IMHO, both are well within their rights to be irrational and feel hurt. Those are their emotions so they are valid. The difference is the expression of those emotions. Med was a child/very young adult when she left Eteri yet her behaviour was mature. Eteri is a grown woman but behaved like a spoiled child. Yes, Eteri has been through a tough time and maybe that excuses part of why she originally lashed out at Med, but now? Bringing Med into this latest interview is just petty and vindictive.

I think you've missed the point of the post you are quoting. The dynamics of the coach-student relationship is different, because the system is different. It is not as business-focused in many cases.

As for Medvedeva, the thing that many people find distasteful is not that she left, but how she did it.

How many stories of orphans, pyramid training programs, and 11 year old boys and girls set away to train with surrogate parents do you think American skating fans need to understand this because there is at least three decades of fluff pieces about this stuff on YouTube.

Also, Medvedeva probably would not have had a chance at the World team given how the Russian selection process works with that 27 member council of coaches.

To be fair to Tutberidze, Zhulin was badmouthing Ilynikh/Katsalapov even three years after they left him, so if that’s the Russian standard, Tutberidze still can speak badly about Medvedeva for two more seasons.

I think she already raised the bar in badmouthing. Every coach usually complains only about one student. For Zhulin it was only one couple. Tutberidze managed in one of her past interviews to badmouth about 5-6 students. It was definitely Voronov, Pitkeev, Lipnitskaya, I think also Tsurskaya and Shelepen... in fact, she named only one student who met the expectations and brought her flowers to say goodbye. Unfortunately I don’t remember who was that well behaved one. Was Tursynbaeva? Or Sakhanovich?

People watch Eteri like hawks, her every move, and use every element possible to turn against her, in Russia and! in the West. Her former pupils often act irresponsibly and unjust in their explanations as to what happened. When pushed, she explains what happened, her side.

It is anyone's right to defend one self, if threatened.

As the facts show, many of her former students, either return, or want to return, or at least now give interviews that Eteri had nothing to do, or very little to do, with their decision to leave.

Since then over dozen new students, with "name and accomplishments" left Buianova's and Panova's groups, to come to Eteri's group.

Internet works "in a swing of a second", and if she was/is so horrible, parents and students would not run to her and beg for audition...

Let me look at your list with a bit more sceptical eyes.

Shelepen needed a job. The job that was available was at the rink she used to skate. As a new coach, at this stage of her career she doesn’t need as a strong enemy as Tutberidze is, so she didn’t have much choice than doing a bit of PR and smoothing the relationship. You would do the same, as would most people.

Tarakanova (and also Sakhanovich) are using the old excuse - I couldn’t stay here, we had to move (Sakhanovich) while later moving back to Moscow... Tarakanova ‘I wanted to stop skating’ and soon she is again skating - both cases seem to me like they wanted to leave but wanted to leave on good terms so that the things are not awkward in the future. I have used similar strategy with one of my coach. I thought she was completely unreasonable, but rather than going into it I just made up that my schedule was suddenly not matching with hers and that was ‘the only’ reason that made me find another coach.

Anyway, if someone is supposed to be a professional and complains in an interview that most of her previous students couldn’t be bothered to bring her a small present or flowers, I would ask why does she think this happens. One person may be not well brought up, but if it is so many, one can’t help wondering whether there is a fault in her. Maybe the reason why they don’t bring her the flowers is that they feel so angry with her that they think she doesn’t deserve anything.

And about the badmouthing of her students, how do you explain how she spoke about Voronov, that he wanted his mother to be present at his practices? Those comments were absolutely unprofessional. But I have no doubt that you have already an excuse ready.

Sometimes, it is quite shocking to read when they say stuff about peers, current or former students/skaters. They also have their own ways of training athletes. Adelina left Buyanova without a formal goodbye and Artur Gachinski left Mishin the same way. But neither one of them went on and on whining about how they didn't get flowers, they acted like professional, mature people. I'm sure these things happen more often than we hear about. First of all, young people don't always do the right thing because they are not mature, and scared or uncomfortable. Second of all, society changes and what used to be considered formal etiquette often falls by the wayside. That's just how it is, all over the world, but some people here are...well...impossibly stuck in the past.

Artur and Mishin work together now so obviously not everyone holds such a grudge. Let's face it...Tinami will grasp at any straw to hate on Evgenia, and that's all this is really about for her. None of us know these people personally or the real dynamic that they had in their day-to-day relationships.

Don't misguide the non-Russians with twisted information. Yes, flowers and gifts for teachers are a wide-spread tradition, but normally they are bought jointly by a group (when they graduate, for example). Individual gifts are absolutely up to students themselves, some would make them, some not. If a student is on bad terms with a teacher, it wouldn't occur to him to buy gifts for that teacher.

So it’s ok for Eteri to be hurt but not Medvedeva? It’s obvious Medvedeva was very hurt by the loss at Olympics. What happen behind scenes we won’t know. It was a big enough hurt to make big changes. Why hate the skater for wanting maximum results on her terms. Very sad for the adults that hates the young skater for wanting the best for herself.

This is out of context. IIRC, what Med was told by Eteri after the Olympics, was to go off and get pregnant while Med was not at all ready to hang'em up. So if that were the case, I could totally understand while Med herself felt betrayed and stopped responding to Eteri's texts.
