I just wish that she had been able to capitalize on her 2016 World Silver Medal and continued with the same momentum in 2017 and Pyeongchang. I think her 2017 programs were inferior to her 2016 programs which didn’t help but she seemed to be out of fight by 2017 Worlds
Her programs in 2017 had great potential but lacked competitive content. She will admit that. She said she had a hard time finding the motivation after the high of 2016. She also had a rough patch in her personal life which I think really derailed her. She has been open about ensuring she had a life outside of skating to keep her balanced. The danger with that, even though it’s absolutely the healthy way to be, is that you open yourself up to more distractions. I think her breakup with Eddy really messed with any momentum in the later part of the season.

I am a litte confused, @aml78 ....what has Wagner been doing outside of skating...outside of commitments to sponsors? IIRC she had attended class at Saddleback Community College when she first moved to LA, but that effort ended fairly quickly. Maybe she will consider going to back to college?

Re: move to Boston....Wagner and Marissa Castelli have been good friends for years...and not sure where Ashely's brother Austin is living these days...so, maybe moving back to the east coast is driven by friends and family ;-)

She has stated she’s made sure to surround herself with friends outside of skating to ground her.

It was mentioned in U.S. ladies thread that Ashley posted an Instagram story about being in a serious state of depression and that she's getting professional help. I don't see any specific reference to the depth of her depression in any of her Instagram posts.

The below so far are the closest I've found to any up and down mood swing comments, but she's handling it beautifully at least from what she's posting on IG. And it's all inspirational. As usual, I find Ashley to be a role model for managing life's hard knocks:

Here is an NBC Sports article on Ashley Wagner...

https://olympics.nbcsports.com/2018/10/11/ashley-wagner-depression-figure-skating/

Ashley Wagner details ‘severe depression’ after nationals

Ashley Wagner went into “a very severe depression” and received professional help after finishing fourth at January’s U.S. Figure Skating Championships and missing the PyeongChang Olympic team.

“I could barely get out of bed. I could barely function,” Wagner said on her Instagram Story on World Mental Health Day on Wednesday.

^^ Okay, thanks so much for the link @ANL. :)

Here is Ash at her first senior nationals in 2008, the year young Mirai won but was too young to attend Worlds...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRv4bAWMxhI

Ashley was so strong and confident. She possessed that spirit, energy and optimism of youth where you just go out and blast through your performance without thinking too hard. I wonder where the technique issues show in this performance? I suppose the weaknesses in her technique began to make it more difficult for her as the competition pressure grew. But she refused to give up, coming back strong in 2010 - 2011 with John Nicks' guidance, and then later relearning everything under Raf's tutelage.

^^^ I remember vividly those Nationals.. I went on a ski trip to Park City that weekend.. I didnt do any apres-ski so i could go back to the room and watch Nationals....

Ashley had a good 3/3 (and a lutz/loop of all things) I remember and it was my first time seeing her. Then after that the 3/3 seemed to disappear for a few seasons.

She had an Angela Nikodinov-like layback... and NOTHING makes ANL happier!

I don’t think it is “first” anyone. Sport especially at the elite level is extremely difficult both physically and mentally. This has been going on for decades. What is really good news is that we are starting to hear about it. Athletes are feeling more comfortable discussing mental health. Programs like Bells Let’s Talk are starting to help remove the stigma and that is a good thing.

Just scanning careers of leading ladies. Some were heralded and succeeded but were done in 4 years. Ash has been at it for 11 years. Taking multiple international medals in most. There just aren't that many - particularly during IJS. Mao, Kwan of course, Kostner. Just the wear and tear alone.

Anyway I greatly admire her determination and choice of material. Could pull off Pink Floyd and Caffe Beluga. Moulin Rouge is iconic - like Kwan Salome. A tigress!!

No one will be around for 40 years in any job for any reason. Those things just won't happen anymore, unless your name is Joe Buck.

I have really missed Ashley this season. And I was never even her biggest fan. But no one of her skill level or higher puts as much attention to detail into their choreography as she did and I really miss that.

How nice would it have been if it were Ashley AND Adam commentating together. But just Ashley is also good. :p

I think Johnny does a good job but Tara adds nothing except giggling and talking about her skating career.
It's to be expected! She was so young when she exploded onto the scene and swiped Michelle's thunder and Olympic GOLD! All she heard was how great she was and actually had a BIO penned into a book at 16! Did she ever really grow up? When I saw a pic of her with a man, I was wondering if it was a case of child molestation! Being a child is all I can see her as and maybe in her head she still hasn't grown up! :COP: :duh: :sarah1: :sasha1:

Re-posting @Barbara Manatee's comment from GSD:
All the other commentators have gone to the NBC center in Connecticut, and I assume Ashley will too. She does have to be in the same room with Andrea Joyce, after all. And they do watch and comment live even if the show isn't broadcast until later.

I'm looking forward to hearing what Ashley has to say. NBC is building up a nice rotation of former skaters, and I've enjoyed getting the different perspectives every competition.

Is this an online feed or a US TV feed? I would love to be able to hear her takes on her ex-competitors.

Yes, think Ashley's commentary will only be broadcast on the Olympic Channel next week. Tanith, Tara, and Johnny will do the commentary on the NBC Mens/Ladies broadcast on Sunday.

Charlie White was on the Olympic Channel for Helsinki and Ryan Bradley for Skate Canada Int'l.

ETA that Ashley mentioned in her latest IG stories that she is preparing to commentate on men, ladies & pairs this weekend.
