Gymnastics News #15

A word on Brittany Rogers from Canada, just back from NCAA, contributed 3 big routines, a 15 ( vault) a 14.1 (bars) and. 13.5 (beam) combined with a mentor role within the team, I'm convinced they wouldn't be top 8 without her and it just goes to show how one athlete can make all the difference.

I agree @poths - I've been fousing a lot on Ellie Black's success, but Brittany was the difference this year that got Canada into team finals. I was hoping she could get into vault finals but the field was just too deep this year. And I think it's pretty cool that gymnasts from India and Mexico made vault finals, so I can't be too upset about how the vault finals field ended up.

ETA: and finally, respect to Dipa Karmakar. She clearly loves her sport, her form on beam, UB and floor has massively improved and she is competing some serious moves. Her front pike and front tuck connected to leaps on beam are possibly the highest and most secure of the whole competition. And she has a double L turn on floor that the British girls would kill for!

For an athlete who comes from a country with no infrastructure or coaching tradition and has no training partners of her standard to push her, this is really impressive IMO. She may not have the prettiest gymnastics, but she plays by the rules and has legitimately outperformed many athletes who have all of the above. She's just the kind of athlete one should see at the olympics, and it's a shame the current rules probably won't allow her to go.

The Indian federation had tried to bring in international coaches during the period before the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, but tensions and hostility resulted in a bad fallout (namely, Vladimir Chertkov, who helped Ashish Kumar to 2 Commonwealth Games medals).

I'm not sure how many individual places the Test Event will qualify (for Rio), but Karmakar still may get to the Test Event if 2 countries don't send a participant.

I am going to keep my fingers crossed for Karmakar. She deserves to at least try for an Olympic spot.

I can't stop thinking about Brenna.

I mean.. I still can't believe she made the team. That's the thing, she completely deserved to make it. That was such a huge victory in itself. How do you do the impossible, and then.. do the impossible? I just can't fathom it.

I blame Al Fong and Armine for everything. Those 2 + Karolyi = lifelong therapy :scream: there's just too much ego to please and I feel so so bad for her. She'll go down as the biggest ouch of Marta's reign IMO. :(

I hope Maggie has the meet of her life today, and it would be nice to see the Brits win a medal! (I'm over China)

I'm stressed by it. To the point that I feel uncomfortable watching TF. You're right, she did the impossible - that was a victory and she should be filled with pride and admiration. Instead, I reckon she is desolate and dejected. There is no need for the public cruelty and sidelining - and there needs to me more voiced condemnation of Marta's methods. They are completely unacceptable!

I'm considering pausing the action so that I can flick through the first two Brit rotations - and re watch if I know that they have gone clean. It's too much stress in the moment. No ?

I remember leaving the house in 96 when Kerri Strug was going to do her 2nd vault. I couldn't handle that shit. Then my sister came outside screaming. And now here I am. It's too much to handle sometimes and I'd recommend using a buddy system of some sort, but the positives that can come from it are worthwhile.

I personally would never have put Brenna on the team in the first place based on her previous competition performances. However, Marta made the decision to put Brenna on the team and she should follow through with treating her as a member of the team throughout the competition. I hope Brenna doesn't let this get to her and that she can focus on what she accomplished during this experience. She got to compete on the world's stage, helped the team to qualify to team finals, and now has move named after her in the Code of Points. I think that is pretty awesome.

I have a strange feeling that the American streak of going through a team final cleanly at Worlds/Olympics is going to end today in a big way. :shuffle:

Last time they made a mistake in the team finals: 2010 Worlds, Mattie Larson on floor.

But of course I wouldn't be surprised if they are clean. Polar opposite opinions, I know.

Looks like cbc.ca is live streaming TF so no VPN needed. :D

I'm so sorry for Brenna. :( She honestly shouldn't make TF but treating her like that is way too much. I can't say I'll be too disappointed if the US gets upset this time, but they're so ahead, it's hard to imagine a meltdown on their current lineup (and I don't want it from Maggie or Madison either).

And agreed on 6-3-3.

Me too. Maybe it's better that I have a final to study for and won't be able to watch :(

Is Vanessa Ferrari competing here? What's going on with her? I just saw the Italian team, but I don't think that I saw her.

Awesome set from Becky! Missed the connection of Downie-pak but hit set, just some .1-.3 short handstands. Should be about a 15 and they needed that big time - overall this was better from them than prelims. 14.833
