Adam Rippon is one of TIME’s 💯 Most Influential

Both Sylvia and I commented in the Adam Rippon Good News thread. I agree it deserves its own thread! :)

How cool that the rest of the world has discovered what the skating community has known for a long time. But I must say the rest of the world appears to recognize and appreciate Adam's wonderful qualities a great deal more than some in fs.

Congrats to Adam! Keep shining and living your truth! And please keep skating in shows, exhibitions and hopefully in the pro comps that still exist. :encore:

I did. Still confused.

A good amount of people (in the U.S.) liked him beyond his skating, they didn’t care if he didn’t have a legitimate quad or if his skating skills weren’t that of a Patrick Chan, they fell for Adam as a person, not a skater.

While I agree with your post, I also generally love the phrase "reading what Cher wrote."

From now on, every time someone asks me to do something I don't want to do or tries to get me to be more productive at work, etc., etc., I'll just say, "I'll get to that as soon as I'm done reading what Cher wrote."

You definitely need to follow @cherdoingthings on twitter.

I live in the US and was very aware of his publicity. Still confused about this. But my Mom does know his name (that’s it) so that’s something...

He has made more and more men and boys decide to become perscribed to an "alternative life-style!" He has taken away from the masculinity Ross Minor and Grant Hockstine and Tim Dolesny bring to our sport and my wife and I think it is awful!

You really are trying hard to become the new Esta or something, gotta give you that, and Esta ( :glamor: ) hasn't been around for quite some time, so maybe we need that?

Influential how?
He is one of the leading Christian athletes in America. Willing to teach Vice President pence and others on how to be Christians

“Mike Pence to say he’s a devout Christian man is completely contradictory. If he’s okay with what’s being said about people and Americans and foreigners and about different countries that are being called ‘shitholes,' I think he should really go to church."

He is a major theological figure

How DARE Adam, the person whom has brought "alternative life-styles" to skating after it has rightly been held away from the pubic aspect of the sport for year's! Adam should "man up" and stick to what he can do well witch is sing, dance, and shut the front door.

Religion and politics have no place on this sport and I am in dis-belief that you can write the "S" word on this web sight and not get band.

My wife has been crying for minutes after reading the profanity. We are considering hiring a lawyer.

I think this essay written by Richard Lawson, a columnist/film critic for Vanity Fair, encapsulates Adam's "influence" on him personally after watching him skate in the team event at the Olympics: The Bittersweet Beauty of Adam Rippon
Excerpt:
I felt this as a 34-year-old, and then realized how much more acutely the Adam Rippon of it all must sweetly sting for a wide-eyed kid. The effusive reaction to Rippon shows how very important representation can be, just as Black Panther will when it arrives in movie theaters this week. It matters to a child—and to an adult—to, yes, see some reflection of themselves. But also to have the faraway heroes, the almost impossible ideals. Maybe those unreachable gods somehow help clarify things here on Earth.
If I, at eight, or 10, or 14 (oh god, 14), had seen Adam Rippon in all his swanning, proud splendor, and everyone applauding him for it, it would have destroyed me—but also remade me. It would have said something to me that I rarely ever heard said. How much time young queer people spend yearning for that kind of connection, forever sifting through culture to find the gay stuff. When you find it, it can speak to you in almost holy tones. On Sunday night, there was gay stuff, and swishy gay stuff to boot, right there on national TV, for anyone who wanted it: powerful and accomplished and beautiful.
ETA: His essay was widely shared on social media and Lawson was interviewed on NPR's All Things Considered about it afterwards: https://www.npr.org/2018/02/15/586172018/the-bittersweet-beauty-of-u-s-figure-skater-adam-rippon

Plus he merges flamboyant homosexuality with a strident evangelical Christianity. Teaching Christian values and self identification of homosexuality.
