I think IOC/FIG would give Chuso that wildcard invitation spot, the lady deserves one last chance at the Olympics

Though with her you never know when will it be that 'last' olympics!

Unfortunately the “wildcard” spot can’t go to just anyone. It’s not really a wildcard spot. The spot is for underrepresented countries at the Olympics, selected by the tripartite commission and has to be chosen from countries who sent eight or fewer athletes to the previous two Olympics. Uzbekistan definitely had more than eight athletes in 2016, so Chuso wouldn’t be eligible.

I’m going to keep holding out hope she will get in with her AA score until tomorrow’s competition is over though!

WAIT. I thought after this Worlds, there are still individual spots to be earned at the various continental championships in 2020. Couldn’t a Romanian (Europe) or Chuso (Asia) qualify for a spot there?

My understanding is that the continental berths are maximum of two athletes by AA rank, and cannot be earned by a gymnast already qualified, or helped their team qualify. There's no way Chusovitina is going to be able to be top two in Asia, and it's unlikely any of the Romanians could either.

I don't know nowadays but back in 2008 Mexico got an invitation (wildcard) for Belem Guerrero, she was olympic silver medalist in Athens 2004 and because of some confussion/burocracy by our cycling federation she missed the olympic qualification process on paper, Mexican olympic comitee did their part and got that invitation for Belem. (in vane 'cause In the end she declined the invitation)

So I think Chuso can still get to Tokyo 2020 or I want to believe somehow she will be there competing

Team Japan just had less than stellar flood routines, by that I mean they have 10th best with USA, Russia and Brazil to compete.

ETA: Japan finishes 0.010 behind Belgium, no team final for them and if Switzerland and Brazil do well, they won't qualify for the Olympics. Japan finished 6th at the last world championships, currently, they are 9th in the qualifiers with USA, Russia, Brazil and Switzerland to compete; Hungary and Argentina are expected to not beat Japan.

Russia competing now, they are expected to be a complete train wreck here. However, they have qualified a full team from last world championships, so the pressure is slightly off.

I agree about Chuso but maybe I’m crazy but I don’t think it’s impossible for Romania to get a spot at Euros. The first spot will almost certainly go to Russia, as they can send their new seniors to try to earn it. But the second spot seems like anyone’s game. I’m trying to think of top AAers on teams who weren’t at Worlds and the only ones who immediately comes to mind are Amelie Morgan, Kelly Simm, a healthy Axelle Klinckaert and I feel like Golgota on a good day would be competitive with them. Romania’s new seniors born in 2004 are also among the best after Russia. I think Bachynska from Ukraine and Perez from Spain would hopefully be competitive for this spot too. I’m probably missing someone really obvious?

Mustafina can't help Russia gain the spot since she helped them qualify the full team at the last world championships, so she is out of the question. Mustafina, if she chose can obtain a spot for the NOC through the AA world cup series held next year (criteria 6). However, the continental AA spot (criteria 7) is not available to the athletes who helped Qualify through Criteria 1( 2018 WC) or Criteria 2 (2019 WC route - 9 teams).

This isn’t a sarcastic question but why is this qualifying teams/spots system so complicated? What is the rationale underlying it/the goal they are hoping to accomplish?
I see the whole thing as an attempt to handicap feds with really deep teams, aka the US. The shift to 4 athletes and ruling that if you qualified here you can't compete there are targeted at any deep team.

Ummm, no. It was to make qualification for event specialists bit fairer. Event specialists only had one opportunity to qualify at the world championships, if they bombed at WCs they failed to qualify, by having them qualify through world cups have more than one opportunity. IOC was never going to give new quota spots for the Artistic Gymnastics, so they had to come up a formula like this. I hate the system, but your argument is false since the US WAG can qualify 6 athletes instead of 5. The focus of the change was due to the possibility of a good event specialist, especially in Men's event missing the Olympics.

I think they keep trying to fix something that went wrong the last Olympics. And screwing it up. Next Olympics they are going back to 5 member teams and no more plus one though.

With one subdivision left, Chuso’s hopes are still alive. She is 29th, there should be 31 AA spots, as only 2 AA qualifiers means 10 extra AA spots and Japan’s host spot goes back into the pool. This subdivision just has individuals from three countries - Finland, New Zealand, and Singapore, so as long as she can stay ahead of one, she should be in.

Was Marta against wearing blue or something? Seems like the USA girls have worn more blue in the last 3 years then they did in the entirety of the Marta years. These light blue leos are very pretty.

I tried to rally and watch the first 2 sessions, but it was too early and I fell asleep. I woke up just in time for the start of the Americans and Brazilians. And British commentary. My day has been made.

Is there a way to watch the streamed events on replay? I've been looking on the NBC web site and can find the "live" stuff, but have not had luck finding replays. (I'm tech challenged!) Thanks if anyone knows or has links!

On thé home page of NBCSports.com, left side of page you’ll see Watch Now View Full Schedule.
Click on that and the next page has tags for Full Event Replays. Click on that and they’ll load. Scroll down and you’ll find replays of some sessions. Hope that helps.

The Olympic qualification considers those who win a medal or finish in the top 3 of the apparatus finals, excluding those that are from a country already qualified as a team.

This means that only 3 countries are in contention: Mexico & Korea in the Vault, but it looks they only need to finish top 5 to get those realocation spots for the Olympics. And in the case of Brazil Saraiva needs the same, to finish inside top 4-5 so she can get that olympic spot and go to Tokyo as the lonely brazilian female gymnast.
