From Russia with love [#28]: Autumn to Winter 2017

Am I the only one who prefers Zagitova to Medvedeva? That girl has spunk and fire and Medvedeva's "acting" has never done anything for me

I like Med the best. She has it all. I love Polina's jumps and I hope she will be healthy enough to develop into a great all around skater. I have not yet warmed up to Zagitova but that doesn't mean I won't in the future.

Not I. While I dislike the acting, because she's better than that, I love Medvedeva, even if I prefer Tsurskaya.

I just don't see anything in Medvedeva apart from her incredible consistency (which truly is admirable). But other than that, she isn't wowing me with anything and I don't think she has the musicality people claim she has based on her awful panto-impressions.

I find things to like about all three of them. Don't hurt me. I don't have them on my list of favorites, and Lord knows I find their coach annoying, but I like them.
The "evil" coach is actually a very good and supportive person. All the girls love her, the atmosphere in her group is cheerful friendly and supportive. All girls are friends, on the ice and off the ice. Eteri manages to eliminate "negativity of competition" between her students, and that's a lot. All think that Eteri "tough but fair", well.. except Pitkeev and the odd-ball Lip (with all her specifics)... and 2 people vs. 15+ people speaks for itself.

Eteri can not be a bad mentor if 2 of her top students, who are fighting for the SAME medal, are best friends, insist on sharing a room when travelling, and put all fan gifts into one pile to share.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuJXhempX30

The spontaneous fan fotos of her group also show positive atmosphere...

Tsurskaya is my favorite but I prefer Zigzag to Med by a lot. There is something very authentic about her (including authentic gawky teenager) whereas to me Med (though I respect her a lot)looks overpackaged and her programs over-choreographed. I’ve also liked Alina’s Don Q from the get go. It builds to a great climax with the music and, assuming she makes it to Pyeongchang, I expect her to be a BIG crowd favorite with it.

Hurray for her. I still find her annoying. :)

The very good and supportive person gave an interview just a few months ago where she speaks quite nasty about quite a few skaters who left her. I don’t think the interview portrays a good and supportive coach.

The fact that that all her current students love her, I don’t think that’s a proof that she is a good and supportive person. From past interviews all students loved Morozov and yet we all know about his moral values.

Went to Averbukh's "Romeo and Juliet" show in St Petersburg. We may laugh on his choreo for Evgenia or other skaters but he is really good in choreographing big shows :respec:
I went to the "Carmen" this summer and it was great but his R&J is even better. Skaters, costumes, decorations, visual effects - everything was :kickass:
V/T landed a throw, did a twist and few impressive lifts (quite obvious as they have retired just recently :) ).
Totmianina/Marinin did a great job playing Romeo and Juliet. Totmianina's landing position on the throw is still to die for :swoon:
Domnina has a very unusual character to play (Plague), I even didn't recognize her at first.
Margarita Drobiazko is in perfect shape, few currently competing ice dancers must be jealous :shuffle:
All other skaters (Petrova/Tikhonov, Kostomarov, Yagudin, Shabalin, Albena/Maxim) also looked good.
Kulik skated in Moscow but we got Arthur Gachinsky, who played Paris. It was nice to see him on the ice again, especially in such a big show :)

Let’s see if this adorable friendship continues when Medvedeva starts losing to Zagitova. Lipnitskaya and Shelepen used to be BFFs too.
And you might want to add Shelepen and Voronov to the list of odd people who do not think Eteri is all that supportive of her students when the chips are down.

When the chips are down they go out with the garbage. She doesn't waste much time on them with so many possibly brilliant skaters waiting in the wings. Great that Russia has so many prospects but very sad for the rejects who often using diff. techniques could still be very successful.

Just read the news about Pogo. I'm so sorry. :(
But maybe it's for the best. Back pain is a bitch. I've suffered for years and still do, although it's much better than it used to be. All the best wishes to Anna. Get well and get back soon. :cheer2:

I'm glad that Polina learned her basic technique before going to Moscow. She has great jumping technique and she seems tall enough. Zagitova seems to have a good technique too. I really do hope these two will survive and Gubanova (I so do love her:swoon:) becomes a strong competitor. I'm still "mourning" my Yulenka. :(

“I’m currently in Europe, and our other young coaches don’t have a U.S. visa. I asked the Russian team coach to accompany her. It isn’t great, but there is no other option.”
I hope they can apply for and get multi-entry visas and that they need them.

Awwww... I was looking forward to seeing him in the KnC. Oh, well. She'll be fine.

Could be better in a way because he would inadvertently suck up a lot of media attention and make it hard for her to focus because the story will be on "how will Plushenko do as a coach?" it's something they'll need to navigate in the future. He still has rock star status. It would be like having Kwan sitting in the K&C.
