In terms of skating skills, there's no question in my mind for the 3rd Women's spot.
Oh well, I'll join the continued fray in this thread. You like Austman's skating skills over Chartrand's, or over Chartrand's as well as over all the other Cdn ladies below the top two?
While I don't really follow Cdn ladies beyond the top two, I did watch the ladies performances at Cdn Nationals. Both Austman and Chartrand struggled, although Chartrand's difficulties appear to be emotional or something other than a lack of ability. Chartrand was just unable to get herself back to form technically. Her confidence appears to have taken a huge hit for the past several seasons.
In Austman's case, she has a very nice look on the ice, but I don't think her technical abilities surpass Chartrand's, it's just that Chartrand is not skating the way she can, sadly for her. Austman may have relatively better skating skills than many of the other ladies beyond the top two, and she clearly has a different style than Chartrand that some may find more engaging. However, it was so obvious that Austman had to work hard to stay on her feet with many of those jumps. It's just that Austman's huge desire won out and she landed enough technically to eke past the rest for the third spot.
I doubt Austman is going to fare that well among the international field with her current technical arsenal, but gaining the experience will mean a lot. Skate Canada find themselves in the exceedingly lucky position for their ladies division in having two of the best ladies skaters in the world, which will allow them the advantage of grooming a third lady at major international competitions (something that's been unheard of for Canada in decades). Gabby Daleman improving so much in recent years and coming on strong as a topflight contender, along with Kaetlyn Osmond recovering from injury and building back to top form has meant quite literally the Worlds ladies podium for Canada. We shall see what happens at the Olympics. Ladies with huge talent will be fighting with a similar grit that Austman displayed to make the Cdn team, but also with even more determination and skill equal in some aspects and arguably surpassing in other aspects to that of Daleman and Osmond.
I hope skaters in all the disciplines will perform in ways that will make it very hard for the judges at Olympics and Worlds.

Except I am not looking forward to seeing hide nor hair (make that black spots on a yellow background) of Tarasova/Morosov's bleh and

free program.
