China and Japan are starting now. Looks like the British did very well. Max and Nile tied for second in the AA after Purvis. Tiebreaker to Max. Will Fabian still qualify for AA? He's down the list but maybe 2 per country will save him.
 
I want to ask a question for the gymnastics experts here:
Would it have been better for Chuso to do 2 vaults in the qualifications to assure that she got to the finals, and then only do the Produnova once? I'm sure that she could have gotten into the finals with 2 vaults in her repertoire. Was this bad planning?

The standard on vault was pretty high this year. I looked at the scores and she would have needed a 15.2 on her first vault to qualify - that means a 9.0 E score for a Rudi vault, or a 9.4 E score for a layout front-full. I don't think that would have been possible based on her recent form and I don't know if she has even competed the rudi vault lately. At Cottbus earlier this year she did the layout front full for a 14.925 for example.
 
Yeah, this is one of the rare years where lots of people didn't qualify to finals; there was some good vaulting being put up. I like it that way; keeps it from being seen as a "lesser" event. And, people really need to get over the strategy of going for a vault you KNOW you won't land just because it's difficult enough. While I'm sad for Chuso, I'm never sad when that particular strategy doesn't play out.
 
Romania should be glad that the team qualification system is not best 12 teams qualifying for the Olympics. There 13 rank will at least allow them to try at the test event to qualify.
 
I am! Well, half-watching. While I make lunch and attempt to do some housework.

Really stinks that the team has to finish on pommels. But I guess maybe they can have 5 good events until then and some good juju will power them through the event.
 
Yep - Brandon and Donnell were GREAT on rings! :) Not sure if Donnell can hang on enough to make the EF.

I think the PH was going to be a problem for the US men regardless. I just hope they don't choke before then.

What on earth happened to the German and Ukrainian men? Hard to believe that they weren't 4th in the 2008 (Germany) and 2012 (Ukraine) Olympics.
 
Both of Whittenburg's and Ruggeri's vaults were pretty good. Problem is, they are in 7th and 8th place for the vault EF right now. Crossed fingers.

I hope the U.S. men don't make me post cranky on here. I am watching this while being sick from work.

BB: Nichols, Raisman, Biles

Maggie on bars instead of Simone!!! No real surprises otherwise, other than maybe Gabby vs. Aly on vault.

ETA: Interesting that it's Nichols doing all 4 events in team finals when there were a lot of people suggesting she could/would be the alternate before the final team was announced.

On the flip side, Leyva is #1 on HB with that fantastic 15.566! :biggrinbo Was he always that world class on high bar? Chris Brooks is currently in 6th place for the HB EF.
 
Unsurprisingly, the US men bombing PH, already having to count one score in the 12s. Hopefully Leyva gets things back on track.

Wow - Maggie doing all four events in finals! I think her stock has definitely gone up with Marta in the past couple of days. Bet Marta is really wishing she had put Maggie up on bars in prelims because she could have been a better bet than Douglas in the AA finals.

Leyva is currently 4th for the all around - he had a pretty great day. Whittenburg is 30th - not sure if he will get in.

Anyone else thinking that Marvin Kimble has a real shot of making the Rio team if he improves his skills? Didn't he win the PH at the Pan Am Games? It must have been rough to be watching from the stands.

Interesting. Gabby fell on BB yesterday and is not in EF. Ditto: Aly's big steps on VT and she is passed over for EF.

Whittenburg is currently 25th after the 2 per country rule is applied, which makes him the first alternate, if no one else passes him in the last session. He would only get to compete if someone withdraws who is not from Japan, China, Great Britain or Russia (as they all have athletes who are in the top 24 but won't compete because of the 2 per country rule and these athletes could replace a withdrawal from their own country).
 
MAG - if my calculations are correct
JAP: 2AA, 5EF
CHN: 2 AA, 6EF
GB: 2AA, 5EF
RUS: 2AA, 1 EF!
USA: 1AA, 9EF!

This is really interesting - basically the USA has a team of specialists, and could walk away with the most medals but miss out on a team medal. They definitely benefit from 3 up 3 count.


ETA: USA was probably also well served by going so late in the day. GB and RUS suffered with early starts.
