From Russia with love [#23]: Spring/Summer 2016

Interview with Buyanova from Vaitsekhovskaya
"Sotnikova can deal with everything"
http://www.sport-express.ru/figure-skating/reviews/988698/

-Adelina already has a new SP
- She confirms that both Sotskova and Pitkeev are in her group now
- Nothing about Proklova :(

The Kovtun parts made me sad. It seems like she's an awesome coach and very patient with him. Hopefully it starts to click and make him be able to perform consistently, otherwise I see him walking away from skating all together. I know he's not everyone's cup of tea, but he is a very gifted and talented athlete. Sounds like he just needs to trust the process and put in the work.
Very excited to see Adelina next season. I think (barring injury) that it will be a great season for her.

...

I'm not a big fan of Kovtun's skating, but he's too young to walk away from the sport. I could be totally wrong here, but I wish the Russian Fed would quit pressuring these guys to be the "next Plushenko". There is no "next Plushenko". By all means, honor Plushenko for what he's achieved, but don't expect Kovtun or Kolyada or whoever to step into his skates. Let these guys be who they are and achieve what they can achieve without such unrealistic expectations.

Old injury. It's already healed, according to Kovtun himself in an instagram post. He just didn't find out about it until the medical examination that he's been undergoing the past 2 days.

Could it be the reason he had such an awful worlds/ He couldn't land anything. May be he didn't know about the injury then?

I haven't read the interview, but according to TAT, Kovtun is very lazy and doesn't train properly, which she believes is the main cause for his meltdowns.

TAT can be harsh in her appraisals just like she can be a bit over enthusiastic in her gushing. Kovtun's biggest problem is inside his head. He just freaks out when he competes. He'd be fine if all the judges just talked quietly among themselves while he skated and then just review the tapes. I think he has the ability. He just needs to acquire the competitor gene. That's the biggest difference between all the Russian men and Plushenko. Plush owned the ice or at least he made you believe he did. Kovtun doesn't even rent it when he competes.

There is nothing the federation could pressure the skaters to be that the skaters shouldn't want themselves anyway! It has looked for years that kovtun doesn't pay attention to anyone who recommends improvements in jumps or programs. If someone is really bothered with actually being the next plushenko exactly that's bad on their part. Like no one ever was pressuring plushenko to be as sucessful as Urmanov.

I am only talking about Boston
If the fracture has healed by now, then he didn't injure it during Worlds. My point was that if he was practicing fine during the days leading up to Worlds while in New Jersey then I don't think the hand was responsible for what happened during his FS.

Max was recommended a psychologist last year, he met the guy but in the end decided not to attend regular sessions. He's a grown man, his coach can't force him if he has no motivation to improve himself.

IMO he needs a choreographer who gets him interested in his programs, so he can sell those to the audience, showing his soul. Just doing quads (and missing them half the time) is not going to get it done.

Let's not talk about being interested in his programs, he's not even that interested in figure skating. He considers FS just his occupation. He said so in an interview last year.

Yes, I think he needs some hypnotherapy that would persuade him that he LOVES skating. Or some modern form of brainwashing? It's not enough to be talented (which he definitely is) if the person doesn't put enough work in. Maybe being injured and missing the whole season would help him realise how much he may miss it.

When people love the work they do, it's not a job and usually they do it very well. A job doesn't have to be just a job (although mine is ). I am sure training in FS is a grind, but some skaters are able to get past that and they do find some enjoyment in it. It is sad if he doesn't get that occasional moment of enjoyment in FS.

Well, in that interview Buyanova made it clear that he has one season to get it together:
"Next season should be decisive for both of us. In many ways. In the joint work plan as well."

So we shall see what happens.

Anastasia Gubanova, 13, won the Adv. Novice Girls gold medal at Gardena Spring Trophy earlier today - 128.91 total, 89.97 in FS to Abel Korzeniowski's 2013 Romeo & Juliet film soundtrack, landed 7 triples (3F, 3Lz+3Lo, 3F+3T, 3Lz, 2A, 3S): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmnOc9gXIFs
