This Is Likely Simone’s Last World Championships
This article gives a partial explanation as to what would motivate an athlete like Simone. She has every right to be pissed. The federation isn’t giving her credit for raising the bar and awarding the values her difficulty deserves, forcing gymnasts to raise their skill level. They are discouraging it, snubbing her, which is disgraceful. They are using athlete safety as an excuse. I think it is a way to give the rest of the field a chance to catch up to Simone. But it’s a crappy way to do it.

Sam Mikulak is 15th at the moment if we exclude those gymnast that can't qualify because of the 2 per country rule.

But kind of sad/expected after watching his score, he bombed floor exercise an event that is usually one of his strongest with a 11.533 followed by a 12.600 in pommel horse

Overall he left like 3 points on the table because of those 2 performances, specially floor.

Coming into finals he will have the opportunity of a potential total score IF he doesn't fall elsewhere of 85 points that can put him in contention for a top 5 but not enough for a medal.

Yul Moldauer leads the americans in the AA currently 7th overall.

Japan has finished qualifying, finishing behind Russia by 1.9 points. The USA finished their qualifying, currently in 3rd spot, barely ahead of Chinese Taipei. The USA is more than 9.5 points behind Russia. Sam Mikulak is 14th place in AA (13rd after 2 per country). Sam is likely to make HB finals.

When I saw this, I thought Sam was the highest U.S. AA. Thank goodness Yul did a little better.

Oleg Vernaliev is out of the PB finals, Max Whitlock takes the lead in the PH.

ETA: Both Ukraine and GBR easily pass the USA, these 3 teams along Chinese Taipei, Korea and Brazil have qualified for the Olympics. Sam Mikulak is 24th in the AA (22nd after 2 per country is applied), he is very likely to miss the AA finals.

He is very good, but nearly not as good as the Chinese, Russians and Japanese. Athletes from these countries have no weak events. There is a lot of hype from the US media because he is the best among the US athletes, but sometimes that lack substance.

Epke Zonderland failed to qualify, Dutch had a nightmare session. Switzerland moved ahead of US to qualify, Spain and Germany qualify a full team. Epke will need to use the event world cup to qualify, he leads the standing so far.

Russia leads the team standing ahead of China and Japan. Nagorny (Rus) leads Dalaloyan(RUS) and Ruoteng (CHN).

In the Rings, as many as 5 athletes are in contention for the 3 the event specialist qualifying spots, they may all qualify after reallocation of the event spots in the other individual events.

Russians scoring below Qualifications.
China marginally below as well.
First big mistake comes from France a 12.1, a good 2 points below qualifications.
Anne-Marie also has a disaster on beam, a 12. Canadians are counting two 12s on beam.

Grace McCallum (USA) scores 12.966 on the UB, Simone 14.6. 14.733 for lee, so many late turns, bit lucky.
Akhimova (Rus) 12.533 on beam, 13.7 for Melnikova-looked solid
Italians again with 3 solid vaults. If they can stay on the beam, they can medal.
France really trying hard not to win a medal, two 12s on beam.
China's Liu TingTing makes a huge mistake on UB, she was messy to begin and will count a fall as well, A 11.9 for Liu.
Canada's Black does well, but those leaps look really ugly, I wonder what the Robo judges ( though about those leaps.

Boyer scores 13.8, a saviour for the french.

Silver and Bronze medal is up for taking. French had 3 big problems, China 1, Russia is counting a 12 on beam.
Russian (Scheldenikova(?)) fall off the beam now. It is a splash fest. Russia misses mama Mustafina.

Eaker 14.0 on beam, missed the start for her routine, she looked from what I saw.
14.266 for Italy huge
Boyer 13,266 on Floor
Chinese (Chen) athletes stay on the beam, looked good to me. they rely a lot on beam score. A 14 after a long wait.
Akhimova survives floor, she is awkward, to say the least. 13.600 for Akhimova.
14.133 for Italy, wow they may medal even if they bomb beam.

Lee falls on beam as well (USA)...Did I already mention this was a splash fest? Lee scores a 12.533.
Elisa was nervous but scores 13.9, but another solid score.

Aline of France score 13.3, didn't see the performance.
Fall from Chinese athlete on beam as well, this will hurt more. Liu with 12.333.
Melka scores 13.9, BBC though that was not worth showing. I may agree once I see her perform.
Simone does well, small wobbles. However, she showed everyone how it is done. A 14.433 on beam.

Melanie scores 14.166, a solid enough performance.

A few questions about qualifying for Tokyo:

Injured gymnasts whose NOC didn't qualify a team (like Rebeca Andrade or Larisa Iordache) can only qualify through the World Cups or Continental Championships?

Larisa Iordache or Ioana Crisan could earn a spot through World Cup or Continental Championships, but both cannot since Maria Holbura received a nominative spot already at WC2019?

Could someone like Leanne Wong, who did not help qualify the US full team, win an AA spot through the World Cups or Continental Championships? (Assuming Tom Forster would let her try). Or not because US already has a team?

Assuming no extra AA spot, could Jade Carey win the VT/FX World Cup spots and could Mykayla Skinner win a spot in the same 2 events at Pan Ams? Or is Pan Ams just for AA?

Will someone who qualified as an event specialist get to do the All Around in qualifying or will he/she only do the specialty apparatus? For example, will Marian Dragulescu go to Tokyo to do only a split second vault?

Is there a waiting list so if a nominative spot holder is injured, the next on the list can go?
