Gymnastics #24 - The Road to Paris

Good thoughts, @Karen-W. Also, the U.S. starts on beam and I think Carey may be the better gymnast to go first at the Olympics.
Yeah, I was thinking about that too and hadn't had time to look it up to refresh my memory. I do think Jade may be the better gymnast to get things off to a solid, steady start. I might even suggest swapping Simone and Hezly in start order. Yes, Simone scores much higher but I feel like Hezly would probably be more settled and confident if she was sandwiched between Simone & Suni for their first event.

Thoughts on lineups:

Prelims
VT Lee, Chiles, Carey, Biles
UB Rivera, Chiles, Biles, Lee
BB Carey, Rivera, Biles, Lee
FX Lee, Chiles, Carey, Biles

Remove first listed athlete for team finals.
I think they’ll let Chiles do beam instead of Jade so she can do AA qualifying

I hope Simone stays off Twitter until after the Olympics. I get randos on the internet saying whatever would get annoying after a while, but she seems super set off by rather innocuous comments or even the mildest criticism and then can’t stop herself from clapping back. I think it’s a bit of a bad look for her at times, but further more for her own sanity it just seems like she’d be better off not reading any of it. I’m not talking about the stuff about her husband, which like, yes girl, go off on that. But if someone says they don’t like your music, it’s probably best to just let that one slide?

I can’t imagine being in her shoes, and how that fish bowl must feel, but I would be staying the heck away from all of it if I were her.

re the discussion on makeup, I thought all the gymnasts looked great last night. I love a little dramatic lip and there were several good red lip looks last night.

The leos on the other hand… :scream:. The one with the red bottom was slightly better, but both of them were completely overdone. Straps on the back, dip dyed sleeves, little stars on the fabric, blues that don’t match. Oof to all of it. Hoping the actual Olympic leos are better, but do not have high hopes. This same overdone, fussy quality has been a bit of a theme for this quad for the US. Now that they have sponsors again, I was hoping they could pay for a better designer.

When they aren’t having to go all patriotic (non-Olympic years) they get prettier ones. The red bottomed one worked but the other had five ideas when one or two would have been enough.

Both leos were hideous. They looked like circus tents. The striping was distracting. The straps that went from ribs to ribs across the back accentuated the gymnasts’ width. The red piping against the blue mesh was awful.

I could be mis-remembering, but I thought I heard one of the commentators say during at least one of the NCAA championship phases that Carey was put in the "first on" position in the beam as her college team leader, and it's a place she now feels confident in.

See, now I preferred the other one - I thought the illusion and split on the front with the red band was super-interesting, and I loved the vertical stripes on the torso. The one with the red lower half... I was rewatching Hezly's beam routine and that is some SHINY, metallic fabric, lol. YMMV.

I think Simone is like a lot of great athletes (like Michael Jordan, Kobe, Tom Brady, Djokovic) in that she's quick to take offense to slights and it fuels and motivates her. She definitely has a tetchy personality, but it's typical of these GOAT athletes.

What is the order for the alternates, or will it depend on who get injured (i.e., they re-run their scoring matrix)?

There's no ranking for the alternates. If someone has to be replaced it will depend on who it is that's out and probably how each of the alternates are training. That being said, I think Roberson would add the most value in most, if not all, possible scenarios.

But, even tough cookies can crumble. :( I kind of wish that all the alternates were traveling alternates. There have been way too many injuries and illnesses.
Gymcastic keeps reminding us about 2003 when they had to fly in alternates and that’s the way Chellsie Memmel won AA Worlds.

Memmel won 2005 worlds AA. But she was brought in as a replacement for the team at 2003 worlds and helped the team considerably on the way to the team gold. She did compete in the AA in 2003 but finished 8th.

2003 worlds started as a complete fiasco for the USA with several gymnasts going down with injury and illness. They only competed with 5 in the team final IIRC (it was a 6-3-3 format) but rallied and won in the end.

Congratulations to the members of the 2024 U.S. Women's Gymnastics team. A great fight for that 5th spot, and incredible perseverance for the four returning veterans.

I am so sad to see Skye miss out after that great upgrade on vault & her fabulous Nationals and so sorry to see Shilese miss out after reaching her potential last season.

But kudos to the athletes that persevered because it is incredibly difficult to lead for so long, much less to come back after time away from the elite ranks. Simone's comeback last season was incredible. And this season at least three of these veterans faced a serious uphill battle to prove themselves up through this week. Yet they did.

Ah, thanks for the correction about Memmel’s AA win. They only competed with 5 in 2003 and won? Wow.

I need to see Karen’s math… Because how did Asher and Paul end up on the team and not Shane? What computer system crunched these numbers?

Someone needs to approximate it for me

Lol

Not my math. It was explained upthread that they have two data sets they run - 1) average of 3 highest scores from Champs & Trials, 2) average of all 4 scores from Champs & Trials - if the data sets spit out the same exact team that produces the highest score then that's the team, no discretionary discussion. Per NBC that's exactly what happened.

Is scoring in Men’s gymnastics consistently across national and international competition?

Using common average based statistics in this case seem silly in comparison to using rank statistics, but then who knows that they aren’t and the explanation is dumbed down.

Five in the final. Kupets competed the qualifying before pulling out.

The Anaheim Worlds was really quite something despite all those injuries. It was a coming out party for 4/5ths of the U.S. ladies team. One knew, heading in, that there were some highly competitive youngsters in that group; but still, it was something to see them all have their moments.

Also dos Santos's floor routine:swoon:.

*I really liked Ashley Postell and was sad she never had the chance to compete.

The 2005 worlds was also supposedly the place where some major drama between Nastia and Chellsie went down.

Wishing that Shilese and Skye were healthy to compete :(. Jade is very lucky to be on the team.
It is very unfortunate what happened to Shilese, Skye and Kayla. These women did not compete the AA at Trials, so how can you guarantee how they would have performed to take anyone’s spot on the team? In gymnastics, and sports in general, anything can happen. I’m not sure why you chose to single out Jade, but it’s typical as she is the most slighted gymnast on the team. The AA totals between Suni, Jordan, Jade, and Hezly were so close that they were virtually tied. Had Carey not had that rhythm break in her UB set on night 2, she would have finished 2nd behind Simone at Trials.

I love Jordan, but I had her as a traveling replacement athlete before Shilese and Skye were eliminated as options while Jade was on the team. I don’t actually like Jade’s gymnastics but she fit better on a team that included Shilese and Skye than Jordan.

Does anyone know what happened to Nastia Liukin? Was she fired from broadcasting?
Most of these commentators are contractors signed to do the event you see them on so they aren't "fired" they just don't get a contract.

Honestly the "lucky" one is probably Hezly. I don't think she makes it without those three going down. The others.... well the injuries made the selection committee's process somewhat easier IMHO

And I think Memmel was flown directly from another competition a week or so before- Pan Am Games? Then she contributed to Team Gold and tied with Holly Vise for UB gold. I thought she was as much as a lock for 2004 Olympics as Patterson until she got injured.
