I found a cliff notes clip version of some of the problematic things Skinner said.

“A lot of the girls don’t work as hard.”

Um, does she not understand how easy and understandable it would have been for Suni to quit? She was very sick. She easily could’ve just trained well enough to only get back on the Gold Over America tour. 😒

Also, it’s pretty disrespectful to fumble around with saying names. From personal experience, the kind of people who would say, “Is it HAZ-ley or HEZ-ley?”, also don’t care enough to get my name right - and my name is one of the most Anglo names out there.

I may not have shared this correctly, but this is a really nice article about Simone Biles’ choreographer. He’s built a career as a gymnastics choreographer after his ballet career.

He says gymnasts need to start dance training early. Oh yeah. At trials a variety of successful dance styles were on display, but way too many gymnasts fall out of those athletic pirouettes.

There is room for Lee’s lyricism, Chiles’s pop choreography, Simone Roses’s spooky choreo, and Biles’ pure athletics. I enjoyed the floor routines there more than I have in a long time.

The US had high difficulty and terrible choreo on floor for too long. The current code has done wonders for improving the US game in this area. Even Jade now has respectible choreo, even if her execution remains a work in progress.

Putting aside Hezly's inexperience, Simone has spoken before about how stressed she can get and how she would worry about what people on Twitter were saying. So, I don't see how looking at and responding to negative and controversial things said about her or her teammates is beneficial, especially if it is just going to end up give more attention to the critics.

With Suni's coach saying that Suni hasn't been feeling that confident, it's probably not the best thing for her to be paying attention to this stuff, either.

And there are seasoned athletes and celebrities who spend more time than is healthy for them looking at what is said about them online. Being in your twenties doesn't make a person immune from expectations, pressure, and criticism. IMO, there are more productive and happier things for an athlete to do the month the Olympics are starting. JMO.
 
I don’t know. I think with the backlash to Skinner's comments that it’s good that Simone knows what was said and she made a brief comment. Perhaps she can help Suni focus beyond Skinner's comments. Unfortunately, they are now out there but at least they’re being condemned. Rather the gymnasts know now what the comments are than be blindsided later.

I hope one day she can get to a place where she realizes that it's not normal or good to have a panic attack at the mere sight of someone.

Also I saw a few of her YT videos and one of them was her and Jonas discussing "traditional gender roles." Jonas said he doesn't really believe in them and would be fine if a woman worked and he stayed more at home, while she looked horrified and said that she'd always been taught that women stay home and men work. He looked discouraged at her being so rigid.

She just seems so sheltered and shallow. Like there's just not a there there.

Skinner is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. (AKA Mormons) It's a religion that tends to strickly enforce traditional gender roles and some members tend to really ostracize those who stray from what they believe concerning the role of a woman.

I used to know quite a few girls and women who were members but my failure to marry and produce a brood of children meant that we grew apart. (We won't even get into their views on my volunteering with the Girl Scouts which was basically a radical organization while the Boy Scouts were perfect. And this was during the "abuse scandal" ) A young woman I work with feels like a total failure because at 30 she's not married even though she has a great job and a great life. But once a week she gets beat down for her "failure" :(

Anyway, if that's the culture you are brought up in, then she probably could not understand what Jonas was saying. She's been brought up to think it's her job to produce children and have dinner on the table.

Yeah, and I understand you have personal insight into their lives. I don’t disagree but the post I was responding to had a tone that made it seem like these grown ass women don’t know what they’re doing.
 
I hope everyone can move on from this. I’ve seen a lot of Clickbait type posts appearing on my social media feeds and it’s really quite comical.

She got in trouble for talking twice. The first time was for the comments she made about the team. The second time was when she claimed that the comments about work ethic were about the gymnasts at her gym rather than the gymnasts who made the Olympic team, when that pretty clearly wasn't true. Now, she's trying to dig herself out. I hope for her own sake that, even if she didn't write this last comment herself, she is actually really thinking about it, especially since she is a mother. I hope she is not coaching.
 
Media organizations engage in outrage-mongoring, and NBC is no exception. They have been actively doing this since Turin, and they use racial tensions to drive engagement. Remember how they treated Shani Davis?

It wouldn't surprise me if she was NBC's agitator this time around. Will be interesting to see if she tries to stir up the dormant Simone-is-a-quitter types who are still out there. Ugh.
