Dry January & Sober, But...

So who is doing Dry January but taking drugs? I have to admit that the idea never entered my mind. Not that I participate in Dry January to start with. I drink about 6-18 a year and don't do any drugs, so I mostly just don't think about it. I'm just surprised that someone doing Dry January would still smoke weed.

I'm not entirely surprised. Alcohol adds calories. I know a few groups of people, one being body-building / obsessed men, who take drugs rather than drink alcohol. Not just in January.

IIRC, rampant drug usage within some communities was starting to hit bars' bottom lines. People would show up on G or ketamine or whatever and order two bottles of water through a whole night of partying. Which is a lot less $$$ for the bar than, say, five or six vodka sodas.

ANYWAY - I am doing dry January (and not doing drugs  ). I've been "dry" since September and have actually enjoyed it. I encourage anyone who is curious to try. I never drank much, but I realized I had never done a dry month since I was probably 22 (20+ years ago). So I tried one month, and then I keep extending it. Don't feel like you had to wait for a specific month or day, e.g., dry January or sober October. If you're curious, just pick a day and try.

I don't pick a particular day or month. I don't even do an intentional practice. I find I may not have had a drink for 2 or 3 weeks depending upon our social lives. We may or may not go out to eat.beyond fast food for weeks and i dont have any alcohol. I really don't drink without a social activity like dinner with friends.

Our recent cruise was different- drinking more than I had combined for 3 months.

I have a friend who doesn't like following a fad, so she did a dry February. Another gave it up for Lent.

I know I post about wine. But I can open a bottle of wine and it will sit on my counter for weeks before I finish it.

Doesn't it go bad?

I intend to drink every day on my cruise. Maybe twice a day. So no Dry January for me in 2025!

I am interested if there is anyone here who is willing to state publicly that they do illegal drugs and will give us some insight into those who are doing "Sober but" or "California Sober". I can understand why people wouldn't want to admit that. So maybe someone who smokes weed in a place where it's legal?

I'm not that big of a wine snob to discern a huge difference. . On the very rare occasion that the bottle is over $30, that is opened and shared with others

Occasionally it will be so long, that it gets a vinegar taste- then it goes down the drain

alcohol makes me very loud and giggly while marijuana makes me chill and relaxed. I can use a marijuana tincture and still read a book or do normal things while alcohol just makes me annoying and in need of a babysitter. I have a lot of friends who dont drink but use marijuana for the same reason. alcohol doesnt relax me at all and im too old for this frat party energy it gives me. also I am drunk with one or one and a half drinks now that I am old and pathetic.

The last time I had a drink was in 2012 after I came home from being in a nursing facility. A friend and I went to a little casino just out of the city limits where it was legal to drink. Mind you, I could use a walker pretty well, and could use both legs then.

It had been over a year since I had anything to drink because of being in the hospital and the nursing facility. My friend got me a Miller Lite to drink while I was sitting and playing a video poker machine. I didn't do too bad and won a little more than what I brought to play with.

I drank about 3/4's of that Miller Lite and had a buzz going. When I stood up, I nearly fell over my walker. So that ended my days of drinking anything. That same friend brought me a six-pack in the bottle of Coors Edge which is non-alcoholic to try about 6 months ago. I thought it was going to taste nasty, but it wasn't. It almost tasted like the Miller Lite I used to drink. So if anyone does wish to slow down on their drinking, try Coors Edge.

I tried marijuana once when I was about 26 years old. I wanted to see what the big deal was about it. All it did was make me want to eat everything in sight, and I realized I would probably gain a lot of weight if I made that a habit.

I’ll have a drink but not drugs. Pot/cannabis is legal in Canada but it smells like a skunk and not my thing even as a teenager lol.

I’ve never gotten involved with the dangerous addictive drugs nor has my extended family.
