From Russia with Love [#30]: If There Are Test Skate Videos, It Must Be Fall 2018

From what I read, in the USSR (and may be in the current Russia too) they look for talented kids at a very young age, and decide what sport is right for the child. I remember Katia taking Daria to Russia to make an assessment. I think they look for talent rather than looks.

I agree with you though that many of the Russian lady skaters are very beautiful.

I wonder if the selection of skaters was somewhat similar to how they picked dancers at the Kirov. I remember the documentary, "The Children of Theatre Street," narrated by Grace Kelly, and they showed the process of how children were selected to join the school.

"talent is considered worth measuring only when it occurs in the right body" :shuffle::slinkaway

There is this docu. as well, about the selection in the Vaganova Ballet Academy.
"52 Percent" with english subtitles. Very interesting. It was more or less the same procedure in my country as well. Well, at least during my period.

Someone on Quora explains how they choose their students.
Don't know if this is correct, but just bringing here in case anyone is curious about it.

There are five qualities used in the Russian national audition process, which is only Vaganova training. Accepted applicants must have 180 degree/flat turn out (think of a book opening) and easy rotation within the hips and ankles, 2) body proportion w low body weight /predicted appropriate height- (girls no taller than170 cm) 3) flexibity, 4) feet and 5) musicality/rhythm. These five tests are done to a selected group of students who then enter the Russian ballet academies at 10 years old and train for 8 years until 18. The examiners also look at the students parents for general information. The students must meet specific weight goals according to their height each year and are expelled if they deviate. A BMI of under 17 is ideal, which to the western eye appears anorexic, but is a gating item for entrance to the most elite schools and for keeping your spot, since it is very competitive each year to be allowed to move up. Other things, such as the size of one's head (small is good) the length of neck (long preferred) are considered. And the details of ones foot shape after the general assessment (arch, ankle and toes) are also considered. They look at a students bone structure- to jump, a light bone structure is optimal (bird bones) vs a more grounded skeleton such as a wrestler would have. Vaganova students in Russia are chosen from thousands of applicants, so other things- a symmetrical spine, natural balance and an ability to let music move through their muscles is also noted. Last, not least, an attractive face with mobile thateatrical qualities - especially having large- eyes will help.

I suppose he hasn't recovered from injury since he is not going to Nationals. I read somewhere he was out for the season and this was after he w/d from Rostelecom.
Taking the Pitkeev route? Tutberidze is not very lucky with males moving from juniors to seniors and adjusting to the higher level of of competition.

“Preparations for the Russian championship are a little off course. You plan to go to Saransk, and you find yourself in the hospital. Unfortunately, participation in the tournament is questionable. You are treated on time, friends,” Kolyada wrote on his Instagram page.
Orser now will be able to accompany Evgenia Medvedeva to Russian Nationals in Saransk (since Hanyu has WD from JPN Nationals): https://rsport.ria.ru/20181213/1547953094.html

Tutberidze has become "a top coach" less than 6 years ago, one year before Lipnitskaya skated in the Olympics. She has/had very few men skaters (5 total) compared to other top coaches and the amount of ladies she trains. Voronov skated as a senior and switched without injuries. Skirda switched, without injuries, and yet did not become a "star" under any other coach. Kvitelashvilli is skating in Eteri's group, and without injuries. Pitkeev had some injuries, but so are many skaters.

Aleksei Erohov switched from Klimkin to Tutberidze on his own free well because per his own comments "i was 11 and i was not even taught any triples at Klimkin's group". Erohov's issues are not just orthopedic injuries (in his own words) he also has issues with his heart (not caused by jumping). He also said he had an extended period of "growing issues" that was hard for him to handle, and he is also very stubborn (in a positive way) about learning difficult jumps. In his own words "In Tutberidze's group nobody forces anyone to work hard, it's up to you".

Not to pick on Mishin, but in his group skaters like Dobrin, Gatchinsky, all dealt with serious injuries, and left Mishin's group without any major results.

