2023-2024 Rhythm dance

This is one of my personal favorite songs from the 1980s, and I think it has an 80s, but yet timeless, sensibility to it:

I feel completely disconnected with this theme and might be skipping ID as an entire discipline. A …
Me too! I’m really hoping for a dance team to stretch the boundaries with a ballet from the 1980s…such as the Phillip Glass works cited above. C’mon, Hawayek/Baker or Green/Parsons, who’ve gone the New Age route before! 🙏

Not gonna happen. Best you can expect/hope for is FDs in that vein. They're all smart enough to know that is NOT what the IDTC wants from the RDs this year.

Remember when the ISU had that music of the 20s, 30s, and 40s theme for the original dance back during the 2008-09 season, and most of us didn't quite like the dances. Despite the tepid responses, the ISU wanted to do the music from 50s, 60s, and 70s for 2010-11 but the OD changed to the SD so that got strapped. At least they are sticking with one decade this time, and we have a pattern dance now. That's a step in the right direction.

Also, I remember Domnina/Shabalin's 2008-09 OD not being what most people expected, but they won the OD anyway, so there was that. So why not do Phillip Glass or whatever doesn't quite fit with what most people who do 80's theme parties think about.

Another thought, there's great hip hop in the 1980s but since there is already an existing hip hop rhythm, I doubt most teams will go for 80s hip hop, so that's one genre that probably won't be represented. It'll mostly be 80s-style pop and new wave, I bet. And neon, leg warmers, headbands...wait, I just described Papadakis/Cizeron's "Fame" RD... or Javier Fernandez's "Super Javi" exhibition that he did for what felt like ten years.

I want to cry

None of this applies to the Free Dance.
Yeah, but at least for me, there's no point in watching only half the competition. I might give it a couple of shots by the time the season rolls by, but with work and all I might just cut my losses if I just plain can't force myself to like the theme.

Hey, I hear a rocker foxtrot here! Lots of good twizzles in the offing: 😂

I'm sorry you won't be partaking this coming season. With that established, I guess we can now allow this thread to be enjoyed by people who will watch ice dance this coming season and don't hate this theme too much... or those who actually like it.

I was not happy at all with the street dance theme or whatever it was two seasons ago, because I couldn't relate to the music, but I ended up having a lot of fun watching it. There was a lot more variety with that though than narrowing it down to one decade so we'll see.

Well if it's not just the usual 80s pop music type stuff, that really would be interesting. It is possible. The thread is filled with opinions not necessarily what will actually be chosen

Um well looking at the program thread so far we have:

Ghostbusters soundtrack
"Never Tear Us Apart" by INXS/"The Wild Boys" by Duran Duran
Music of Prince
Michael Jackson Thriller
Bon Jovi

The trend is not real avant garde but it can't be much less exciting than "latin dance."

I've complained a lot but mostly because I have a grudge against 80s nostalgia. Or maybe just against the 80s. :shuffle:

I'm still totally excited to see all the teams I like, even if Lagouge and Caffa skate to Living on a Prayer :yikes:

I’ll be online just to drive you nuts! 🤪
Barf emojis coming! 🤮

Well okay  Look at it this way. Say this season were Street Dance. During the Olympics, we got some out of the box stuff like Muramoto/Takahashi doing the Soranbushi with all those references to Japanese dance and folk culture. And we had Papadakis/Cizeron borrowing from gay club culture. Or Zahorski/Guerrero picking Punjabi rap (lol). Now remove the expectations of the Olympics and the "conformist" trend some get into for it, I expect a lot more creativity that way if it were the theme of this season, or the next.

I'd be fine with 1980s during the Olympics. The FDs would all be "serious bizness and Olympic moment" types, so the cheese would have been in good contrast.

Anyway, peace out, yo! Or whatever the mantra was for 1980s was. "Don't eat cocaine cookies or we will bomb you as we passive aggressively debate you, you nasty communists"? Maybe.

I guess we all passive aggressively debate each other…
1980s: drug culture, not necessarily from the left though. David Bowie went through a seemingly far right phase at one time
War on drugs culture, which in real life meant a black policeman coming to my elementary school and letting everybody know stats about substance abuse in the DARE program- leading to my lifelong near total abstinence from alcohol (we were shown graphics of how it caused dementia like brain damage).

Madonna, Just Like a Prayer - it came out when I was in 2nd grade and I liked it while having no idea it was about sex.

That's very nice. But barely counts as 80s. ;)

How about Jack & Diane. Nothing more uplifting than

"Oh yeah, life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin' is gone"

Essence of the 80s for me...
Small Town is my favorite. Plus Rain on the Scarecrow, one of the most powerful message songs from that time.

It's just been announced that Tina Turner has passed away. She has some amazing songs from the 80s that could be used.
If anyone does "The Best" this year, can we please get it as a Schitt's Creek tribute, incorporating the original Tina version (preferably with David's outfit as inspiration), as well as Noah Reid's arrangement?
Was Beyond Thunderdome in the 80s or 90s? I can't remember.

If 80s, an Aunt Entity & Max Rockatansky cosplay tribute to We Don't Need Another Hero and other music from the soundtrack would be excellent.

Shame the Nutbush is a 70s song. An Australian team could have used it if it was 80s. Because the Nutbush is our national dance.

I don’t think most teams are creating programs with the intention of being boring and mediocre.
I mean their real goal is to max goes and levels so this is pretty much what I expected
