Gymnastics News #15

Shang's someone who will be kicking herself over not making BB EF. :( But her FX was nailed about as well as she could so :cheer:

Shang Chunsong was scored way too high IMO, she should've been behind Ellie. I prefer her UB/BB by solar systems. Great podium :swoon:

Hoping Manrique hits big on HB. There's no way that kid shouldn't go to the Olympics.

The highlight for me of this worlds is going to be Sanne Wevers walking away with a beam silver medal. I've ben a fan of hers for many years since I saw her do a triple turn on beam. It seemed like a pipe dream to even have her make a final and now she has a medal!

Love the introductions

Here's for Manrique finally qualifying for the Olympics.

Love the introductions

I love the introductions too. Glasgow really made the introductions seem special and interesting. Not have the judges on the floor seemed weird to me and I'm curious how that's played out with the scoring.

OMG that fall from Brooks - :yikes:

So - does Brooks have a shot of making the Rio? Or will USAGym go with Whittenburg as their 3rd AAer? I'm assuming the other AAers will be Mikulak and Leyva.

Well, I guess every sport has a coach like Danell's stepdad. Although there really isn't a figure skating equivalent.

Who else does Yin coach that is promising? Danell can't be it, right?

Okay, it was kinda funny seeing them both watch Uchi. Shades of Brian Orser.

The reason Komova doesn't get the benefit of the doubt (from me at least) is because she's a quitter with a bad attitude. 2011 Worlds she wasn't exactly a paragon of consistency although IMO she should have won but her AA beam was a wobblefest and her FX nothing to write home about so it was hard to be too outraged. I was no fan of Weiber's but she fought (key word here) and held on when her bars started to go awry then came back fighting.

2012 we saw what she's all about on that vault. She didn't fight with every fibre of her being to keep it on the mat, the one time it was really important that she did. Had she done that she'd be the AA champion. I do credit her with coming back strongly in that one instance and for pulling out the best FX of her life when she needed it most. But too little too late; she'd already sabotaged herself. After that she pouted and sulked her way through errors in the EF's instead of taking advantage of those wonderful opportunities to win herself an Olympic title.

And then we fast forward to this years TF. That 'fall' on her arabian was an absolute disgrace. She didn't even try. You can see on the slo mo that once she wobbled initially she just lets go of her core and literally jumps off. Contrast that with Biles' amazing save in AA (or going back to Nastia in 2006 with that amazing handstand exit from her acro series :respec:). Those girls gave a shit. Komova just doesn't.

This is where her attitude really showed its true colours. Instead of looking in the mirror and acknowledging that she didn't do her job, she blamed everyone else and this time it's bitten her in the ass. It's so obvious that she believes, because she has the best form, she should win despite the errors; that her E-score should somehow be enough to make up for it. Basically that it all be handed to her on a plate. No fight required. That is what is wrong with Komova. As a fan of gymnastics, I'd like nothing better than to see her on top of the podium. When it works her gymnastics is glorious!! Like yesterday - of course she should have won the gold outright in the UB final. But after all that's gone before it's hard to be that bothered for her really. Girl needs a complete attitude U-turn. If she's able to realise that she still has to fight for it, despite all the natural gifts she has, and show some respect for the girls who have only a fraction of her talent but work infinitely harder and have a drive for success she could only dream of at this point; well then she might have a chance.

All this is JMO obviously ;)

Well, it's my opinion too. Late to the party, but I agree with your post word for word. Komova makes me so mad, I adore her gymnastics, but her lack of fight and nasty attitude makes it hard for me to feel for her when she doesn't win.

Have there been any updates on Steingruber and Landuyt's respective injuries? I hope that they are ok and nothing serious.

And as soon as I say that, they're interviewing her on the live feed, but she's speaking German, I think, and I can't understand a word! Lol

I take it back....French....she's said Merci....the only word I understood and I took 3 years of it in high school...lol

I missed the livestream interview, but a Twitter search turned up a Swiss article saying they didn't know the exact nature of the knee injury but the ligaments didn't appear seriously damaged. If so that's great news for her, it's a bummer she lost her chance on FX after missing out in AA.

So late to the party, but have just watched the womens vault and UB finals, and both results have confused and upset me  :wuzrobbed:drama:

In an age of instantly available information, FIG has really shot itself in the foot with the way they publish scores.

Sae apparently counted three B dance elements, so despite exceeding Simone on tumbling, she was spotting her .5 in the D score. But if you didn't know this, you would think she had been lowballed.

Here are the finalists ranked by D score:

1-Biles 6.8
2t-Shang 6.4
2t-Afan
4 - Sae 6.3
5t - Maggie 6.2
5t - Claudia
7 - Ellie 6.0
8 - Lieke 5.4

Here are the finalists ranked by E score:

1 - Biles 9.0
2 - Nichols 8.8
3 - Ellie 8.733
4t - Afan 8.7
4t - Lieke
6 - Sae 8.633
7 - Shang 8.533
8 - Claudia 8.366

Yes Americans always get the benefit of doubt in two places- womens gymnastics and womens singles figure skating.

How do you explain Kocian (8.766) getting a higher E score than Douglas (8.733) in the UB final?
