Tassilo Thierbach has passed away. Thierbach and partner Sabine Baeß made history as the first East German pair to win a gold medal at the World Championships in 1982. Baeß and Thierbach were 2-time European Champions and 2-time Olympians as well. These German language articles reflecting on his complicated legacy discuss his involvement with the STASI:

RIP! No doubt those East German piers were the toughest opponents to Soviets for years! Obviously Germany has a long pairs tradition that goes back to the beginning !

So sad to hear this news. I loved their title winning free skate from the 1982 World Championships in Copenhagen.

(Man, Dick Button really had nothing nice to say about the team. But I thought their routine was really exciting.)

I'm not sure what their absolute speed was, but they maintained it really well. That first throw was :swoon: and they attacked all of their elements without hesitation.

The first skating competition I went to was 1981 Worlds in Hartford, Ct. Thierbach and his partner were silver medalists there. Russians were first, West Germans were third, and the Carruthers finished off the podium in fifth.

RIP
I've watched that competition many times. Such a great event. Underhill and Martini were fantastic in the free skate as well.
