It looks like the Crystal Challenge at Melbourne's O'Brien Icehouse is going to be an exciting competition.

We're especially looking forward to the Advanced Novice, Junior and Senior Events to be held on Saturday August 13 and Sunday August 14. Some of these athletes already have international assignments this season, and will be looking to likely get in some extra competition mileage before they head overseas.

Darian stood up on his opening 3Aq today :) -- he placed 3rd in the FS (122.49 with 7 triples) & 5th overall (182.61) -- and was just 4 points shy of the TES minimum (64 for FS) for Worlds!

Kaptich is scheduled to compete next week at the Cranberry International and I'm hoping he can get the Worlds SP minimum (34) there!

We attended the Crystal Challenge in Melbourne last weekend, and our biggest takeaway from the event was that Hana Bath is the real deal. Having only seen her on shaky livestream, I didn't quite know what to expect. But wow, she skates with speed and attack, and for a tiny skater, her jumps have tremendous lift. So much, that she reminds us of Midori Ito and Elizaveta Tuktamysheva. She even attempted a triple axel in her free skate. Shortly, she will be skating overseas at the SEA Trophy in the Advanced Novice Women's division. So, I don't know if she is old enough to be sent to Junior Worlds (even though she skated in the junior event in Melbourne).

Since Bath is not listed for the JGP this fall, she must be too young for ISU Junior events this season:

Unfortunately it appears that Ryan Dodds and USA's Winter Deardorff (they debuted at Hollins Trophy in June) are no longer skating together - Ryan has listed his profile on IPS as of August 14: http://icepartnersearch.com/showbio.php?i=7223
 
Vlada Visiliev had a good FS at SEA Open today. She achieved the minimum TES for 4 Continents. She missed the one for SP yesterday but it looks achievable.
Her next Senior assignments per ISA calendar are in mid to late October: Budapest Trophy or Tayside Trophy (they are in the same week. So she will have to choose one of the two) and Trophée de Nice.
 
Hana Bath won the Adv. Novice Girls silver medal in her international debut at the SEA Open Trophy in Singapore. She was 1st in the SP (3Lz+2T, 2A, 3Lo) and went for 3A (called <) in her FS (6.40 base value -1.49 GOE = 4.91 points) and also landed 3Lz+3T -- there's no second half jump bonus in Novice. The fall on her opening 2A+1Eu+3S and doubled toe loop at the end cost her the gold here but I'm looking forward to seeing how she develops!
 
For those of you aware of the plight of Canterbury Olympic Ice Rink in Sydney, here's an article from The Sydney Morning Herald - as it mentions past Olympians who trained there I think it counts as Australian skating news! It is very disappointing at a time when currently learn to skate programs are booming and the sport is growing. Two rinks lost in Sydney will have a big impact to the sport. Plus we still don't have one in Tasmania and there is nothing happening at this point in time here.
 
Yes, indeed. Canterbury had a waiting list to get into skate school and had added extra sessions, so it's not like there aren't people wanting to skate.

I've been following the situation in Tassie as well.

How awful for him.

Now we understand why the pair withdrew from this weekend's NSW Championships.

Here's hoping Harley recovers in time to skate at the NHK Trophy in November.

I'm with @Karen-W on this one: I'd be surprised if we saw them at Australian Nationals. A regular break would likely be eight weeks at least - and it is almost exactly eight weeks til Nationals now. But he's had to have surgery for a bad break, which elongates the time.

I doubt we see them prior to perhaps a B in January, if not 4CC.

As long as he takes the time to heal properly. It is always a case of pay me now or pay me later.
 
Something worth recognising in Australian skating is for the first time at a national competition in Australia there are competitors from the Northern Territory. They are competing at Wintersun.

Considering the rink has been running for only a few years, this is a major achievement that they have got skaters to this place.
 
I stayed up late to watch the Pairs and I have to say I really like Hektor and Anastasia's new SP! Jonathan did a good job of choreographing it, and they had a good first outing with it too. Though the camerawork was dire - why on earth would you film that gorgeous long lunge/slide from behind?
 
Glad Hektor and Anastasia are living up to their early promise. Will try and find and watch their programs over the weekend.

Signed! Even though I'm not a skater. :)

Unfortunately while Hektor and Anastasia's SP video went up late last night, it was gone by the time I woke up this morning - probably a copyright strike. You'll be able to find them on the full Pairs SP video though. They skated first in Group 3, just after the ice resurfacing.

Sorry you weren't able to see it.

We loved the music they used. So avant-garde and choreographically challenging, too. It was a great skate.
 
Wow! :eek: they don’t look like a junior team at all… (I know they skate senior too). They looked good last season but their quality seems to have improved even more.

Will they be sent to 4CC?

Don't see any reason why they won't be - they were supposed to have gone last season (and to Sr Worlds too) but I think one of them had a minor injury that kept them from 4CCs Tallinn edition. Visa issues getting into France from Russia kept them from Montpellier, otherwise Australia would easily have had 2 spots for Worlds this year.
