24 Japan Nationals Women FP PBP

Mao Shimada - 3a fine; down on the 4t - story of her season so far. Comes back with two nice 3+3 in a row. Everything else really is just simple and like clockwork for her. Big smile after her last jumping pass. Well, Kaori's going to need to be clean to beat this, IMO.

ETA - 143.42 FS; 219.00 overall - clearly into 1st, lol.

Mone Chiba - gets the combo fine and then falls on her next jump. Then my stream to the TV glitched and I had to refresh so I missed her next jumping passes but TES is green, so I presume all is well. Bit tight on the landings of her jumps in the 2nd half. Nerviest FS I've seen from her all season. She may wind up behind Rino when it's all said and done, but she's still going to be named to the Worlds team by virtue of her GPF bronze and having the 2nd highest SB of the Japanese sr women.

ETA - 130.97 FS; 205.69 overall - so her SP lead was enough to keep her ahead of Rino - and she's also booked a return ticket to Worlds!
Do you mean GPF silver?

Kaori Sakamoto - clean through her first three jumping passes. Maybe the secret to this program is skating it in Japan - she was good at NHK in the FS, lol. Turnout between jumps on her first combo of the 2nd half, only got a 2t off as a result. Well, the program still isn't a natural fit for her, but there were some nice moments where she was really selling it, especially in the first half. TES is about 6 points below Mao, but there's no way she's not winning today, lol.

ETA - 149.76 FS; 228.68 overall - lolololol - that was not a 149+ performance, but okay, judges.

Currently glued to the screen showing Rion Sumiyoshi, the last skater in Group 3.
I expect some teasers, so it may be a while before Yuna Aoki is shown.
Be back soon.
It is sad to see Yuna Aoki retire. Adios Nonino gave me goosebumps at the NHK.
Her career was so truncated by injuries..

4th Group warm up starting.
Just saw the final result. Aoki retirement saves Mana Kawabe from having no funding, since it applies only down to 12th finisher.

Yuna Aoki just announced that she will retire from amateur skating.🥲

I know the Japanese field is incredibly deep, but this still seems strange a year before the Olympics, from a skater who medalled on the GP. With 3Lz+3Lo and 2A+1eu+3F, she has the technical chops and nice presentation, too. Too bad.

Does Japan use a multi-year selection process that would give her no chance? I don't think any of the age-ineligible wunderkinds will be age eligible next year, right? Or is there an outside reason - injury? University?

3 latter half jumps were all under review, 2 were tight landing in real time.
Shizuka also commented that rotation was uncertain for few jumps today uncharacteristically.

Triple triple was not executed and Kaori apologises for that
Nationals are so special that it is so difficult to maintain concentration
Intending to improve her performance through better training regimen.

In normal realtime broadcast, it is easy to create rhythmic postings since the interval between skaters are even within the group. During this broadcast, there was no such tempo, sometimes long wait sometimes a teaser, sometimes nothing without rhyme or reason.
It is really difficult and result is lost Mone Chiba post which I decided to redo.

Japan used multi-year process for Torino 2006 Olympics and almost managed to keep the eventual Gold medalist from competing there. That year the top scorer was Miki Ando, Fumie 2nd and Shizuka Arakawa barely third. This was due to 04-05 Season being considered along with 05-06 season. Since this near debacle, multi-year process was firmly abandoned.
Yuna Aoki situation is a sad one which requires this tired brain of mine to reflect and assess the situation surrounding our favorite sport of Figure Skating in Japan. Please allow me some time to respond to you, since I do not know particular situation regarding Ms. Aoki.

(Edited to correct counting error)
The triple Axel count for this Nationals:
SP: Mao Shimada (Ami Nakai went for it but mistimed it as 2A<<, so not counted)
FP: Ami Nakai (2), Mayuko Oka, Rinka Watanabe (nailed it), Hana Yoshida, Mao Shimada
Total of seven 3A attempts is a tied nationals record! Congratulations!
Five attempts were made by Juniors. It is hoped seniors who used to jump 3A, such as Wakaba and Mana, re-incorporate it in their programs. It is rumored that they are beginning to practice them.
Quicker way to increase this number is to entice 3A jumpers to skate for Japan. With names like Amber or von Felten, you must have grandma perhaps from Okinawa, would you like Japanese passport?