Russian-Canadians who watch Medvedeva practice recently, are rumoring that she'll have a new SP programme, lyrical music, closer to her old style ( :cheer2: )

(somewhere there are few videos of her practice, here is one of them).

I have a serious question after watching the junior pairs’ press conference.

Not only are the Russian girls talented, they are almost all beautiful. Really. And yes I know about hair and makeup but really, you can’t disguise bone structure. They are really knockouts.

Do Russian coaches weed out the homely ones in the beginning of the process? I can see them rejecting those whose body type isn’t promising, but if a good skater with an unlovely face shows up, do they point her to ice hockey or speedskating?

I really want to know. Without naming names, there have been enough not-so-attractive US lady skaters that I assume we don’t do that here.

I’m not sure if they have a selection process to pick only the beauties, but I’m honestly baffled at how all the Russian ladies are so gorgeous. Their skin is sooooooo clear; you’d think one of these girls would get a pimple once in a while! And they have such amazing hair!

Top of my list would be Radionova, Stolbova, Tarasova, Volosozhar, Zabiiako, Zagitova, Medvedeva, and Kanysheva. And there are many others 😀

Kostornaya? the most perfect face
Lozko, Fedichkina..

"You in danger, girl" GIF comes to mind when thinking of Med situation at Russian Nationals

Med should just go to Nationals and let the chips fall where they may. If she finishes low among Worlds-eligible ladies, then back to the drawing board. Same thing with Gracie in the USA, not that the reasons for their troubles are the same.

Exactly! She’s just made a big change; it might take a few years for it to pay off. Look at Tuktamysheva - she struggled for a few seasons, but now she’s looking glorious.

I’m not sure about skating but “beauty of face” most certainly is a factor in selecting girls who enter the top ballet academies in Russia. It’s also taken into account in the annual weeding process, if all else is the same...then, of course, in hiring. Just ask 1998 Vaganova Academy grad Irina Kolesnikova, a brilliant dancer who was not hired by any of the major companies after graduation because of certain facial features, joined a smaller private company (Tatchkine’s St. Petersburg Ballet), became a much-beloved Prima on International tours, especially in the UK. I admire Kolesnikova’s ability to laugh at it all now; for example, she’s given herself the Instagram handle “Irinatheuglyduckling”... https://www.instagram.com/irinatheuglyduckling/😆..
... yet now she’s a gorgeous lead in Swan Lake. But I digress.

That’s insane! People can be so vain...

Regardless how quickly or slowly Tuktamysheva’s illness started, as a skater who won a medal she would have been drug tested at GPF. We haven’t heard anything so it must have been clear. So what would be the point of taking drugs AFTER GPF if the she would the decide not to compete at Russian nationals to avoid drug testing? That doesn’t make sense.

I hadn’t even thought about drug testing! You may have hit the nail on the head @hanca . I was wondering why Tuk would pull out of Nationals almost two weeks before the event. Now it makes sense.

She did not pull out 2 weeks before the event. She only got back to Moscow on Tuesday ( left Vancouver late Monday arrived Moscow late Tuesday with the time difference), just one week before the team is due to leave for Saransk!

So what is the story with Kolyada now?

I posted it in the other thread about Russian Nationals. His coach Valentina Chebotareva was quoted by the news agency TASS confirming that he had problems with sinusitis but will come to Nationals nevertheless.

I hope he will be recovered enough and not does not put his health at further risk. Also I hope he gets the right advice from the doctors. Nationals is important and for sure there are enough people waiting for the chance to kick him out of the National team, so I guess there is a lot of pressure on him to compete. But it won't help him eventually if he competes and skates poorly because he is sick or he aggravates his illness.

Lisa Tuktamysheva obviously had no chance to recover in time for Nationals. She looked still really sick in the photo she posted today (although she wrote that she is much better already). But those people who think she feigned illness to avoid to lose at Nationals to junior skaters probably just think she used make up to look sick. :angryfire:mad:
