Chantastic....the return of Patrick

He sounds to be in a good place, and Ravi will be a steadying presence at the boards.
Makes me wish he had gone to Ravi a long time ago. But no point dwelling! Go Chiddy. 3A looking great in practice and he says he may still attempt 4S (at the OG I assume he means).

Despite the mistakes, I actually think Patrick's scores were lowballed compared to the others. IMO he should be more than 4 points ahead of skaters with lower quality spins, footwork and overall skating, and who made mistakes as well.

I also always appreciate that he goes for the camel/camel in the SP.

It makes me incredibly sad this will be Patrick's final season and the Olympics likely his final event. It doesnt matter where he places or if he is technically no longer that competitive, there is nobody who uses the blade and edges like Chan does even today, and I could watch him skate on end, no matter how he scores and places. He will be greatly missed.

Even moreso Kevin was probably lowballed. Not a fan of his skating but he arguably should have won the short, and he should have been way ahead of the others (besides Patrick) who didnt skate cleanly, while he did with his quads. That might have eased some of the nerves he obviously felt going into the LP.

Those qualities in Patrick have been sadly underappreciated by judges for a few years now. I wonder if that he was arguably a bit held up/overmarked in 2011-2013 came back to hurt him at the 2014 Games (where IMO he should have won even with his mistakes, given Hanyu's performance and then inflated PCS as his skating had not developed to its current point) and a bit thereafter.

Pretty much everyone has written Patrick off, but I wonder. He has managed to avoid most of the Olympic year hype and media attention, and as a result he is going into the Olympics without the tremendous pressure that Canada always puts on our top male skaters. That could make a big difference. He looks like he is skating well, but more importantly he looks relaxed and confident, comfortable with himself and his skating. I think being with Ravi has helped him too. He’s healthy, he’s rested, and he hasn’t been wearing himself out trying to do 5 quads in a program. This could be very interesting...

Patrick is older and likely much wiser after 2 Olympics. He may actually benefit from being completely underestimated this time round, not part of the multiple quad conversation. Going from the hunted with biggest target on his back, to just another hunter, one with stone age weapons against a nuclear arsenal, was maybe an eye opening experience, one that undermined his confidence and had him questioning his own motivation and desire for another kick at the can.

I think instead of beating his head against the wall, he just took a page out of the Jackie Chan "handbook for success," and he decided to do things his way, in his own time, so he took a different path. He listened to his aging body and used all the life lessons he learned along the way. I think he patiently waited for the competition to burn themselves out in the run up to the Olympics, he watched others struggle thru injury, politicking, or the pressure of expectation, overtraining etc., as he flew well under the conversational radar. I think he probably made his final decision to skate at the games during national's, when he felt the amazing swell of support and all the love/respect his skating could still command. Then too, the desire to help his friends and co-hunters, was also a pressing need, a serious factor where perhaps skating this time is more about teamwork and honor, raising the flag for Canada, supporting his teammates and their dreams as well as his own, than just for sake of his own glory. A noble quest that has probably helped him get out of bed and train hard, this last month, or 2.

Kurt Browning made a good point, when he said don't count him out after all "he's freaking Patrick Chan!"

Maybe taking up the cause to help Canada win another team medal (hopefully gold this time) by doing what he does best - skating beautifully, will also help his karma ( maybe even break that darn curse) and prove why his champion level skating still matter's, perhaps even more now, than ever before, and even at the individual level... I hope Chan Can. I hope he will remind everyone just how great a champion and world class skater he still is! Go Patrick!

I think Patrick is actually better off being a huge underdog. His history is he doesnt skate great while being the favorite, with the 2011 and 2012 worlds maybe being the lone exceptions. Obviously he won in 2013 but not skating great to do it. This time nobody is picking him to medal, even if he is still considered a contender for one, and absolutely nobody thinks he can win gold, vs the last Olympics when he was favored to win gold and there was all this talk of him "breaking the curse". Even in 2010 he had a lot more pressure, as he was seen as much higher up on the totem poll of contenders than he is this time, and he was on home ice too. That is probably beneficial to him if anything. He can just focus on his skating, let it all fly, and let what happens happen.

Others have more pressure. While not the favorite either, Fernandez has tons of pressure as it is his last chance of an Olympic medal he doesnt have yet. Plus as a 2 time time World Champion this quad, he is still close to the top of contenders. Hanyu obviously has a ton of pressure as a co favorite to defend his Olympic title, and what a huge legend that would make him, after not skating all season. Uno has a ton of pressure, and Chen probably has the most pressure of anyone which he didnt deal with well last year. Even Boyang despite being an underdog too, just given the nature of the Chinese government and their approach with athletes.

At this point I’m wondering will Chan even bother with the individual event?

After what happened with Nathan Chen, who is now below him, maybe he'll take heart and just go for it. Maybe.

Wow!
I actually thought Patrick should have been further ahead of Nathan, since he at least didn't have any invalid elements. I kind of wanted Bychenko to win, though.

Congrats for not horribly popping your jumps, Patrick? Congrats on bombing, but not miserably? Congrats on sucking less than almost everyone else?

Anyone else notice how 3rd in the SP at major events seems to be Patrick's default placement the last couple years (Worlds)? Though usually he skates well to get to that placement...

Wow, what happened to the Men? It was like a gloom wave. Kolyada is way back, we could be safe.
