, September 3rd. Stay safe everyone.

Things are okay here so far. Last night we got a lot of rain and only some heavy winds. My boyfriend was released from work at 6am. He's okay but he looked like a drowned rat. My job opened late so I'm expected to show up for my shift tonight. :blah: We have thunderstorms predicted every day for the next week so flashfloods are going to be an imminent threat for a long time.

Just turned on tv. They are saying it's a cat 1 now, but still it looks awful. The really bad thing is the storm is going to last through the middle of next week. It's not just a one or two days storm, and it's going to take several weeks to clean up. Damage must be very very high.

There is an article on WaPo that has some comments from people in the eye of the storm. One is an elderly man who thought he was on the list for evacuation assistance but apparently was not. He is legally blind and cannot drive and he has a disabled son in his care. These are the people left behind - the most vulnerable.

John Edwards may have proven himself to be a creep, but he was spot on about there being two Americas. There is the America of the Louise Lintons of the world, who easily toss $10,000 on an Hermes handbag, no doubt one of many in her closet, who days trips to sit (via a government plane!) atop Fort Knox to view the eclipse.

And then there is the America for whom $10,000 is more than they will ever have in their lifetime, for whom the most simple of daily affairs is a challenge.

There is so much that disturbs me about the Trump era, but the contemptuoud disregard for those less fortunate is particularly offensive. Remember that this is the group that tried to take healthcare from those who most need it to fund their tax cuts. I sincerely hope that @Wyliefan is right and that they will have their day of reckoning. Should it come to pass, I don't think it will be merciful.

Hi everyone, we got lots of rain and wind last night (but no worse than Ike), off and on for a few hours, but no flooding or damage. I'm with my parents for the month at their house near NRG Stadium. Central Houston seems to have come away relatively unscathed; sadly Corpus Christi and nearby Rockport weren't so fortunate. Thoughts and prayers are with any FSUers seriously impacted by the Storm.

I've been thinking about you all day, and still keeping you in my prayers. I just got a notification from my Weather Channel App, and I'm afraid it's changed some for my area in DeSoto Parish, too. The thunderstorms will be here starting around 6:30 P.M. It looks like the thunderstorms will be around until the 5th of September. :(

I've been seeing on the news all the damage in Rockport and Galveston. The Ferry is closed and I also saw some news about Thousands stuck on cruise ships waiting out the storm.

This was posted on FB by someone my husband knows. She lives in a nice area of Houston (they're employed by NASA) but that's all I know, geographically.

'Looks like we could get flooded into the house. It is almost up the crest of the driveway. We lost electricity and have started to move things to the second floor. Please pray for everyone and pray for the rain to stop.'

So far all my relatives in Houston are ok but the next feeder band might change that.

Watching the feed of one of the local Houston TV stations and now that its daylight, the copters are out doing roof rescues. Going to need lots of boats too; this is when civilians that have flat bottom/air boats can help save lives. I know a group that just left the Baton Rouge area to go over and help.

I believe the category of the storm is determined by the level of wind, but for this storm, its the volume of rain that is highly concerning. Whether it's a 2 or a 3 or even a 1, a lot of rain is going to fall and that's the primary threat.

FYI, this is the wind speed scale used for hurricanes - NOAA's Saffir-Simpson scale:

www.weather.gov/hgx/tropical_scale

It also gives an estimate of the damage that can occur in each category.

My best friend lives in Houston (loop area) is fine, aside from losing power last night (it's back) but has told me there's terrible flooding in the roads near her, including the one she uses to get to work and her company's garage.

Hope all our FSUers are still safe.
