From Russia with love [#23]: Spring/Summer 2016

Stealing skaters again... :blah:
Proklova with her injuries didn't work out, so she is chasing after healthy, successful and experiened junior to bring her immediate medals next season?
I don't like those tactics so much.
That's quite the accusation
How would you know she is "stealing skaters"? Maybe Sotskova felt her current coach had taken her as far ash she could and needed a change.

After watching the subtitled documentary about Tutberidze and Medvedeva, I so much respect for her as a person and as a coach as well. She has great attention to detail, keeps it real, and doesn't mince words. Would love to work with a coach that hands-on and detail-oriented, who is less concerned with giving you constant ego-boosts and more with giving useful, blunt, up-front and to the point feedback.

Also the part where she said "You have deprived me of the lexicon..." (or something to that effect) was priceless.

Not even poor Diana can catch a break. Eugenia almost seems like a daughter to her, as well. I can see who other skaters would be put off by that. In the US, a coach would probably be avoided by other skaters/parents who would view that as a clear conflict of interest/favortism. People here expect to pay for equal treatment.

Panova had a bitch face second only to Tsareva, too bad. But I think Maria needs someone who will really work on her basics and expression.
Adelina always had strong basics and power in her skating, even as a junior, so I would guess Buyanova must be able to teach that.

You never know, Proklova still may work out if she is healthy. And if not singles, she may try pairs. Even though pairs are quite full as a discipline, they are not as full as ladies. She is quite small which would be advantage. And she still could be junior for two or three seasons, so she would have time to learn pairs.

Oh, gosh, don't mention Proklova! :(

I like Maria S a lot. I'm not sure I see Buyanova as a fit for her. I maintained a fantasy Maria could go to Rafael A. after she visited his group last year. He could work on her jumps and Ashley W could show her how to sell a program! Also, Raf's students usually have great programs, which unfortunately cannot be said of all Buyanova's skaters...
There's nothing wrong with Sotskova's jumps. All her jumps are fine and she has consistent 3-3's. What she needs is more speed and better packaging.

Also, while those dreams may be attractive, it's not everyone's thing to uproot themselves and move to a different country to train with a different coach - when the coaches in their home country are already so good and producing good skaters.

I am sorry if I missed a post with with this information, but have there been any post-Worlds interviews with Volosozhar and Trankov?

I don't think a US coach would be allowed to drag a little girl around the ice by the scruff of her neck whilst the girl is upset and resisting

Masha Sotskova according to some rumors moves to Buyanova
She already left her coach, Svetlana Panova, but there isn't any official information about her new coach

I bet Buyanova is wishing she hadn't turned down Pogo now right about now, given she won a World medal this season while Adelina failed to make the team and Proklova didn't even compete at all! But it seems like things with Tsaraeva are better now so Pogo may be better off. I wonder why Sotskova switched? I know her coach's students/rink is mostly younger girls but I read the articles with Raf and he spoke very highly of Panova. Though she did have RBF, she did a good job helping Maria keep her jumps strong during her growthspurt. People think Radionova grew a lot over the past couple years but I'm pretty sure Sotskova grew even more, going from like 154 cm to 170 cm in the span of 2 seasons! Anyways I hope it works out for her and that we finally see her on the senior GP this fall. I think she could have held her own in seniors this past season, but the Russian field is so crowded it's always hard.

They are lovely! And dare I say the outfits are on point: age appropriate, fashionable, on trend but still conservative. They are both BEAUTIFUL, I mean, I knew that already but they clean up well. Evgenia really seems to have the best competitive mindset in the sport, she and Anna seem very close and when Serafima was living in Moscow the two of them were very close as well. I think it's nice to see fierce competitors be able to have strong friendships as well. In a way it makes sense, if you're friends with the competition, you know what you're up against, you see your friend working hard and it pushes you to be at the top of your game as well. Obviously they all want to win, but if you do your best and they do as well, then you can be happy for yourself and your friends. Idk. I think it's nice.

Why would Ashley show her competitor how to sell a program?

By the way, interview with both Evgenia and Anna after WC
http://www.sovsport.ru/gazeta/article-item/895989

Fashion police: Medvedeva is wearing the same outfit she wore at the WC banquet

Aside from that, the girls are so much more normal than the presenter who was saying stuff like "Russia is taking back everything that's rightfully theirs" and "Americans don't really know how to make medals"

Thankfully, both Anna and Zhenya said this was their favourite medal.

Vasiliev's comments on the Russian team's performance at Worlds (he does not miss the opportunity to get in a dig at Trankov ):

Haha! I love Vasiliev's snark against Trankov and Mozer :D

May B&D beat the evil Mozer group!

Rafael and Vasiliev are my two favourite coaches - their interviews are the best!

I think it's more a snark against the Russia Fed that makes the decisions. Of course Trankov is going to want to skate on his terms -- Stolbova/Klimov also decided to end last season after Euros -- and of course Mozer is going to want all of her Pairs to be there. It's up to the Fed to decide whether they get it.

Maybe Mozer is the federation !!

Well, Mozer is the one who gets the bulk of the pairs funding in Russia and she's the one who made S&K withdraw last season and she's the one demanding all these privileges and extra camps for her teams. She's also a big reason why Vasiliev can't get enough ice time. So I hope this embarrassing showing of her pairs will lead to the Russian fed rethinking their pairs program.

What bugs me is that Vasiliev coached a pairs team to the OGM and world title long before Mozer did, but he doesn't get any love from his fed.

I guess with Mozer there is no risk that she'd sleep with her students :p

charming, gorgeous and sweet.
Not substance to report, it is fluff
(Anna turning 18, Zhenia taking exams for 9th grade, they sort of know each others' programs because they train at the same rink), but PR is good and Zhenia and Anna are lovely.

To the victor goes the spoils and doing this sort of fluff looks like fun. Good for them.

This would be the best. Mozer has lost it. She had it in 2014 but now its all gone and now needs to be seen realistically and maybe teams need to be removed.

She had it because she got teams that were ALREADY good. But she hasn't been able to make them improve more and this is it now.
T/M to Moskvina and S/K to Vasiliev I'd say...although the latter has got B/D already and probably wouldn't take them. Dmitriev would also be an option, but I want him to make wonders with A/R.

Those suggestions must happen as Mozer has no idea on technical element upgrades now required.
