A few questions about qualifying for Tokyo:

Injured gymnasts whose NOC didn't qualify a team (like Rebeca Andrade or Larisa Iordache) can only qualify through the World Cups or Continental Championships?
Yes, Continental championships for one of two AA spots, and the individual event world cups. Remember half the world cups are over, so they will have to compete in the 3 out of 4 events to qualify. The next one is this year in November, if they are not ready for that they will have to compete for the remaining three world cups. Rebecca Andrade had gold medals in vault, beam and UB from Cottbus 2018 and Jade Barbosa has floor. If Jade wins Floor 2 more times that could also be a problem for Andrade ( 1 spot per NOC). The AA world cup is off-limit as it is available for the top 12 teams.

Larisa Iordache or Ioana Crisan could earn a spot through World Cup or Continental Championships, but both cannot since Maria Holbura received a nominative spot already at WC2019?
There are no restrictions on this listed, FIG is allowing 3 athletes to qualify via apparatus finals and 1 via AA, why would a named athlete be a problem. Maria can't win another spot for Romania, but Larissa can qualify maintaining 1 spot for NOC at the event at each criteria (Continental route or the World cup route)
Could someone like Leanne Wong, who did not help qualify the US full team, win an AA spot through the World Cups or Continental Championships? (Assuming Tom Forster would let her try). Or not because US already has a team?
World cup AA spot is nominated to the NOC and Simone can compete and help the spot according to wordings. In fact, different athletes can compete and score the points at different WC. If the US gets the world cup AA spot, they can't get the continental spot. If the US is competing as a team, NOC gets the spots, or else the athlete.

Assuming no extra AA spot, could Jade Carey win the VT/FX World Cup spots and could Mykayla Skinner win a spot in the same 2 events at Pan Ams? Or is Pan Ams just for AA?
PAN AMs or continental champs is for AA.Jade will only get VT or FX spot and not both, this spot is not transferable to other athletes in the team. If Jade is part of the US team, the no.2 gets the spot.

Will someone who qualified as an event specialist get to do the All Around in qualifying or will he/she only do the specialty apparatus? For example, will Marian Dragulescu go to Tokyo to do only a split second vault?
They traditionally have, I am not sure they will stop Jade Carey from only competing VT for taking up VT spot, and not FX.

Is there a waiting list so if a nominative spot holder is injured, the next on the list can go?

I am still so confused!
Yes, with FIG. They will reallocate the spot based on this document.

It is confusing, especially reallocation of spots, the Wiki qualification page has been updated by someone to allocate only 3 individual rings spot and won't gain other spots from other apparatus finals. They have allocated 2 spots, which I believe should go the rings event specialist for reaching the finals to the reallocated AA spots. I will wait for the FIG to announce the details.

Musty didn't compete the Russia cup, hence she was not allowed to compete at the worlds, I guess a new rule by Russian gymnastics ;). She has said herself that she is preparing for the Tokyo games.

Barbosa tore her ACL so I don’t see her competing in the World Cup events.

It will be tough even for Andrade who is only 3 or 4 months out from her own torn ACL. Cottbus is only six weeks away so that’s out of the question. The remaining events in 2020 might be doable although I think getting vault back by then would be tough. Last time Andrade tore her ACL at worlds in Montreal, she took about a year to get her DTY back and more to get her second vault back. Beam and bars might be more of a possibility, especially since I feel like the beam spot is still up for grabs.

Jade is on track to win enough World cups to assure her to be entered for vault and floor. I haven’t heard that an athlete can’t be entered for more than one apparatus.

No other athlete can get the AA spot if their team has qualified for Toyko as far as I know. Does someone know for sure?

There is a maximum of one World Cup spot per NOC. Jade (Carey to be clear since we are also taking about Jade Barbosa in this thread) will more likely get the vault spot than the floor spot. But once an athlete qualifies, they can compete all the events in Tokyo.

I don’t understand what you are asking here.

Do they always mix the teams going on each apparatus within a rotation now? I’m watching the women’s final and for example on vault it’s going 1 American gymnast, 1 Chinese gymnast, back to the Americans... and so on. I think I prefer it when an entire team goes and then they switch out... it feels weird seeing it this way lol.

