Ashley Wagner Cheer Thread #3: The Subject of Tonight's Lecture...

Interesting to hear Ashley talk about returning to MR. I agree the music of LLL lacks depth. MR IS Ashley, but how to get it fresh again?

After seeing Osmond so assured last night Ashley is definitely going to have to add something to claw her way onto the podium :revenge: A real knockout punch.

Like not UR any jumps for one thing but my guess is that may be a reason she chose a familiar program that was successful in the past - she can work on moves and jumps more - polish or add details and get those jumps fully rotated for an entire FS.

I love her but come on, she competed fewer than usual last year (no GPF), but her jumps and spins still sucked.

Sept. 20th article about how and why she switched back to Moulin Rouge: http://olympics.nbcsports.com/2017/09/20/ashley-wagner-moulin-rouge-la-la-land-free-skate/

The "small, local event" to which Ashley referred in the above article was the Southern California Interclub Association Invitational Series Final club competition in Paramount, CA this past weekend, where she placed 1st overall (200.92). She was 2nd in the SP (67.45) to Karen Chen and 1st in the FS (133.47 = 64.94 TES/68.53 PCS) and was credited with landing 6 triples cleanly (3Lz got an ! edge warning); first spin was called level 3 and she received level 4s on her other 2 spins and footwork.

OK - I'll get off my high horse (pun intended). I just watched Ashley's skate again. I love it. I think she made a good decision. I do hope she gets a new dress, though :)

An upbeat Ashley spoke to Ted Flett (Golden Skate) after she competed at Skate Canada in Regina and won the bronze medal (23 mins.): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxI7dZ7m1sk
She talks about this season's programs, costume changes to come, why she struggled last season, her respect for Karen, Mirai and Gracie, pacing herself this season, her relationship with coach Rafael, her desire to win Nationals, etc.

Ashley played host to some of the events during the 100 Days to the Olympics event happening in NYC. You can find some videos on the NBC Olympic FB page. Direct Link: https://www.facebook.com/nbcolympics/videos/10156979118620329/

There's a cute video of Ashley commentating on a relay race between Gus Kentworthy, Hillary Knight, and the Shibs and Ashley was actively rooting for the Shibs to win. Alas Maia came in third and Alex fourth.

I just watched the interview. I have renewed confidence in Ashley (whew!)

An interesting point from the GS interview is that Ashley only got the refreshed MR choreo from Shae-Lynne a couple of weeks ago and admits she wasn’t successful at including all of it in her SC FS. We saw a few new touches already, but I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of the updated choreo at SA, by which point she will have had more time to train with it. Hopefully, it’ll help further differentiate MR 3.0 from its predecessors.

It seems the biggest problem right now is having had no time to work out the switch back to MR, and she lost momentum at the end of this past season due to a broken relationship.

Quite Honestly, Ash always seems to have issues at the beginning of the season w/ subpar performances. As one example, remember the debut of MR v. 1.0 at JO in 2014? :scream: and I don't think it was much better at the next JO in 2015, but I hope I'm not misremembering.

I think she won silver at SC one year behind Pogorilaya scoring a 122 in the LP w/ MR. Sound familiar?

I have no idea how she’s going to top the Marissa Castelli dress for HHCC. All I know is that the SC SP dress was no good at all :slinkaway

She said in that Golden Skate interview that it was modeled after Lacey Schwimmer's dress when she did a Samba on SYTYCD. https://youtu.be/x1Kwwfg-lgE?t=34s
But that it didn't show up how Ashley wanted it to under the competition lights, like it did on the stage. So she's back to the drawing board.

She should not mess with the Marissa Castello dress. Huge mistake

That’s right. I remember her talking about that. Hopefully she’ll come up with something that looks a lot better under competition lights.

I’m starting to believe all non-Castelli dresses really are cursed for HHCC

My fantasy LP layout this year for Ash -

2A
3Z-2T ('tano or Rippon toe)
2A
-----
3L-1L-3S
3F-3T
3F
3Z

Well, to justify my insanity, she did almost have a 3F-3T at 2016 WTT in the 2d half, even on tired, sore legs, and might get a good edge if she does the 3Z early.

I actually kind of like this layout except I’m not sure Ashley can pull of 2 backloaded 3-3 jumping passes in a row. She seems like she might need to divide up her most difficult jumping passes with at least one easier element in between. Also I would change the last 3Z to a 3L because it’s a stronger jump for her and if she’s just done 2 backloaded 3-3s then asking to end with a 3Z might be too much.

But this definitely is a fantasy because I don’t think there’s any chance she’s changing her layout.

My fantasy for Ashley is her exact FS layout she has right now, and really drilling her conditioning, skating skills, transitions, spins, and jump technique so everything is rotated and lutz is no more than !.

She needs to get back to her 2016 form and if so she'll do great. She's become a great competitor but her technique (and definitely execution) is holding her back just a bit right now.

Your fantasy has the best chance of actually happening. I agree, if she perfects her current layout that will be more than enough to accomplish her goals. She doesn’t need to change anything, just improve the quality of what she’s already trying to do.

Well....my fantasy layout would be to bring back the big spread eagle from R&J into a 3l for her opening pass.

She did a shorter spread eagle into 3l in R&J, so it's not a stretch.

Then, where she is currently doing her solo 3l in MR, she can do a 2a followed by split falling leaf (also from R&J, hitting the split falling leaf at the "fly" in someday I'll fly away, then go right into her step sequence.

Yes, this would be lower base value by 0.18, but it would add two significant and musical transitions. If the scoring system works, her overall score would be higher because both GOE and PCS should go up.

ETA: also, upgrading 2a2t to 2a2l would earn an extra .5, no? In addition, it would be safe in case she has to double the 3t on the 3f3t and then needs to add a 2toe to the 3l later. Unlikely, as if she misses her 1/2loop-3sal after what would now be the 2nd 3loop, there's not much she could do...hmmm...

Still, I would like to see more skaters go for 2a2l for uniqueness's sake.
