Dick Button has passed away

One of the most influential figure skaters in the history of the sport. I admired him ever so much. His love and passion for the sport lasted a lifetime. His TV commentary greatly influenced me in becoming a figure skating fan. What an impact he has had on so many lives. I was just thinking about him at Nationals and wondering how he was doing. He is an unforgettable man. What a life well lived.

Goodbye, Uncle Dick. You made figure skating a world wide phenomena.

This has just been the most epically sad 24 hours for the entire figure skating community and fandom. I grew up with Dick Button on my TV and he's the reason I watch skating the way that I do. I learned SO much from him and his voice was so welcoming during skating coverage. I had the pleasure of meeting him at US Nats in 2014 and he could not have been nicer to me. I treasure that picture of the two of us even more after today. RIP Mr. Button and thank you for the wonderful memories. :fragile:

I am now going to go cry in a corner over this entire tragic day. I can't remember the last time I was so affected and saddened by tragedy in any of my fandoms but these two events are gonna stay with me for a while. :wuzrobbed

It’s one of the saddest days in skating history. But age 95 is not sad- what a life! Layback spins and death spirals in heaven will be more beautiful.

I’m not sad. He had a marvelous life doing what he loved, he brought the sport to so many millions of people, and he died at a ripe old age. May we all be half as accomplished on our deathbeds.

It is the end of an era, though. No one has really inherited his mantle as the voice of the sport.

Remember the story he always used to say about Irina

We found out later, but he originally thought he heard her say to him old men love to pinch my cheeks, and he always referenced it and thought it was so funny but years later, when he interviewed her again, Irina said no, I said, all men love to pinch my cheeks