Ah thanks on the first question. On the second one, someone upthread asked if Leanne Wong could qualify separately for the AA as a named athlete. I think this spot is restricted to athletes from countries who don’t have a team qualified.

I am super confused.

If Jade Carey qualifies based on the vault spot, she is entitled to compete all the events (bars, beam, vault, floor, AA) in Tokyo? Or she is able to compete all of those, if the US team allows her to do so? Does the US have the choice to only put her up on the event where she earned the qualification? Does that then knock some other US athlete out of competing in Tokyo?

This makes figure skating nominations look positively simple.

Separate question: Why does Skinner get a world championship gold medal as a non-competing alternate?

Thoughts: So happy for Team Italy....in addition to Simone I really enjoy Sunisa Lee especially on bars and floor. I hate that so few get to go to the Olympics.

If Carey qualifies as an individual, yes she is entitled to compete all four events in Tokyo. But she will be competing them as an individual, not as part of the team of four in the team competition. Her scores won’t count for the team, only for herself.

The team competition will be with four member teams, and each athlete will compete all four events in prelims (four up, three count for team total). So there won’t be any “who gets to do AA in qualifications” issues as in past years.

Then in team finals it will be three up, three count.

And yes the alternate gets a medal in the team competition at world championships. It’s been like that for a while. (For example Alicia Sacramone got a team medal in 2011 even though she had torn her Achilles in training and couldn’t compete.)

@semillon27 actually I think in 2011 the alternates did not get official medals. Wasn’t there a whole big thing about how Sacramone was kept on the team (even though she got injured and was already home by the time the team competed) so she could get a medal. The alternate, Anna Li, was never officially named to the team, though she accepted the medal on Alicia’s behalf on the podium. I seem to remember she had to give that medal to Alicia later, but usag made her a replica medal afterwards. I think giving the alternates a medal at the competition is newer than 2011.

I think it’s great gesture for the ones who are in the tough spot as alternates, but does seem a little strange to me to see the coach and alternates getting medals too.

Alternates and coaches getting medals is not very consistent historically. In 1979 the coaches got a team medal, and I also recall this in 1994. And in 1991 alternates got medals (there are photos of the USSR winning teams with their alternates on the podium, and there was a controversy when the USA did not let their alternate on the podium). I don't recall other years however.

I will miss most of the competition but Japan and China looks stronger for the gold now. Russia have lost few tenth and Japan and China have not made the mistakes they had in qualifications. USA and GBR keeping close as well after 3 rotation. Only 2.4 points seperate Japan and USa in 5th spot.

US look a lot better than quals. Still not at the level of Russia, China or japan, but no major suckage. Of course they get the pommel and rings to finish due to the poor qual score, so there’s still plenty of opportunity to drop. 13.9 helps.

Russia, China, Japan is the final order. I’m on a tablet, so can’t easily post the scores.

Solid 4th for the US, less than 4 points off the podium due almost exactly to the differences behind Japan on pommel and rings.

This is Russia's first world title ever, a first gold medal at world or Olympics since 1996 Olympics. Well down, huge kudos to Nagorny, he truly has a become a AA athlete.

So sad for Sam, that PB routine should be in the event final.
I have more sympathy for the likes of Nagorny who missed out on PB finals since they went so early in the qualification.

Final Result

1) Russia 261.726
2) CHN 260.729
3) Japan 258.159
4) USA 254.578
5) GBR 251.611
6) TPE 248.243
7) SUI 247.038
8) UKR 246.593

You're right - I remembered that incorrectly.

I wonder if Liu Tingting is being pulled from the AA final due to injury. That would explain her struggles yesterday. She's still qualified to the bars and beam finals - if they pull her there too, Tang Xijing would go in to the bars final and Chen Yile would get in to the beam final.

Google translate of this article says she withdrew because of a "poor state and mood" :( It does say she is still in the bars and beam final for now.

No, they don't. I think one of the most memorable moments for me was at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta when Kerri Strug had the guts to do that second vault even though she had hurt her ankle after the landing in her first vault. Thanks to her, they won the Team event. She was one brave young lady.

Kerri Strug Inspiration From Atlanta Olympics 1996
it had the opposite reaction for me watching that, i found it rather disturbing to put a young injured girl up to vault.
