Great skaters who never made a world team

Can't think of many in Canada outside of Tanya Bingert. There are other names that have been mentioned (e.g. Denommee) but Bingert's short in 1994 nationals would have made world top 10 for sure. Hard to ignore one of the biggest 3Z in the world at the time. So to me she would have unlike others been successful at world's and not just making it.

Nothing much coming to me from outside of Canada except US ladies where there have been a ton. Too bad we lost Cindy Bortz after winning junior world's in 1987. Liang, Anne-Patrice, there are tons already mentioned. My shoutout goes to Jessica Mills. Would have loved to see what this program would have scored had she gone clean. I remember loving it at the time....and still do!

That lutz is huge! GOE of +3 at least. Watching her SP, I think she had the same coach as Larkyn Austman.

On the list of Americans ladies who never made the world team, I'll add Sydne Voegel.

There was a tall blonde skater from Texas in the early ‘00s. @Louis had a crush on her and I liked her too. I think her best Nats finish was 6th. (First name Lisa?)

Angela Wang never got to Worlds and never will but when she was on she could be lovely. Her SP to Beautiful Storm I saw closeup at Liberty, it was wonderful.

Alexander Uspenski. He was one of the most promising Russian juniors ever back in the days but had tons of bad luck with injuries and was very inconsistent.
Can I like this x 100? I saw him in Finlandia Trophy once, and gosh how good he was. Too sad with the injuries.

Beatrisa Liang got to compete at 2008 Worlds and placed 10th (she was fifth at U.S. Nationals that year; Nagasu 1st, Flatt 2nd and Zhang 4th were all too young): http://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00005324.htm

Ah, thanks. There were a bunch of men I wanted to mention like Carriere, Jahnke and Farris but they all seemed to slide in there once at least. Guess same goes for some of the women too.

Lisa Nesuda, second in juniors in 2000 and eleventh in seniors in 2001. In person she was quite petite - I'm guessing 5'4" - 5'5" at most. From the internet, it looks like she has gone on to a happy life largely outside of skating.

I am pretty sure you are talking about Lisa Nesuda from Dallas? She was 2nd in junior in 2000, but was 11th in what appears to be her only senior national trip in 2001. She was tall and blonde and did really good edge jumps.

Lol we posted the same thing at the same time.

I was going to say Jill Frost. Being from the Northeast, she never got the benefit of USFS politics.

Frost should have gone to Worlds in 1984, but USFS neglected to write the alternates of any of the four disciplines on the entry forms. When Sumners retired and Chin came up injured, Zayak alone competed in Ottawa, winning bronze and securing two U.S. ladies' spots for 1985. If Elaine, too, had retired after Sarajevo, there would have been no U.S. lady at that Worlds, which would have been a tremendous embarrassment.

How do you forget to name the alternates? Yikes!

World Junior Dance 2006 was an amazing year. The first, third, and fourth place teams all eventually became world champions. First and third were Olympic champions.

The second place team never made it to Worlds:
Natalia Mikhailova / Arkadi Sergeev Russia

I believe injury was involved?

Angela Nikodinov. One of my faves.

Was at Worlds for three straight years and would’ve been there in 98 as well had she not gone on a vacation.

ETA- the skater in question is most likely identified earlier in the thread. Nikodinov’s car accident came late in her career and resulted in the death of her mother- that’s probably why she called it quits versus injuries holding her back. She was in the top 10 at Worlds twice.

Angela was even close to medaling at 2001 Worlds after coming in third after the QR and short program right behind Irina Slutskaya and Michelle Kwan and ahead of Sarah Hughes and Maria Butyrskaya.

I ran amok. You are correct.
She lost her mother in a car accident on their way to the 2005 US Nationals. She never competed again. Her hand was injured in the crash in such a way that if she fell and hurt it it would be really bad.

One of my very favorite skates of hers: 2001 US Nats - Sleeping Beauty.

Easy to get mixed up. I almost said Alyssa Czisny, then I remembered she went to Worlds in 2007, 2011 and 2012

Its too bad Nikidnov never got back to Worlds after 2001. I remember she had a recurring should we injury in 2002-03.

She had some shoulder issues. But the nerves and tendons were severely injured in the crash. Her hand was out side the window and pinned by the car that had flipped. Passersby tipped the care upright to free her. However the hand was so sensitive... and if she did a spin the blood left the hand and she could not feel it. It was too dangerous for her to skate even if she wanted to.

I couldn't understand Gao - just couldn't get past a nationals. She hung on for Olympic season - no go. But I saw somewhere that she competed after that as well. Lovely skater.

Morning often than not, it's not that the skater isn't good enough, it's just that there ar a fe others that are just a little bit better

And that was the season she won SA too.

Her Skate America skate wasn't too hot either. She did land four triples with two double axels, and didn't fall though. Her skate there would have probably been better than Jenny Kirk's showing at 2005 Worlds...maybe 12th depending on how her QR went and how generous the judges were with the numbers.
