2024 Athletics Thread - Road to Paris

Euros starts tomorrow in Rome. Kind of a weird schedule in that it starts on a Friday and ends on a Wednesday.

That’s probably a good idea. I’m ?? but I’m rooting for Bol to beat McLaughlin in the 400m hurdles in Paris. I understand that championships are the “big show” but I’m not a fan of Sydney only competing twice a year. The constant withdrawals from Diamond Leagues and WD from Worlds in 2023 wasn’t a good look, IMHO.
Has McLaughlin competed at all this year and what events is she doing in Paris?

I know that Sydney done at least two competitions so far - an insanely good 22.07 200m and then a 400mH where she got the world lead.

I think McLaughlin-Levrone is competing at the NYC Grand Prix this weekend.

The ?? that I’m the most ? about right now is Athing Mu. I don’t think she’s competed yet and she keeps WDs due to “tweaks” in her (I think) hamstring. The Olympic Trials are later this month. Athing and Sydney have the same coach (Bobby Kersee).

Sydney is doing the 200m now? Is she giving up the 400m if she hadn't gotten injured last year she had a chance to win the gold at the World championships. So it sounds like she won't try for double in the 400h and 400m in Paris.

I think she competed the 200m for other reasons. Many track athletes compete in other events that aren’t their “main event” to gauge certain elements (speed, endurance, etc.). It’s not uncommon for a 5K/10K runner to compete in some 800m or 1500m races, for example.

I’m pretty sure Sydney is doing her main event (400m hurdles) at Olympic trials. She will be in ??’s 4x400m relay pool. The big question is will Sydney also try to make the 400m team as well.

Feeling nervous about ?? being medal contenders for the women’s 4x400. Never have Ireland won more than three medals at Euros. :drama:

Well this is going to be interesting…

Perhaps for the best to get to the prime sport first rather than sit through a week of filler.
Because gymnastics and swimming are only filler? At the Olympics?

I guess it's nice of you to toke up this week instead of Sha'Carri, ;).

Well, they need to have two sports to substitute for one so…. :shuffle:

Besides the fact that athletics is the most diverse sport in the Games.

?‍♀️ - the way NBC has always presented and marketed it is there are four "marquee" sports - gymnastics, swimming, diving, and athletics. Week 1 we get two of them, Week 2 we get the other two. Plus, in Week 2 we get all the finals of the team sports.

As far as diversity goes... Gymnastics seems pretty diverse to me these days.

Also, US Track & Field (yes, I know it's called Athletics on the world level but the US fed is still USTAF) Trials get under way today in Eugene, Oregon!

It's a warm day for our neck of the woods - supposed to hit 88F today (it's already 87F in my neck of the woods about 90 miles north of there) and around the same for the high tomorrow, but then it's expected to cool off a bit and drop to around 71-72 by next Thursday, then warm up to the low 80s for next weekend. It's absolutely glorious outside though, with the sun shining, blue skies and only a few fluffy clouds. Perfect summertime Oregon weather for Trials!
