From Russia with Love [#30]: If There Are Test Skate Videos, It Must Be Fall 2018

I know she is tough. She skated with 8 stitches in her leg couple years ago, but it depends on the type if injury and what the doctor advises.
We all know she is very tough....either last season or season before she was sliced and diced during competition practice. They stitched her up and she carried on with competition.

I remember this incident, it was 2017 Worlds and she got the bronze medal. Now that’s what I call a boss!

Buyanova has no clue about Polina not being musical/her skating being not feminine (WHAT??), but at least they (was it Tarasova?) made a lovely short program for her...

We are please to share Tony's interview with 2015 World Champion and 'The Empress of Figure Skating' Elizaveta Tuktamysheva. She shares the reasons why she think she's been so successful this season, her long-time relationship with Alexei Mishin, why the triple Axel has come back this season, and whether she is planning a second in her free skate. She also shares her favorite things and there is a special contest at the end of the video. Thanks as always for watching Skate Talk Online and please subscribe!

I don't doubt she's tough, she's shown that in the past few years.

Well, you have common sense. Some stupid people were saying she didn’t have the toughness of the other pair girls and I almost vomited.

This was awesome, thank you!

Julia L. was in Megasport during the GP, one of her rare appearances in public lately. She was invited by MatchTV to comment on the events, but for some reason declined.

There's nothing wrong with Shpilevaya & Smirnov finishing 4th at the Alpen Trophy. There were three other high-quality teams there, and as much depth at the top of this event as at Rostelecom so fourth was the most likely outcome. Unfortunately, S&S's score is down from Finlandia. (Partly due to a fall in the FD). And they haven't been selected for Tallinn or Golden Spin so their current SB of 167.94 from Finlandia likely needs to hold up clear through the post season in order for them to finish top 24. Currently, they are listed as 20th. Which will put them 21st once Papadakis & Cizeron skate next week. And we still have Fournier-Beaudry & Sorenson and Chock & Bates as possible high scores if those teams make it to 4CCs/Worlds. S&S are currently the 6th highest Russian team on the SB list, though I think it's likely Ushakova & Nekrasov won't move up to seniors next season. (It is possible that another Russian team or two may win a guaranteed GP spot either via an SB at an upcoming event or via the WS list). Anyway, 167.94 it likely is, and we wait & see where that lands them. I wouldn't think it would be far off the SB list if they miss the top 24, but a strong competition at Nationals would undoubtedly be beneficial.

I miss Fedor so much! (My friend that's fostering the other kitten is now thinking of naming him Fyodor. She can't make up her mind!)

Here are their video from the event RD, so the rest can see at least partially their performance... but i agree with you, and they are on my list of favorites

Me too! He was truly a gift to this sport; I don’t think enough people appreciated him because they were busy looking at Ksenia, but he was one of the best male pair skaters I’ve ever seen. I was watching one of their galas (“Hello” at 2016 Worlds) and I just started crying because I miss them so much. Pairs isn’t the same without them.

Please, name the kitten after him. He deserves it.

Situation, so far, does not look good for Maxim Kovtun. At the previous Cup of Russia, Segment IV, he came in 2nd to Gumenyouk (a junior).

Last night he performed his SP at the Cup of Russia, Segment V, and fell on every jump, currently is 3rd from the bottom in 9th place, with hardly any chances to make the podium. But we'll see what happens in FS..

But…. he has a big long full arm’s length tattoo… that must have taken many hours to make and to heal…

Unfortunately, the part with Tarasova watching Kovtun at this event, was not saved from the live-feed last night…. But one can get an idea… :D (Buyanova is his trainer, but she lets TAT take over).

That guy is so frustrating. It really seems like he's put much more of an effort in to take thinks seriously and train well this season. So that probably is going to be a pretty big setback. When he hits his jumps, they're huge. He definitely lacks in artistry, but there's so much potential. It just may be too little, too late...

