As the new season starts ....

Yesterday German broadsheet die Welt published an article (link)

Why Germany's best ice dancer changes nation

excerpts:
Our priority was very clear to start for Germany. But after months of discussions, the DEU remained too vague financially, so we have entered into negotiations with the Spanish association for better or worse “, Dieck explained.
The DEU offer would not have covered half of the costs, we would have had to pay for our trips ourselves .... Spain is now paying all the full costs.

DEU President Andreas Wagner describes Dieck's change as a "major loss. We are very sorry that we could not hold him, but financially our hands were tied". Dieck would have wished for more appreciation. "I had classified my standing in the DEU differently. I had to take this step."

Thank you for starting the new season thread, @text_skate! :)
Figure skating national squad 2023/2024
...
Pairs - all PK:

As posted in other threads (Pairs general discussion, U.S. Pairs), Efimova has since been released to the USA to skate with Mitrofanov.

The 23-year-old from Saint Petersburg is the new partner of the Berlin pair skater Minerva Hase. The new couple can therefore represent Germany together at international competitions from the coming season." (May 31, 2023 DEU press release):

Germany received 8 Grand Prix assignments on June 28, 2023:

The DEU published revised team lists on 22 June.

https://www.eislauf-union.de/files/...omepage_BK_REVISED.pdf?jsn_mobilize_preview=1

https://www.eislauf-union.de/files/...mepage_NK2_REVISED.pdf?jsn_mobilize_preview=1

Nikita Voldodin was added, Efimova deleted.

Also added to the NK2 was Nikol Kalugina. She was third at Novice A Nationals last season with a nice clean 3Lz in the free, but she is Ukraininan.

https://skateukraine.org/competitors/nikol_kalugina/results/

When she and fellow Ukrainian Adelina Voroteliak (who was fifth in Novice A) were not on the team initially, I assumed they planned to compete for Ukraine or were still undecided. I guess, Kalugina recently commited to skate for Germany, at least for now.

^^^ Thanks!

...
Junior Pairs: Aliyah ACKERMANN & Tobija HARMS*
Translation of the note at the bottom: *The nomination is subject to proof of performance.

Harms turned 21 in June and was in Canada earlier this summer with Ruben Blommaert for a tryout before the ISU published info about the age exception rule for junior male pair partners earlier this month (Communication No. 2575).

Ackermann/Harms currently are listed in Nachwuchskader 2 (Junior squad 2): https://www.eislauf-union.de/de/nationalmannschaft/bundeskader/nachwuchskader2

I saw on IG earlier this week that Salatzki/Roeseler plan on skating senior this season.

IIRC, they were, along with Ackermann/Harms and the Loewenherz subs, the only German Junior pairs teams last season.

German test skates are happening this weekend. The DEU is posting clips on their IG story.

Really nice twist by Hase/Volodin as well as an interesting lift.

I'm quite excited to see hopefully all 3 senior pairs at Nebelhorn (usually someone withdraws ). Personally I wouldn't be suprised if Hase/Volodin have more potential even rather stort-term than Hocke/Kunkel. Their jumps and elements look strong and IMO Hocke/Kunkel seem to be stagnating a bit.

I also hope Starostin skates at Nebelhorn, he's so entertaining!

Senior ladies is practically non existent without Schott :scream: Maybe they'll let Hannah Keiss skate at Nebelhorn, she trains there after all.

In my book Hase/Volodin look incredibly promising. They have everything! Cannot wait.

She even learned a back outside death spiral. Just remember that this element always was Aljona's superior element. Also Sui/Han saved the Gold in 2022 against the russians via the BoDs who only had lower based spirals.

Current status of figure skating conditions in Chemnitz
From 2007 to 2014, figure skaters Aljona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy won medals at the World Championships and the Olympic Games. They want to build on that. Not as a couple on the ice, but as a coach.

Annika Hocke and Robert Kunkel: “We try to keep the bubble close” (November 7, 2023) by Anna Kellar:
Excerpt re. their current funding situation:
Robert confirmed that the situation is essentially the same. “We’re just here because we made a lot of arrangements, we look where we can earn something or organize something. Our club helps us out, Diamond Ice helps us out by doing funding or donations. We are luckily now invited to some shows…Then we had the Shanghai Trophy, we had the Grand Prix here where we got out with pretty good prize money. I mean after taxes and the federation 10% and all this stuff, it’s not the figure which is on the paper. But we’re safe for the season.”
“For us, it’s always a little sad,” Annika added. “We don’t want to blame [the federation] the whole time and pretend that they are doing nothing. Of course we are trying to make the situation better for ourselves, [and] we are also thinking of us a few years back. We want to make it better for everybody, and everybody’s in the same boat right now. It’s always a little difficult when you get hate back. It’s not like we try to just poke them and anger them [by speaking out], it’s really for a reason, and I hope someday maybe they will realize.”

Hocke/Kunkel´s outing was disappointing this weekend. Like last season they skate worse and worse with every competition.

But still. Getting two German pairs into GPF is very likely. Hase/Volodin only needs to become second in Espoo and Osaka. (I even think they can win both.) Then the Final will be:

Stellato-Dudek/Deschamps
Pereira/Michaud
Ghildardi/Ambrosini
Hase/Volodin
Hocke/Kunkel
Pavlova/Sviatchenko or Conti/Macci
