Oksana Chusovitina's Olympic Review
Look what popped up in my suggestions feed today? The Olympic channel posted this video on their YouTube channel. This is a video of all of Chuso's olympic performances. It's really remarkable. Some of these routines I have never seen. It really is a gymnastics history lesson. And a geography lesson, too. 🙂

I got all of the feels watching. She has my utmost respect as an athlete and gymnast.

ETA: Her floor routines in 92 and 96 would be competitive now.

ETA: And with the same coach! Unbelievable!!

Thank you!

I do not view her as a particularly artistic gymnast, but she really did the 1992 and 1996 Compulsory Floor routines very well. I also enjoyed her beam compulsories. Overall, she did better in compulsories in 1996 in comparison to 1992.

I think 2008 was really the year she was "on". I respect that she went for the Prudonova in 2016. (She walks past Biles after the 2nd vault in 2016, and, from Bile's face, I wonder if Biles thought Chusovitina could have snagged the vault gold.)

Has she ever done a Yurchenko entry on vault in a recorded competition?

The small team size at the 2020 Olympics is ridiculous, and it mutes the need for depth that Laurie could provide, if her skills and fitness are back.
Assuming Jade gets the +1 through the challengers and this year’s worlds team stays healthy, it’s a bars and beam game. Laurie killed those events as a junior, but that was a looooong time ago.

I am guessing her comeback might go more the way of Shawn/Nastia's than Aly/Gabby's because she didn't start in earnest last year.

On the upside, Laurie does look like she turned a corner in her fitness ...

She had a tummy here:

but much less here:

... Although she has some curves now that will never go away. However, it looks like she adapted.

"On July 27, 2015, USA Gymnastics dispatched its future superstar, Simone Biles, on a round of promotional appearances in the federation’s hometown of Indianapolis. It was part of a hectic marketing tour into which then-chief executive Steve Penny also squeezed an appearance by Biles at a party for his daughter’s gymnastics group the night before.
That same day, Penny did something he did not tell Biles or her family about. He had USA Gymnastics contact the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Indianapolis to report concerns that the national team’s longtime physician, Larry Nassar, had sexually abused gymnasts under the guise of treatment.
Penny knew Biles was among the first trio of athletes who had been flagged to USA Gymnastics as being uncomfortable with Nassar. But Penny had left Biles out of a secret, five-week internal investigation of her doctor, and when he met with the FBI, he specifically didn’t mention her name. USA Gymnastics instead referred the FBI to other U.S. team members, including Aly Raisman, for an investigation into Nassar that eventually stalled.
...
In August 2016, Biles returned from the Olympic Games in Rio with four gold medals and a bronze, and personal sponsors like Nike and Hershey. The FBI also began ramping up its dormant investigation again. In Colorado Springs, ahead of a post-Olympic tour by the gymnasts, Penny says he met with the participants and informed them of the Nassar investigation.
It was then that Biles was finally interviewed by the FBI; it was also when she started to realize she had been abused repeatedly by Nassar under the guise of medical treatment, according to a person familiar with the situation.
...
Four months after the tweet (that Biles made when Nassar was sentenced), when documents Faehn had turned over to the U.S. Senate were made public, Biles found out that some people at USA Gymnastics had known since the beginning about her concerns about Nassar.

The article is much longer. Penny really, really ought to be facing jail time.

She shows she's having fun in the end.

If Carey is getting the non team specialist spot wouldn't Skinner now make the team as the 2nd vault and floor worker who can also do the all around well? I would like to see that for her. I feel for her she continues to be the odd person out as her strengths are not needed on the team. In 2016 she was not needed since the team already had Biles and Raisman for vaulting. If Raisman had not made her comeback she would have fit on the team perfectly doing vault, beam, and floor probably.

Unfortunately, the US is too rich in floor and vault already. They need bars and beam to give them the most options.

I think so. Skinner’s max and likely scores aren’t significantly higher than those of the last world team. Now, if she cleaned up her form, it might be a different story.

Yeah I guess if the All Arounders like Lee, Hurd, Grace, Wong are scoring close to the same on vault and floor there really is no point to take her then even as the 2nd vault/floor worker who is a good AAer. I don't mention Eaker since I assume she is the one who would never do vault and floor in team finals no matter the team, if she makes the team.

I'm not mad about that.

I am not either. Her gymnastics is kind of an eyesore. I just would feel bad for her as she seems to wind up in that position often. It is strange for such a talented gymnast to make only 1 world or Olympic team. And she has a lot of determination and has worked really hard on this comeback, and she was perhaps the most controversial one left off in 2016.

Then again would be easier to feel for her if she were a nicer person.