That guy is so frustrating.
I know... especially since in the last night's competition, he landed 2-3 quads during warm up... and i thought they were goooood! He and Kolyada both skate great at practices and warm ups, and then.....

Unlike Kovtun, Kolyada does not go on social media and acts like "big shit" and does not post "cute pictures" of himself or spends much time at all to "build image".. Kovtun does, and he looks stupid in the social media, and even more so when he goes out and skates badly.

I don't mind as much when people make a big noise about themselves that has nothing to do with their "occupation", but then if they do, they have to deliver and have results in the actual "subject/profession" they are practicing.

(I am starting to hate "social media channels", because now i evaluate people outside of their true purpose/activity).

Kovtun has always seemed to put more focus on his rapping and tats and hanging out; he may have had some raw talent at one point in time, but I doubt he has the dedication at this point to actually buckle down and do the work required to get to the point he could be at.

I almost felt sorry for him in the KnC. 4 point deduction and his team ripped him a new booty. There were no kisses from anybody.

:D in the live-feed TAT was chewing him out royally after the skate... He was sitting with his head down, hands in the back of the railing, as if they were chained to the galleys... Then TAT steps away, and Buiaynova gets into him, then the assistant coach... Well, if he requires and gets a 3-person entourage made up of 2 top coaches and assistant, to a minor russian series event, at least he could and should skate better.... :p

But.. but.. but.. he is lately such an intellectual.... reading Erich Maria Remarque's "Triumph Arch".... still does not make him "Ravik"... Ravik was a professional, who survived the adversities and death...

I hate the fact that skaters can advertise their lives on social media now... 90% of them look like jerks.

I've had a soft spot in my heart for Kolyada for his off-ice activities ever since I read this article by Tatjana Flade,

As the oldest of four children in his family, Kolyada is used to responsibility. When he still lived at home, he helped take care of his younger siblings.

“I can change diapers, clean up, wash and cook,” he revealed. “I can cook everything except baking cakes.”

From what I've seen on IG, Kovtun seems to have really scaled back his social media presence and *looked* to be focusing more on training. That interview with Buiaynova seems to say that same, right? That he is FINALLY starting to take training more seriously and doesn't have to be pushed into everything. That makes me sad that he had such a great warmup and then a disasterous skate. I really hope he'll push through and do the LP, and not withdraw like he did last year (different event). He seems to need a confidence booster. And TAT is not it.

I just have a soft spot for that guy, i know, I know....

ETA: his IG appears to be deleted for the moment. @Tinami Amori did you place a few phone calls and give him a piece of your mind?:rofl:

The full video with kiss'n'cry is here:

https://youtu.be/38IIGkjuWAA

I have a friend at the competition in Moscow and she said he really did look about to cry. Maybe the presence of TAT made him extra nervous...he was ok at the first event.

Watching that scene reminded me of this famous gif:

http://i4.imageban.ru/out/2015/08/26/1950e98f3f2e6ec830f25a5e58c6eb1f.gif

Didn't TAT buy him all kinds of expensive gifts back in the day? I don't know who got the worse end of the bargain  I've never been a fan of Max, but I wouldn't like to be in his shoes now. I wonder if he will even bother with the FS or suddenly develop "back problems." Buyanova is really striking out this season. (I don't even consider her a coach of Sergei so...)

Aye, not to state the obvious, but those must’ve hurt a lot going on...

I don’t think Kovtun is hanging out on Instagram just to tick you off, but I agree he’s never seemed as dedicated to the sport as he should be if he wants to succeed.

But please, it’s not a sin to use Instagram, as long as you are posting responsibly.

I've had a soft spot in my heart for Kolyada for his off-ice activities ever since I read this article by Tatjana Flade,

Aww that’s so sweet! He will be a great papa someday 😀

I have a soft spot for Kolyada too, he’s a sweetheart and his skating skills are beautiful. If only he could land all those jumps...
